Translation:
It is discussed that where there is phlegm, heat necessarily follows; where there is fright, wind necessarily succeeds. To benefit from resolving the fright and wind, is it not true that by dispersing the heat, the phlegm will not generate? This is the appropriate method obtained by practitioners of medicine. Regulating the symptoms and intercepting wind to stop convulsions clarifies the essential point. Thus, it is commonly seen in wealthy families that as soon as a child shows fever, without asking for the cause, they administer anticonvulsant medicines (Jing Yao), several pills daily. As months accumulate, although fright palpitations may cease and anxiety may be harmless, the child has taken many cold-cooling medicines, leading to Spleen-Stomach deficiency and weakness. If not vomiting, then diarrhea ensues, eventually becoming Slow Wind (Chronic Convulsive Disorder). Administering more anticonvulsant medicines only exacerbates the disease. Physicians regulating such cases should investigate the aftermath to avoid bearing the heavy burden of generated disasters.
It is discussed that Wind is governed by the Liver; slight disharmony of the Liver allows Wind to run rampant. Phlegm is affected by the Spleen; if the Spleen is not strong, Phlegm becomes abundant. Phlegm and Wind, Fright and Heat, these four syndromes race mutually, leading to circulation through meridians and accumulation, transmitting into other diseases. All instances of Wind-Phlegm attacking each other, persisting without transforming, hide within the Liver and Spleen, caused by dietary intake of hot and cold conflicting with each other, thus failing to dissipate spontaneously. Although treated, they recur after healing, continuing until adulthood. Moreover, Wind-Phlegm often remains between the teeth and cheeks, endless in expectoration and ingestion, with specific origins. The diseases caused by Wind-Phlegm may manifest as [convulsions] or panting, stiff jaw, or swollen cheeks. Affecting the Lung causes coughing; affecting the Heart causes mental confusion and susceptibility to fright. Physicians fail to quickly resolve the Phlegm, fearing Wind will become rampant; if they pursue the Wind, they suspect Phlegm acts as an obstruction. It is necessary to transform both Wind and Phlegm simultaneously using special decocted formulas, gradually reducing them until recovery. If dietary restrictions are not observed, medication yields no effect. Regarding the profound intent of treating Wind-Phlegm, one must not delay; prolonged neglect causes harm to manifest in disease, requiring careful observation.
It is discussed that heat obtained due to fright frequently occurs, not relating to the calm Heart but belonging to Blood. Furthermore, regarding Qi, Blood, Ying, and Wei, they must not circulate improperly, causing Fright-Heat to frequently attack. It may produce scabies and tinea, or sores and ulcers. When heat arrives, spirit is troubled and Heart is deficient; when heat leaves, lips are dry, mouth bitter, groaning and seeking drink, mentally confused and suffering hunger. Children endure this hardship; how can medicinal remedies save them? Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome) are generally irrelevant; Xie Wei (Scorpion Tail) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) have some efficacy. Further seek decocted remedies; if the disease does not reside in the Heart, saying it is difficult to treat requires sincere attention.
It is discussed: Does Fright Palpitation belong to the Heart, and can Panting be discussed similarly? I say: No, it is not due to Heart excess. If the disease were received by the Heart, it would not manifest as panting attacks. Thus, we know that the Liver governs Hun (Ethereal Soul) and the Lung governs the Nose; when Hun and Po (Corporeal Soul) are unsettled, fear and palpitation injure the Liver and Lung. The Lung receives fright and consequently receives panting, requiring water and fluids. When the Liver receives fright and develops panting, characterized by fine breathing or large gasps with open mouth, Liver and Lung are unfavorable. Calming the Heart, nourishing Spirit, regulating Qi, and stabilizing panting may not be entirely effective; one should utilize Yi Sun Hun Po Wan San (Decocted Powder to Benefit and Diminish Hun and Po), draining the Heart and tonifying the Liver, to see immediate effects. Regarding the difficulties described, further exploration is requested, do not stumble at Gao'an.
