只此二语，度尽金针。后人不明此义，一遇咳嗽，不辨其所以致咳之由，但从肺治，又安怪其效者

《黄帝内经》说：五脏六腑都能导致咳嗽，并不仅仅是肺脏的问题。由此可见，心、肝、脾、肾四条经脉，各自都有咳嗽的症状，不过都是借道于肺而表现出来罢了。
仅仅这两句话，就穷尽了诊疗的关键秘诀。后世医家不明白这个道理，一遇到咳嗽，不辨别引起咳嗽的原因，只从肺脏进行治疗，又怎么能责怪那些见效少的，而无效的多呢！现在将肺脏引起的咳嗽，详细列在前面；心、肝、脾、肾引起的咳嗽，分条记载在后面；这样辨证时就能清楚无疑，施治时就知道如何下手了。
肺热导致的咳嗽，上焦轻微气喘，体表弥漫性发热，口干咽燥的，用玉环煎主治。

The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: "All five zang organs and six fu organs can cause cough; it is not solely the lung." This indicates that the heart, liver, spleen, and kidney meridians each have their own symptoms of cough, which merely pass through the lung.
These two sentences exhaust the golden needle (key principles) of diagnosis. Later generations did not understand this principle. Whenever they encountered a cough, without distinguishing the cause of the cough, they only treated from the perspective of the lung. How could one blame them for having few effective cases and many ineffective ones! Here, the coughs originating from the lung are detailed first; the coughs from the heart, liver, spleen, and kidney are listed subsequently; thus, when differentiating syndromes, one will be clear and doubtless, and when applying treatment, one will know how to proceed.
For cough due to Lung Heat, with slight panting in the upper jiao, diffuse heat on the body surface, dry mouth and throat, *Yuhuan Jian* (Jade Ring Decoction) is the primary formula.
