This is the white eel (Anguilla bicolor). It resembles the yellow eel but has a larger abdomen. It has a fleshy fin on the back connecting to the tail. It has no scales but has a tongue. The abdomen is white. It contains the most fat and oil. There is yellow grease on the back.
Golden-threaded eel.
The taste is sweet. The nature is neutral and cold. It has slight toxicity. (It often shares burrows with water snakes.) It treats transmittable consumption (Chuan Shi Zhu Qi), asthenia due to overwork. It warms the waist and knees, and restores yang. It treats damp Hong Kong foot (a type of gouty arthritis or severe edema in the lower limbs), dampness in the waist and kidneys, and "worm heart" (a sensation of movement or pain in the chest/heart area attributed to parasites). Near fishing huts. Often placing bones in clothing chests.
[Discussion] The white eel is good at digging deep burrows to hide. It inherits the yin qi from the earth. Its taste is sweet and its nature is cold; therefore, it can nourish yin to treat asthenia due to overwork. According to Meng Shen's assertions, humans thus gather its pathogenic qi for transformation. This is generally because water and soil are diseased by damp transformation, and wind transformation causes disasters. Ancient sages discussed worms saying that wood transforms from earth. Among the listed nine worms, there are five-zang labor heat, as well as residual toxins after illness, generated by stagnation and accumulation of qi and blood. Inferring from this, what the white eel treats is the local earth's yin qi dissipating heat. It does not allow damp transformation to become stagnant. It prevents the stagnant pathogenic qi of damp transformation from coiling and transforming into wind disasters. Thus, *Bie Lu* records this substance specifically for killing worms. (It is advisable to refer to the principle of combining Earthworm [Di Long] to treat wind infiltration in the Kidney Zang.) Ultimately, it treats dampness through nourishing yin, and restores yang through treating dampness. This is the substantial merit of tonifying asthenia and benefiting the five zang organs.
Head and bone
Roasted and ground into powder for medicinal use. It treats infantile malnutrition dysentery (Gan Li), intestinal wind bleeding, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea. Burned to ash, it is applied to malignant sores. Burned, it is used to fumigate hemorrhoids. It kills various worms. Those with consumption worms should frequently eat eel and chew its bones. Presumably, the meat of this fish best nourishes yin and spirit. Its bone marrow best kills worms. Moreover, its bone marrow flows between the teeth, simultaneously killing tooth worms. It can stop toothache. If fresh eel is unavailable, eating salted eel and chewing the bones is also acceptable. Those with black spots on the belly and white spots on the back have high toxicity and should not be eaten. Those weighing three to four jin and those swimming with heads raised above water should not be eaten. Those with weak spleen and stomach prone to diarrhea should not eat it. Eating it during pregnancy causes fetal disease.
The fish loves eels. It often floats to the surface itself. Flying birds peck at it, and it rolls them into the water to eat. Hence the name. Its bone is the cuttlefish bone (Hai Piao Xiao).
It is produced in coastal prefectures. Its shape resembles a leather bag. The mouth is under the abdomen. Eight feet grow together. There are no scales near the mouth. It has long whiskers. The blood color and gallbladder are pitch black like ink. Writing with it fades after a year. The outer skin is also black. The inner flesh is white. Only the back has bone. The shape is like a dice piece (Chu Pu Zi) but slightly longer. Both ends are pointed. The color is white, light, and brittle. It has layered textures. Scratching it with fingernails produces powder.
The taste is salty. The nature is slightly warm. It enters the Foot Jueyin and Shaoyin meridians. It is an essential medicine for blood disorders. It mainly treats women's red and white vaginal discharge and menstrual fluid. As well as blood dryness injuring the Liver. Hematemesis and hematochezia. It also treats blood obstruction and blood masses. It treats fright qi entering the abdomen. Abdominal pain encircling the umbilicus. Pain and swelling in the male genitals. Women's minor labial pain. Its salty taste moves into the blood. It is a medicine for the Jueyin blood level. Therefore, blood dryness, blood masses, amenorrhea, metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, dysentery, and infantile malnutrition are primary diseases of Jueyin. Chills and fever, malaria, deafness, goiter, lower abdominal pain, and genital pain are meridian diseases of Jueyin. Corneal opacity and tearing are orifice diseases of Jueyin. In cases of toxic inquiry, if there is fullness and distension in the chest and hypochondrium, interfering with eating. When the disease arrives, one first smells a fishy and rank odor. Clear fluid is discharged. One first expectorates blood. The four limbs are cold. Dizziness occurs. Bleeding from the anterior and posterior orifices occurs intermittently. The disease is named Blood Dryness. It is contracted when young after significant blood loss. Or after sexual intercourse while drunk. Qi is exhausted and the Liver is injured. Thus, menstruation becomes scanty and stops. It is treated with four parts Cuttlefish Bone (Wu Zei Gu) and one part Ru Xiang (Agarwood/Rosin - note: text says 'Ru', likely referring to Agastache or similar, but historically 'Ru' in this context often refers to Agastache rugosa or sometimes interpreted differently; here translated literally as Ru) ground into powder. Pillified with quail eggs. Size like small beans. Take five pills per dose. Drink with abalone juice. To benefit the intestines and heal liver injury. Observing this, there is no doubt it enters the Jueyin blood level. (Benhu) For hot tears in the eyes and all floating corneal opacities. Grind into powder, mix with honey, and apply to the eye. With Powder of Pollen Typhae (Pu Huang), apply to swollen tongue bleeding like a spring. With Powder of Sophora Flower (Huai Hua), blow into the nose to stop epistaxis.
