Lei Fu (Thunder Axe) and Lei Xi (Thunder Wedge) are both formed by lightning striking objects. They are transformed from the essence and qi of thunder. These substances grow in the soil, without stems or leaves, and can kill parasites and expel pathogenic factors, similar to Lei Wan (Polyporus Umbellatus). It is結 (condensed) from the residual qi of bamboo, hence also known as Zhu Ling (Bamboo Poria). (Li Shizhen) It is as large as a chestnut, rounder than Zhu Ling, with black skin and white flesh, very solid. (Ibid.) The red variety is lethal, while the white one is effective. (Tao Hongjing)
The flavor is sweet, slightly bitter; the nature is slightly cold, with slight toxicity. It primarily clears stomach heat, removes heat accumulation in the skin, expels wind and toxins, resolves gu poison, kills parasites, and treats epilepsy and manic running. It benefits men but is unfavorable for women. (Here "unfavorable" does not mean lack of benefit, but rather that it disperses and promotes the yuan qi of men, but does not disperse and promote the zang qi of women; thus, long-term use leads to impotence.) Long-term use causes impotence. When made into a paste for grinding accumulations, it can treat various diseases in children. To expel Taenia solium (Taenia), treat Ying Sheng Chong (Echoing Worm): For children with sweating and fever, take 4 liang of Lei Wan and half a jin of rice flour, grind into powder, and apply externally to the body. To ingest for expelling worms: Soak Lei Wan in water, remove the peel, slice, bake, and grind into powder. At dawn (wugeng time), eat a small amount of roasted meat first, then swallow one qianbi dose with thin porridge. It must be taken during the first half of the lunar month for the worms to be expelled.
[Discussion] Lei Wan is condensed from the residual qi of bamboo. Bamboo takes root deep in autumn and nurtures shoots in winter; thus, it is born from clear-cold qi, conforming to the yin of Metal and Water located below. This substance possesses a clear-yin flavor and nature, and can also disperse and promote flow. Using it to circulate and clear heat in qi and blood—is it not an excellent remedy? However, general use may inadvertently damage yuan qi.
[Differentiation and Treatment] Strictly avoid using the red variety for medicinal purposes; it must be processed before use.
When burning to extract juice for medicine, only Dan Zhu (Light Green Bamboo) is used. Its flesh is thin, and there is powder between the nodes. (Su Song) Dan Zhu is now called Shui Zhu (Water Bamboo), with two types: large and small. It has abundant, sweet juice. Chen Cunren stated that all bamboos except Ku Zhu (Bitter Bamboo) are Dan Zhu, which is incorrect. (Li Shizhen) There is another herbaceous plant with stems like iron wires and leaves resembling young millet, over a chi long, also named Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba). Folk commonly harvest it to promote urination and treat throat bi (sore throat/swelling) with miraculous effect. This is quite different from Lei Wan. (Jia Mo)
The flavor is pungent, neutral, sweet, and cold; its action can ascend and descend, belonging to yang within yin. It enters the Foot Yangming and Hand Shaoyin meridians. It mainly treats mania, restlessness, high fever, headache, cephalalgia due to wind, phlegm-heat in the chest, cough with rebellious qi. It further eliminates deficiency vexation, clears the heart and supplements qi, dissipates heat-toxin from hematemesis, treats xiao ke (wasting-thirst), promotes urination, and treats lin syndrome (dysuria).
Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Folium) has a bitter and cold flavor, so it can clear heart heat, cool the lungs and heart, dispel summerheat and detoxify, treat childhood vexation-heat, and strengthen the stomach qi of men. (Zhang Yuansu) Dan Zhu Ye belongs to yin containing slight yang; its pungent and neutral nature removes heat, soothes the spleen, and supplements yuan qi. (Zhang Yuansu, Li Dongyuan) It removes vexation-heat caused by new or old wind pathogens and stops wheezing and rebellious qi. (Li Dongyuan) Decoct in water, mix with five qian of cooked Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) powder, take before bed to treat insomnia due to heart deficiency. Combined with Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Zao Ren, Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Shen (Poria cum Radix), Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris), and Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), it treats heat accumulation in the Heart meridian, deficiency vexation, and insomnia. Added to Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction), it treats febrile disease with vexation-heat, excessive thirst, and epidemic jaundice. Formula: Dan Zhu Ye 5 sheng, Xiao Mai (Tritici Fructus) 7 sheng, Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 3 liang, water 1 dou 5 sheng, decoct to 7 sheng, take all at once for cure. Note: Mania and restlessness differ from deficiency vexation. Using Bai Hu Tang with Dan Zhu Ye to treat febrile disease with vexation-heat and excessive thirst belongs to the category of mania and restlessness. Using Dan Zhu Ye Tang (containing only Dan Zhu Ye, Mai Dong, Gan Cao, Xiao Mai, Sheng Jiang, Da Zao), adding Ren Shen for palpitations/deficiency, and Nuo Mi for weakness, to treat postpartum shortness of breath and restlessness, belongs to the category of deficiency vexation. Deficiency vexation further differs by qi and blood. For example, Jia Wei Dan Zhu Ye Tang uses Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) instead of Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) to treat persistent heat after sweating and purgation in pregnancy, indicating deficiency in the blood level. Zhu Ye Dang Gui Tang, combining Ren Shen and Bai Zhu, using only Dan Zhu Ye and Mai Dong to clear postpartum deficiency heat, treating dry mouth, thirst, and aversion to cold drinks/food, indicates deficiency in the qi level. From this, we understand the application for xiao ke, as well as for high fever, cephalalgia due to wind, hematemesis, heat-toxin, and wind pathogens, all resulting from yang lacking yin leading to hyperactive yang. What is called "supplementing yuan qi" is essentially yang containing yin.
