Abdominal fullness and dry throat
The Taiyin meridian is governed by damp-earth. The Hand-Taiyin (Lung) meridian, belonging to Xin-Metal, transforms its qi within the damp-earth environment. When Yangming (Metal) qi is excessive, Taiyin qi transforms into dryness; when Taiyin (Earth) qi is excessive, Yangming qi transforms into dampness. Therefore, diseases located in Taiyin are generally associated with dampness, whereas warm diseases located in Taiyin transform dampness into dryness. This is because during winter, Kidney water fails to be stored properly, allowing ministerial fire to leak out and scorch Spleen yin. Contracting pathogens in spring and summer leads to stagnation of Ying (nutritive) qi and flourishing heat, which naturally further depletes body dampness. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian travels from the foot to the chest, runs along the anterior aspect of the body, distributes to the Stomach, and connects with the throat. Thus, when pathogens transmit to Taiyin, abdominal fullness and dry throat occur. If Taiyin dampness is deprived by Yangming dryness, resulting in hyperactive dryness and depleted dampness, death is inevitable. Treatment should involve clearing and dispersing pathogenic factors from the skin and hair, draining Yangming dryness, and nourishing Taiyin dampness. Huangsu Dan (Yellow Butter Pill) is the primary formula.
Huangsu Dan: Treats Taiyin conditions characterized by abdominal fullness, dry throat, fever, and thirst.
Floating Duckweed (Sanqian / 3 qian), Shengdi (Siyuan / 4 qian), Zhi Cao (Zhi Gancao / 1 qian), Danpi (Erqian / 2 qian, washed with wine), Shaoyao (Erqian / 2 qian), Shengjiang (Sanqian / 3 qian).
Decoct with flowing water until half a cup remains, and take hot. Another prescription removes Shaoyao and adds Jujube, named Fuping Dihuang Tang (Floating Duckweed and Rehmannia Decoction). It treats the same conditions.
Dryness and thirst with fever
Shaoyin is governed by Sovereign Fire. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian, belonging to Gui-Water, transforms its qi within the Sovereign Fire environment. When yang is excessive, Ding-Fire (Heart Fire) assumes authority and generates heat; when yin is excessive, Gui-Water violates the seasonal order and generates cold. Therefore, diseases located in Shaoyin are mostly cold, whereas warm diseases located in Shaoyin transform cold into heat. This is because failing to store essence during winter leads to Kidney water deficiency and fire leakage. Contracting pathogens in spring and summer coincides with a period of flourishing fire and deficient water. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridian penetrates the Kidney, connects with the Lung, and ties to the root of the tongue. Consequently, oral dryness, dry tongue, and thirst occur. The Kidney governs water; in the human body, water and fire stand in opposition. If Kidney water is exhausted while Heart fire is hyperactive, death ensues. Treatment should involve clearing and dispersing pathogenic factors from the skin and hair, draining the hyperactivity of Sovereign Fire, and replenishing the exhaustion of Kidney water. Ziyu Dan (Purple Jade Pill) is the primary formula.
Ziyu Dan: Treats Shaoyin conditions characterized by oral dryness, dry tongue, fever, and thirst.
