Houttuynia (Houttuyniae Herba), with a bitter and pungent taste, is cold in nature. It treats lung abscess (a purulent inflammatory disease of the lungs) accompanied by coughing, consumption, and expectoration of pus and blood, where the sputum has a fishy odor. It also treats (Supplementary Formula: For treating lung abscess with expectoration of pus and hematemesis. Houttuynia, Trichosanthis Radix, and Platycladi Cacumen in equal parts are decocted and taken orally to achieve cure.) hemorrhoids, whether internal or external. Houttuynia is decocted in water, mixed with rice wine, and taken consecutively for three doses. The dregs are used to fumigate and wash the affected area; if pus is present, it will ulcerate and drain; if no pus is present, it will resolve spontaneously. ──Wuben Volume 2
Papaveris Pericarpium, with a sweet and astringent taste, is cold in nature. Its main functions are to astringe Lung Qi, stop coughing, stop lower intestinal bleeding, and treat chronic dysentery with red and white discharge. It is contraindicated in the early stages of dysentery or cough. ──Congben Middle Volume
Papaver somniferum, also known as Afuon, refers to the poppy flower. It treats dysentery and persistent rectal prolapse, possessing astringent properties. Its flavor is sour and astringent; the shell is cold and non-toxic. Its main functions are to stop dysentery and rectal prolapse, treat seminal emission, chronic cough, astringe the Lung, tighten the Intestines, and relieve pain in the heart, abdomen, muscles, and bones. ──Moban Volume 3
Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (referred to here as Wuwei Cao), also known as Jingou Ruyi Cao. It has five flavors, hence the name Wuwei (Five Flavors). It is slightly cold in nature. It dispels wind, brightens the eyes, reduces nebula, dissipates all types of wind-heat, treats pulmonary consumption with cough, fever, liver heat with consumption-like symptoms and aversion to cold, enters the sinews and collaterals, and treats bone and joint pain and phlegm-fire syndromes. (Single Herb Formula: For treating jade nebula or foggy nebula on the eyes, and blindness. Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (2 qian), Eyebright Herb (1 qian), Equisetum Hiemale (0.5 qian), and Celosiae Semen (0.5 qian) are combined and decocted for oral administration.) ──Congben Middle Volume
Dicliptera chinensis (referred to here as Dicai Guo), with a pungent and sour taste, is slightly cold in nature. It enters the Liver Meridian and travels through the Yangming Meridian. It breaks blood stasis and qi stagnation, soothes Liver Qi constraint, treats sudden redness and pain of the eyes due to wind-fire, dispels wind, reduces nebula obstructing vision. Since liver qi constraint leads to nebula formation, dispersing liver qi causes the nebula to recede spontaneously. However, it can be used for Liver excess patterns but is contraindicated for Liver deficiency patterns. It treats women with blocked milk secretion, swelling, hardness, and pain, as well as redness, swelling, and abscess formation.
Dicai Guo produces white flowers; green flowers are good for ophthalmology; purple flowers are effective for milk blockage pain; yellow flowers are effective for abdominal pain due to cold.
(Eccentric Formula: For treating women with blocked milk secretion, or infants blown upon, or self-compression causing milk blockage. Symptoms include headache, aversion to cold, fever, dry mouth, lethargy, redness, swelling, hardness, and stabbing pain around the nipple. Ancient single-herb formulas treated milk blockage pain; this modified formula adds efficacy. Dicai Guo (2 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizome (1.5 qian), Tangerine Peel (0.5 qian), Bupleurum Root (1 qian), Angelica Dahurica Root (1 qian), Trichosanthes Root (1 qian), Licorice Root (Note: The nipple belongs to the Jueyin Liver Meridian, and the area beside the breast belongs to the Yangming Stomach Meridian. If the nursing mother fails to regulate her lifestyle, anger and constraint cause Jueyin Qi to stagnate and Yangming Milk to fail to ascend, leading to redness, swelling, and pain in the breast. This formula uses Dicai Guo, Tangerine Peel, Chuanxiong, and Bupleurum to move constrained and rebellious Qi in the Liver Meridian; Angelica Dahurica and Trichosanthes Root to ascend Yangming Milk; Licorice to harmonize the middle and warm the Liver; and Honeysuckle Flower to reduce redness, swelling, heat, and toxicity. Milk flow will naturally resume, resolving either by ulceration or dispersion, depending on the syndrome.)
(Added Supplement: For treating acute red fire eyes, wind-heat swelling and pain, photophobia, and nebula obstructing vision. Dicai Guo (1 qian), Chuanxiong Rhizome (1 qian), Tribulus Terrestris Fruit (1 qian, remove spines and crush for juice), Equisetum Hiemale (0.5 qian), Eyebright Herb (1 qian), White Chrysanthemum Flower (1 qian), Scutellaria Root (1 qian), Gardenia Fruit (1 qian), Cicada Slough (1 qian, remove head and feet), guided by one slice of sheep liver decocted and taken orally.) ──Congben Upper Volume
