To treat infants with difficulty in suckling milk, this prescription is suitable and yields immediate results. It also includes beneficial formulas such as Xiaochenxiang Decoction Pills (Little Ambergris Decoction Pills) and Yanchi Pills (Salted Fermented Soybean Pills).
Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Note: Context implies *Douchi* / Salted Fermented Soybean) [Shi Dou Chi] (7 grains, held in the mouth to peel off the skin) Nifen (1 qian bi) [Calomel].
Grind the above ingredients finely and form pills the size of hemp seeds. Administer 3 to 5 pills per dose, taken down with Huoxiang Decoction (Agastache Decoction), or applied to the nipple for the infant to suckle.
Discussion: In pediatric thirst syndromes, if the lips appear red like cinnabar over an area of three to five fen, it indicates a thirst level of three to five fen; if the redness covers seven to eight fen, it indicates a thirst level of seven to eight fen. If the lips are red, scorched, and black due to thirst, it signifies prolonged thirst with severe deficiency, where the disease worsens and transmits to extreme critical syndromes, indicating a perilous condition. Therefore, when children suffer from Gan accumulation-induced thirst (Thirst due to Malnutrition Syndrome), drinking water incessantly, this is due to deficient heat in the Heart and Lungs, causing scorched lips and cracked tongue; those with diarrhea-induced thirst exhibit emaciated body, mental fatigue, and weakness; those with dysentery-induced thirst show deficient heat accumulating in the Zang organs, furrowed brows, and abdominal pain; there are cases of thirst triggered by Shanghan (Cold Damage) patterns; and cases of empty irritability and incessant drinking caused by Pi Xi masses (abdominal masses). All these conditions belong to the disorder of the San Jiao (Triple Burner) and heat accumulation in the Five Zang organs, leading to irritability, dizziness, palpitations, and unhappiness of spirit. Now, based on the specific symptoms, the governing treatments and medications are divided as follows.
For pediatric San Jiao deficient heat causing thirst and incessant drinking, Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellow Pill) is suitable. Add a small amount of Poxiao (Mirabilite), reform into small pills, and take with Maimendong Yin (Ophiopogon Decoction).
For pediatric thirst caused by Shanghan syndrome, where lips and mouth are scorched, dry, and severely rigid, Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) is the primary treatment.
For pediatric thirst caused by Pi Xi masses that does not cease, Dahuang Huibing Zi (Rhubarb Ash Cake) is the primary treatment.
For pediatric thirst caused by hot diarrhea, Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) combined with Gegen (Kudzu Root) is the primary treatment; if accompanied by vexatious heat, Xiangru Yin (Elsholtzia Drink) combined with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) is used; if urine is astringent and blocked, with water passages obstructed, Cheqian Cao (Plantago Seed/Leaf) is decocted. Use Cheqian Cao powder and Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) decocted together as soup.
For pediatric Gan accumulation-induced thirst, Razi Shexiang Wan (Mosquito and Musk Pill) is the primary treatment.
Children may experience sudden asthma (Chuan) due to fright and exhaustion, suddenly affecting the Heart and Lung, causing Qi deficiency; there are cases of asthma due to excessive Lung Qi caused by Shanghan; there are cases of asthma due to wind-cough and Lung deficiency; there are cases of asthmatic wheezing due to deficiency-phlegm caused by Lung Qi injury from consuming salty foods; and there are cases of asthmatic wheezing due to Liver and Lung Qi rebellion triggered by toxic hot foods affecting the San Jiao. "Chuan" (Asthma/Wheezing) and "Qi Ji" (Shortness of Breath) share the same origin but have different names; they must be distinguished by their severity. "Chuan" refers to opening the mouth to breathe, with air rushing rapidly in the chest; "Qi Ji" refers to shortness of breath, with the mind confused and oppressed. When severe, it manifests thus. If Chuan Cu (rapid panting) occurs, do not wait for transmission; immediately employ methods to descend Qi, broaden the middle, tonify the Lung, benefit the diaphragm, resolve phlegm, and consolidate Qi to achieve recovery. Only in cases of Jing Chuan (Fright-induced Asthma), which is sudden and urgent, causing chaotic Heart and Lung functions, stagnation that does not dissipate, Metal and Fire clashing, rebellious and deficient Qi, and chaotic blood vessels striking the Zang Fu organs, must rapid treatment be applied to cure; otherwise, delay leads to worsening, severe cases lead to transmission, and upon transmission, the Eight Signs (Ba Hou) appear.
