All versions lack the character "Pian" (Chapter). Ma Yun states: Inside, there is rampant Yin-Xie (abnormal pathogenic factors) spreading widely, causing restless sleep and dreams; hence the chapter name.
Rampant Yin-Xie spreading widely. Zhang Yun explains: This refers to strange pathogenic factors causing dreams, with infinite variations. Jian An notes: Pan means to scatter. The *Book of Songs* (Odes of Bin) says: "While the ice has not yet melted."
Correct pathogenic factors invading from outside into inside (textual note), prone to dreaming. Another version reads "Ji Yin" instead of "Fan Yin". Zhang Yun explains: What is called "Zheng-Xie" (Correct Pathogen) does not refer to normal wind pathogens. Any influence on the exterior regarding Yin-Yang or fatigue/exertion, and any internal movement of desires for sounds/colors or sensual cravings that interfere with the body and mind, are all termed Zheng-Xie. These non-exceptedly invade from outside into inside. Because their transformations are elusive and have no fixed abode, when they internally contaminate the Zang organs, they disrupt Ying (Nutritive Qi), Wei (Defensive Qi), Hun (Ethereal Soul), and Po (Corporeal Soul) without order, thereby causing dreams corresponding to whatever was perceived.
Excess in the lower part leads to dreaming of following/chasing; extreme hunger leads to dreaming of taking/receiving. *Jia Yi Jing* reads "Xia Sheng" (Excess in Lower) for "Xia Shen" and "Shen Ji" (Extreme Hunger) for "Sheng Ji". Ma Yun states: "Shen" should be read as "Sheng" (Excess), and "Sheng" should be read as "Shen" (Extreme).
Lung Qi excess leads to dreaming of flying. Zhang Yun explains: The Lung's emotion is sorrow, thus dreaming of fear and crying; the Lung governs Qi, thus dreaming of flying.
Body feels heavy and cannot lift. *Jia Yi Jing* adds the characters "Hand and Foot" after "Heavy".
Waist and back feel disconnected. Zhang Yun explains: The waist is the mansion of the Kidney; thus, if the waist and spine feel unconnected.
These twelve cases of Excess. Ma Yun states: Regarding these twelve cases of Excess, in the Fu organs it is excess externally, and in the Zang organs it is excess internally. Whenever a dream occurs, one can know which Zang or Fu organ harbors the pathogen, and immediately use acupuncture to drain it. The pathogen can be eliminated instantly. This is draining the Fu for Fu-dreams and draining the Zang for Zang-dreams.
Jue Qi (Rebellious Qi) lodges in the Heart. Zhi Yun explains: Wherever pathogenic factors gather, Correct Qi must be deficient. The previous chapter discussed the excess of pathogenic factors; this chapter discusses the deficiency of Correct Qi. Jue Qi is deficient Qi, rebelling between the Zang and Fu organs; "Ke" (lodging) means pressing against the exterior of the Zang and Fu organs.
Dreaming of ruined houses and wind/rain. Zhang Yun explains: The Spleen belongs to Earth and governs Dampness.
Dreaming of wandering/traveling. Zhang Yun explains: The Bladder belongs to the Foot-Taiyang Meridian, which is the exterior of the Three Yang meridians. Ma Yun explains: Since the Bladder meridian runs through the head, neck, back, waist, and feet...
Dreaming of fields. Ma Yun explains: The Large Intestine is the official of transmission; its twists and vastness resemble fields. Zhi Yun explains: Fields are where grain and water grow. The Large Intestine, as the official of transmission, receives residues of food and water, separating clear fluids from turbid ones. Dreaming of fields indicates deficiency of Large Intestine Qi.
Dreaming of gathering towns and thoroughfares. *Jia Yi Jing* reads "Xing Jie" (Walking Street) for "Chong Qu". Ma Yun explains: Dreaming of gathering towns or important thoroughfares. Since the Small Intestine is the official of reception, where substances gather, it resembles towns and streets. Jian An notes: Chong, according to *Shuo Wen*, means a passage, synonymous with street. Qichong acupoint is also named Qijie, which confirms this.
Dreaming of self-mutilation/cutting open. Zhang Yun explains: The Gallbladder governs decision-making and its Qi is rigid. Ku (cut open), pronounced Ku, means to disembowel.
Dreaming of gardens/pits. *Qian Jin Fang* reads "Chi Qu Xing" (Ponds, Channels, Traps). Zhang Yun explains: Dan is synonymous with Jiao (cellar). Zhi Yun explains: Dan, pronounced Jiao, means an underground storage place. Jian An notes: *Kaogong Ji* commentary states: Digging earth is called Dan, pronounced Jiao. Wa, pronounced Wu-Zhao-Qie, means concave. Yuan (Garden) is suspected to be a textual error.
Dreaming of bowing and rising/kneeling. *Jia Yi Jing* reads "Gui" (Kneel) for "Qi" (Rise).
Pathogen lodging in the Bao (Uterus/Bladder) leads to dreaming of excreting urine and feces. *Jia Yi Jing* reads "Sou Bian Li" (Smooth Urination and Defecation) for "Xie Bian". Zhang Yun explains: Bao is the urinary bladder; Chang is the Large Intestine. If lodged anteriorly, one dreams of urinating; if posteriorly, one dreams of defecating. Zhi Yun explains: Lodging in the Bao leads to dreaming of anterior urination; lodging in the Large Intestine leads to dreaming of posterior defecation.
These fifteen cases of Deficiency. Daozang Ben and Zhengmai Ben read "You Shu" (Has Number) for "Shi Wu" (Fifteen). Ma Yun states: Regarding these fifteen cases of Deficiency, in the Fu organs it is deficiency internally, and in the Zang organs it is deficiency externally. Whenever a dream occurs, one can know which Zang or Fu organ harbors the pathogen, and immediately use acupuncture to tonify it. The pathogen can be eliminated instantly. This is tonifying the Zang for Fu-dreams and tonifying the Fu for Zang-dreams. Jian An notes: This chapter on dreams differs slightly from *Su Wen: Mai Yao Jing Wei Lun*, *Fang Sheng Shuai Lun*, and *Lie Zi: Mu Wang Pian*; they should be cross-referenced.
