Shiwei (Pyrrosiae Folium) grows mostly in shady cliffs and dangerous crevices. Its leaves are nearly one chi long, over one cun wide, soft and tough like leather, with yellow hairs on the back, hence named Shiwei. (Benhu)
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, slightly cold in qi. It treats labor-heat and pathogenic qi, strangury with inability to urinate. (Shennong Bencao Jing) It stops irritability, directs rebellious qi downward, unblocks fullness of the Bladder, tonifies the five labors, and calms the five Zang organs.
[Discussion] Shiwei grows beside stones and in shady cliffs and dangerous crevices, obtaining the yin qi most purely. It seems to have an immediate connection with Kidney qi, using tonification as a means for unblocking. Thus, it governs all types of strangury (Lin syndrome).
[Preparation] Brush off the yellow hairs to avoid irritating the lungs and causing coughing. The stems should also be removed. Use after slight roasting.
It has various names such as Di Zhen Xue, Jian Chou Cao, Xue Jie, and Xue Feng Cao. It spreads along the ground, thin and weak, creeping and spreading. The stems are red, exuding juice when broken, and the leaves are greenish-purple. It flourishes in summer, blooms red flowers in the sixth lunar month, and bears small fruits. The seedlings and seeds are used. Additionally, Luan Shi (Trachelospermi Caulis et Folium) is also called Di Jin; it belongs to the vine category but is a different substance sharing the same name. (Yuxi)
The flavor is bitter and neutral. It treats Heart qi. ("Neutral" implies acridity; Fire receiving Metal qi can reside in Water and transform into Blood.) It promotes the flow of blood vessels and can also treat Qi disorders.
Prescription: For uterine bleeding (Xue Beng), steam tender Ca Xue Jie, pickle with salt, oil, ginger, and eat. Take with one or two cups of wine to stop bleeding. Or dry it in the shade, grind into powder, and take one or two qian mixed with ginger wine to stop bleeding immediately. For hematuria (Xue Lin), use Xue Feng Cao, rub with well water, and drink. Three doses will cure it.
[Discussion] Di Jin spreads with red stems and greener purple leaves. Observing its flourishing in summer, blooming red flowers in the sixth month, bearing small fruits, and having a bitter taste, it seems to derive from the transformation of Fire.
In the fifth and sixth lunar months, it suddenly appears on wet soil and rotting wood. It is purplish-brown, hollow and floating; when flicked, dust comes out. Large specimens may be as big as a dou, weighing no more than one qian. Harvest in autumn.
Acrid in taste, neutral in nature. Its substance is light and void; it is a herb for the Upper Jiao Lung Meridian. It clears the Lungs, disperses blood heat, and resolves toxicity. It treats epidemic severe headache and throat obstruction (Hou Bi) with sore throat. (Remove the membrane. Ma Bo alone, ground into powder... spitting saliva and blood...)
[Discussion] Ma Bo originates from the qi of putrefaction. When Fire and Earth are at their peak in the fifth and sixth lunar months, the qi of generation and transformation of all things is at its extreme. At this time, the qi of putrefaction also takes advantage of this momentum...
[Preparation] Spread raw cloth open, rub the Ma Bo on it, and catch the powder in a plate below. Use the powder.
