Lujiao Wan (Deer Horn Pill) is used to treat the five types of Wei syndrome (a category of diseases characterized by flaccidity and weakness of the limbs), with symptoms including loose skin, withered hair, dry blood vessels, emaciated muscles adhering closely to bones, weak sinews and bones, inability of diet to nourish the body, lack of interest in various affairs, weakness in the four limbs, withered nails, falling hair, blurred vision, dry lips, extreme fatigue making it impossible to support oneself.

Take two sheng of barley rice, place half at the bottom of the pot and half on top, cover with two cloth towels to separate, and steam for one day. Remove the herbs and barley, dry them separately by baking, and grind into fine powder. Use the wine in which the herbs were soaked, add clear wine, and cook the barley flour into a paste. Mix thoroughly, pound three thousand times, and form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take fifty pills per dose, administered with warm wine or rice gruel as desired, taken before meals. (From *San Yin Fang*)
A scholar suffered from a peculiar disease: his feet were neither sore nor painful, but every time he moved, they did not obey his will. Sometimes they twisted to the left yet fell to the right; sometimes they twisted to the right yet fell to the left. He walked crookedly and could not walk straight step by step. This is also a rarely seen condition, and its nature was unknown, with no records in books. I speculated that it was caused by soft sinews unable to bind the bones, hence the deviation, twisting, and falling during movement. Sinews are governed by the Liver, which belongs to Wood. When Wood energy is lax and uncontrolled, one should benefit Metal (Lung) to restrain it. Use Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), and Baishao Yao (White Peony Root) to tonify Lung Metal; Yiyiren (Coix Seed), Hugu (Tiger Bone), Guiban (Tortoise Shell), and Duzhong (Eucommia Bark) to strengthen sinews and bones; and Tiehua Fen (Iron Powder) to specifically control Liver Wood. Form pills with refined honey, take morning and evening, and the disease will be cured. (From *Chishui Xuanzhu*)
Wujiapi Jiu (Acanthopanax Wine) is used to treat Jin Wei (Sinew Flaccidity, a type of Wei syndrome characterized mainly by sinew tension or relaxation), with symptoms including spasms and pain, difficulty in flexion and extension.
Wujiapi (Acanthopanacis Cortex, half a jin) Can'er Zi (Xanthii Fruit, six liang) Gouqizi (Goji Berry) Yiyiren (Coix Seed, four liang each) Sheng Dihuang (Rehmannia Root, two liang) Muxiang (Costus Root, five qian).
Place the herbs in a bag and suspend them in a large jar of good wine. Soak for seven days, remove, dry by baking, and grind into powder. Form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed with refined honey. Swallow eighty to ninety pills with wine on an empty stomach. The remaining wine can be drunk freely; it is best to maintain a continuous presence of alcohol in the body. (Ibid.) (Note: *Liuyao* and other texts extensively record wine preparations for treating Wei syndrome, most of which are difficult to apply practically. This formula is preserved tentatively.)
Regulation Method: Naturally produced foods tend to be Yang, and rich flavors tend to generate heat; this is a maxim of the sages. However, for patients suffering from Wei syndrome, if they do not adhere to a bland diet, I know they cannot remain safe and sound. (From *Jufang Fahui*)
