The son of Li Kaogong, aged fourteen, suffered a sprain in the ankle. The area was swollen with a dull, lifeless complexion, and a small amount of thin pus was discharged at dawn. The liver pulse was slightly choppy (Se). This indicates injury to the Liver channel, where deficiency of Qi and Blood prevents suppuration and rupture, making it a difficult-to-treat condition. Immediate cessation of purgative or attacking agents was required. He did not believe this. Instead, he indiscriminately used Qi-moving drugs, ultimately dying from rotting sinews.
Zhang Diguan fell from a horse and injured his leg. After taking drugs such as Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Praeparata (Caowu), he developed epistaxis (nosebleed) and cough, arm pain, yellowing of the eyes, thirst, toothache, and scanty urination. This resulted from drying agents injuring the Lung and Large Intestine. I administered Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdi), Scutellariae Radix (Qin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Lian), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) to moisten the dryness of the Lung and generate Kidney Water. Consequently, urination increased immediately, and all symptoms ceased. Subsequently, using Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), [missing character, likely Atractylodis Rhizoma], Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Phellodendri Cortex, Scutellariae Radix, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, and Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Zhigancao) to nourish Yin-blood and support Original Qi, the wound healed.
Scholar Yu broke his leg. Although the bone had been set, he continued to have fever and incessant sweating three months later. Physicians specializing in orthopedics failed to treat him effectively. The left Guan pulse was surging and rapid (Hong Shu). This indicated excessive Fire of the Liver, causing blood to move recklessly due to heat. I prescribed Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Gardeniae Fructus, Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Rehmanniae Radix, and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng). The bleeding stopped, and the fever subsided. Thereafter, Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), Schisandrae Fructus, and Ophiopogonis Radix were used for treatment, leading to the healing of the wound.
In mid-autumn, the nephew of Tian Zongbo fell due to anger, experiencing generalized body pain, fever, and epistaxis. The liver pulse was surging and wiry (Hong Xian). I stated: Persistent epistaxis with a wiry and surging pulse indicates盛 (excess) Liver Fire restraining Metal (Lung). In spring, when Liver Wood flourishes, it may self-consume or damage Spleen Earth. This is not an easy-to-treat condition; one should nourish Kidney Water to generate Liver Wood and benefit Spleen Earth to generate Lung Metal. However, he indiscriminately used drugs to purge Liver Fire and died in the second month of spring.
A woman fell to the ground due to anger, suffering facial injury and bleeding, profuse phlegm, confusion, and trismus (lockjaw). I stated: This was caused by anger stirring Liver Fire, leading to rebellious Qi and depression, obscuring the Spirit and causing sudden collapse. Both hands showed surging and large pulses without order. She was treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Coptidis Rhizoma, Gardeniae Fructus, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Poria (Fuling), and Ginger Juice. She regained consciousness.
