The Liver primarily functions to store blood, thus it is referred to as the "Sea of Blood." If mental exertion is excessive, causing a severe deficiency of Ying (Nutritive) Blood, the deficient Qi loses its anchor and moves transversely and rebelliously, resulting in distension and pain. The primary treatment is Tiaoying Lian Gan Decoction (Regulating Nutritive and Astringing Liver Decoction).
Tiaoying Lian Gan Decoction (Self-made Formula)
Danggui Shen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, two qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, one qian five fen, stir-fried with wine), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, eight fen), Gouqi (Fructus Lycii, three qian), Wuwei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae, five fen), Guangpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, one qian), Zaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, one qian five fen, stir-fried and crushed), Fuling (Poria, two qian), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, five fen), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, one qian five fen, stir-fried with clam powder), Dazao (Fructus Jujubae, two pieces), Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, three slices).
This formula represents the method for treating Liver Deficiency. In the Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Danggui, Chuanxiong, and wine-processed Baishao are used, along with clam powder-processed Ejiao; Shudihuang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae) is omitted due to concern that it may be cloying and obstructive. Gouqi, Zaoren, and Wuwei Zi are essential for Liver Deficiency. Combined with Fuling, Guangpi, Muxiang, Jiang, and Dazao, the formula regulates Ying and Wei (Defensive) Qi and harmonizes Qi and Blood, ensuring that tonification does not cause stagnation, moistening does not become greasy, unblocking does not damage, and the nature is mild, neither drying nor bitter-cold. Diseases arising from Liver Deficiency often involve Spleen and Stomach weakness even greater than in cases of Liver Excess. In recent trends, the number of patients with Liver Deficiency nearly surpasses those with Liver Excess. Zuyi treated a woman who suffered from heart pain radiating to the back; where the pain was located, the muscles swelled to that extent, and the skin surface also hurt, preventing sleep at night. Anesthetics were previously used for pain relief and sedation without any effect. Using this formula by the author, the condition reduced by more than half after one dose, and she could sleep that night. This confirms that the author's statement regarding "severe deficiency of Ying Blood, deficient Qi losing its anchor, and transverse/rebellious Qi causing distension and pain" is derived entirely from clinical experience, representing the most rational treatment for Liver Deficiency diseases. Subsequently, for all similar cases, this formula was applied with modifications, achieving immediate cures every time. The author’s unique creativity in formulating prescriptions for various deficiency syndromes is truly pure and profound. Note by Zuyi.
The Spleen naturally belongs to Wet Earth. When Cold Evil invades it, Cold and Dampness coagulate, constituting "Heavy Yin" (Extreme Yin). Fullness and pain extend from below the epigastrium to the umbilicus. The primary treatment is Yu Pi Tang (Spleen-Pleasing Decoction).
Yu Pi Tang (Self-made Formula)
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, one qian), Maozhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae, one qian), Fuling (Poria, two qian), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, eight fen), Sharen (Fructus Amomi Rotundus, one qian), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, five fen), Wuyao (Radix Linderae, one qian), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, one qian), Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, three qian, stir-fried), Yiren (Semen Coicis, four qian), Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, three slices).
This formula shares Baizhu, Fuling, Muxiang, and Sharen with Jiangshu Eren Tang (Ginger and Atractylodes Two Seeds Decoction) from the Distension chapter. Ginger is used as the chief drug, employing fresh ginger rather than processed ginger. Danggui, Banxia, Houpo, Guangpi, Sheng Guya (Raw Hordeum Sprout), and Shu Guya (Processed Hordeum Sprout) are removed, while Fuzi, Maozhu, Shenqu, Qingpi, and Wuyao are added. Its warming and drying potency exceeds that of Jiangshu Eren Tang. Note by Zuyi.
