Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder): Treats exhaustion due to blood deficiency, five-palm heat (heat sensation in the palms, soles, and chest), limb pain, heavy sensation in the head and eyes, palpitations with flushed cheeks, dry mouth and throat, fever with night sweats, reduced appetite with drowsiness, as well as fighting between blood heat, irregular menstruation, distending pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, and alternating chills and fever resembling malaria. It also treats young women with weak blood and yin deficiency, disharmony of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, phlegm-cough with tidal fever, emaciation of limbs, gradually developing into bone-steaming consumption (a chronic consumptive disease characterized by a sensation of heat emanating from the bones).
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine) Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, stir-fried with wine) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Baifuling (Poria, white part) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (each 1 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 5 fen; another version uses 1.5 qian)
The above herbs are cut into coarse pieces for decoction powder. Use 1.5 cups of water, 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome), 20 grains of Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed), decoct until 0.7 cup remains. Take at any time. Another version adds a small amount of Bohe (Herba Menthae), without Maimendong (This is most suitable for treating fever caused by liver-spleen blood deficiency and stagnation of Wood Qi failing to disperse. The use of Maimendong removes the vexation of the five palms, while Bohe clears heat from the muscle and bone; one opens the exterior, the other clears the interior, showing differences, all prescribing medicine according to the disease). If heat is severe, add Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) and Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), stir-fried. For bone-steaming, add Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) and Digupi (Cortex Lycii). For cough, add Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) and Ziwan (Radix Asteris). For vomiting phlegm, add Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), and Gualouren (Semen Trichosanthis). For indigestion, add Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi) and Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata). For thirst, add Maimendong and Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis). For heat in the chest, add Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) and Zhizi. For palpitations, add Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) and Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae). For hematemesis, add Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens), and Mudanpi. For spontaneous sweating, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali) and Suanzaoren. For chronic diarrhea, add Chaohei Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, charred black). For generalized body pain, add Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), to benefit the joints. For trembling of hands and feet, add Fangfeng, Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), and Bohe. For irritability causing chest and diaphragm fullness, add Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), and Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi). For anger injuring the liver causing blurred vision, add Longdancao (Radix Gentianae), Huanglian, and Zhizi. For lower abdominal pain, add Yanhusuo (Rhizoma Corydalis) and Xiangfuzi (Fructus Cyperi Rotundi). For amenorrhea, add Taoren (Semen Persicae), Honghua (Flos Carthami), and Sumu (Lignum Sappan). For blood masses on the left abdomen, add Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii), Pengze (Rhizoma Curcumae), Taoren, and Honghua. For qi masses on the right abdomen, add Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), and Binglang (Semen Arecae). (These modifications are balanced and serve as valid methods.)
Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder): Treats women with consumption-heat and emaciation, painful and vexed limbs, mental restlessness with dry mouth, and loss of appetite.
Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Danggui (each 7.5 qian) Chi Fuling (Poria, red part) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, stir-fried) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) (each 1 liang) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1.5 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 1.5 qian)
The above herbs are cut into coarse pieces. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 1 cup of water and 5 slices of Shengjiang until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
Ziqin San (Young Scutellaria Powder): Cools the Heart and Lungs, resolves consumption-heat, harmonizes Ying and Wei Qi, and ensures uninterrupted blood flow.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 1 liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Baifuling (Poria, white part) Ziqin (Radix Scutellariae, young root) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) (each 0.5 liang) Kugen (Radix Platycodonis, 2.5 qian)
The above are made into coarse powder. First, decoct a handful of Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa Textilis) and 70 grains of Xiaomai (Fructus Tritici Levis) in 3 cups of water with 3 slices of Jiang (Ginger) until 1.5 cups remain. Add 3 qian of the herb powder and decoct again until 0.7 cup remains. Strain and take warm. (Compared to the previous formula, it lacks four ingredients, and uses Chi Shaoyao instead, revealing the intent of tonification and purging. The use of Zhuye and Xiaomai as guides emphasizes the focus on the Heart and Lungs.)
Zhimu San (Anemarrhena Powder): Treats women with consumption-heat, emaciation with high fever, painful and vexed limbs, throat discomfort, and reduced desire for food.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) (each 1 liang) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, stir-fried) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, stir-fried) Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) (each 7.5 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried and slightly reddened, 0.5 liang)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 1 medium cup of water, 0.5 slice of Shengjiang, and 27 leaves of Dan Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa Textilis) until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. (This formula differs from the previous Huangqi San by lacking Renshen, Huangqi, Danggui, Fuling, and Digupi, but adding Zhimu, Shegan, and Shengma, focusing on throat discomfort. However, Renshen and Huangqi have warnings against harming the lungs if lung heat exists, hence their exclusion. Zhimu and Shegan purge fire and may loosen bowels, requiring careful consideration. If reduced appetite stems from throat discomfort, it can be used; if from spleen-stomach insufficiency, it should not be used lightly. Examine clinically.)
Banxia San (Pinellia Powder): Treats women with heat-consumption, vexed thirst and dry mouth, emaciation and weakness, limb pain, occasional chills and fever, rebellious phlegm and vomiting, and loss of appetite.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Bei Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, vinegar-fried) (each 1 liang) Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae) (7.5 qian) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) Kugen (Radix Platycodonis) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Chi Fuling (Poria, red part) Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) Wumei Rou (Endocarpium Pruni Mume) (each 0.5 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 2.5 qian)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 3 slices of Shengjiang in water and taken warm. (Modern practitioners consider Banxia and Dafupi, being drying, contraindicated for consumption-heat, yet ancient formulas name this after Banxia to treat heat-consumption, which seems strange. Moreover, claiming it treats vexed thirst and dry mouth is even more peculiar. However, Qinjiao treats joint pain, Banxia treats rebellious phlegm vomiting, Biejia combined with Chaihu treats chills and fever, and Wumei combined with Renshen and Maimendong treats dry mouth. Dafupi controls the stagnating qi of Renshen and Huangqi. Though strange, there is no doubt. Reflecting on this, one laments that many today do not follow ancient methods.)
Qinjiao San (Gentian Powder): Treats heat in the Heart Meridian, coagulation and stasis of blood vessels, and five-palm vexation and fatigue.
Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (each 1 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) (each 0.5 liang) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Yujin (Radix Curcumae) Sumu (Lignum Sappan) (each 2.5 qian)
The above are made into fine powder. Each dose is 1.5 qian, decocted with 1 cup of water and a small amount of Honghua (Flos Carthami) until 0.7 cup remains. Take warm. If meridians are harmonized, do not use Honghua. Avoid alcohol and hot foods. This formula can be taken for one year. (This formula uses Dihuang and Maimendong to cool blood heat, Qinjiao and Digupi to remove bone-heat; these three treat blood vessel stasis. Adding a little Honghua demonstrates the function of generating blood. Strictly avoid alcohol and heat to prevent aggravating heat. However, only true Yujin allows for one year of use.)
Biejia Dihuang Tang (Softshell Turtle and Rehmannia Decoction): Treats heat-consumption, vexed hands and feet, palpitations and oppression, dry blood in the Blood Chamber of women, emaciation, and failure to build muscle.
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, vinegar-fried) Shu Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, wine-soaked) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Fuling (Poria) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii) Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) (each 1 liang) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi, not exposed to fire) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried)
The above are cut. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 4 slices of Shengjiang and half a Wumei (Fructus Pruni Mume) in water and taken warm. (This formula uses Dihuang, Danggui, and Maimendong to nourish Ying blood and vessels, Si Jun Zi Tang elements and Shihu to clear the stomach and tonify the spleen, and Chaihu, Biejia, and Qinjiao to treat bone-steaming consumption-heat. It is also a modification of Ba Wu Tang. However, using Rougui as an assistant makes me hesitant to accept it as a standard method for heat-consumption. Even if used as a method, pulse and symptoms must be carefully examined.)
Huhuanglian San (Coptis Chinensis Powder): Treats women with heat-consumption, emaciation, unblocked meridians, limb pain, dry mouth with vexed thirst, insomnia, and reduced diet.
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, 1.5 liang, vinegar-fried until yellow, skirt removed) Tianlinggai (Os Cranii Humanum, fried in butter until yellow) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, slightly stir-fried) Xijiao Xie (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved) (each 1 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Huhuanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis) Qinghao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (each 7.5 qian) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) Shexiang (Moschus, finely ground) (each 0.5 liang)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 1 medium cup of water, 1.3 qian of Shengjiang, and 7 stalks each of Tao Xin (Heart of Peach Twig) and Liu Xin (Heart of Willow Twig) until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
Xijiao San (Rhino Horn Powder): Treats women with heat-consumption, vexed heat in the chest and heart, loss of appetite, frequent limb pain, and sluggish meridians. (This is largely similar to the previous Huhuanglian San, but the potency is significantly different.)
Xijiao Xie (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) (each 0.5 liang) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) Huzhang (Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati) Fuling (Poria) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried until slightly yellow) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (each 7.5 qian) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Honglanhua (Flos Carthami) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, vinegar-fried until yellow, skirt removed) (each 1 liang)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 3 qian, decocted with 1 medium cup of water and 0.5 slice of Shengjiang until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time.
Honglanhua San (Carthamus Flower Powder): Treats women with heat-consumption, emaciated limbs, and unblocked meridians.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 1.5 liang) Honglanhua (Flos Carthami) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Guijianyu (Ramulus Corni) Huzhang (Rhizoma Polygoni Cuspidati) Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) Tugua Gen (Radix Cucumeris Melon) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried) (each 1 liang) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 0.5 liang)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 1 medium cup of water and 0.5 slice of Shengjiang until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. (Chi Shaoyao, Huzhang, and Tugua Gen all break blood and unblock meridians; Dafupi and Zhike broaden the chest and regulate qi; others merely clear the heart, cool blood, and resolve heat.)
Biejia San (Softshell Turtle Powder): Treats women with heat-consumption, thirst with high fever, painful and vexed limbs, gradual yellowing and emaciation, and mental restlessness and oppression in the chest.
Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, vinegar-fried until yellow, skirt removed) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (each 1.5 liang) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed, 1 liang) Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae) Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, slightly stir-fried) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis) (each 7.5 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried and slightly reddened, 0.5 liang)
The above are made into coarse powder. Each dose is 4 qian, decocted with 1 medium cup of water, 0.5 slice of Shengjiang, 5 cun of Congbai (White Part of Allium Fistulosum), and 50 grains of Douchi (Fermented Soybean) until 0.6 cup remains. Strain and take warm at any time. (According to these four formulas, they are largely similar with minor differences. Chaihu, Chi Shaoyao, Digupi, and Biejia are commonly shared, while Renshen, Huangqi, Dahuang, Zhike, and Dafupi vary in inclusion or exclusion. Like a wheelwright's skill, there is subtlety in application; clinical examination of symptoms is essential.)
Ejiao Wan (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill): Treats consumption-cough, bleeding and hemoptysis, fever with afternoon exacerbation (buke fever), thirst, and night sweats.
Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini, stir-fried) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Juanboye (Herba Selaginellae Tamariscinae) Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae, stir-fried) Daji Gen (Radix Taraxaci) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, stir-fried) Jisu (Herba Elsholtziae) (each 1 liang) Baiziren (Semen Biotae) (stir-fried) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, hearts removed) (each 0.5 liang)

The above are made into fine powder. Take one good pig stomach, wash it clean, put the herb powder inside, sew it shut with thread, steam until soft and cooked, then grind in a porcelain vessel into a paste. Form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills before meals with congee drink, and another dose before noon meal.
