Di Bu Rong (Aristolochia contorta), has a bitter taste and is warm in nature, and is toxic. It treats all types of malaria. It induces vomiting of phlegm and causes food to reflux; it is contraindicated for those with qi deficiency. Its ability to induce vomiting of phalk is stronger than that of Chang Shan (Dichroa febrifuga), which may endanger life. Chang Shan's phlegm-inducing action has a "transmitting" capability, whereas Di Bu Rong lacks this capability, hence it is contraindicated for internal use.
── Cong Ben, Volume Middle
Di Bu Rong has soft, slender vines and leaves resembling small lotus coins. The root is large and fleshy. It has a bitter and pungent taste, is warm in nature, and has slight toxicity. It treats malaria and vomiting of phlegm causing food reflux. It is contraindicated for people with weak qi and blood; it should only be used externally for sores and not taken internally. It specifically treats various carbuncles, furuncles, back abscesses (Fa Bei), and unnamed swellings that have not yet suppurated. Mix with egg white for topical application, leaving the top exposed; after one night, it will suppurate. Once suppurated, do not apply further. For heat toxins, simply applying the leaves to the affected area leads to recovery. If taken internally, it causes poisoning; be cautious!
