Dribbling, difficult urination accompanied by astringent pain is termed Lin syndrome (Strangury). Sudden abdominal fullness and inability to pass urine is termed Bi syndrome (Urinary Retention). Although the five types of Lin syndrome (Qi Lin [Gas Strangury], Sha Lin [Gravel Strangury], Xue Lin [Blood Strangury], Gao Lin [Paste Strangury], Lao Lin [Labor Strangury]) differ in manifestation as gas, gravel, blood, paste, or labor-induced, their root cause is always Kidney deficiency with Heat generating in the Bladder. If urine is red and astringent, moxa the Xiawan (CV10) acupoint. If urination is painful and dribbling, moxa the Guanyuan (CV4) acupoint. For symptoms of the five Lin syndromes, it is advisable to moxa the Zhongji (CV3) acupoint.
Xiawan (See Drum Distension chapter).
Guanyuan (See Heart and Abdominal Pain chapter).
Zhongji (See Hernia chapter).
The Classics state that when Heat from the Bao (Uterus/Bladder) shifts to the Bladder, it causes hematuria; this condition invariably stems from Heat. One should moxa the Guanyuan (CV4) acupoint for several moxa cones.
Guanyuan (See Heart and Abdominal Pain chapter).
Enuresis results from deficiency and decline of Middle Qi, leading to an inability to consolidate and hold. Elderly individuals with insufficiency of the Lower Yuan, and infants whose Bladder Qi has not yet solidified, often suffer from this. Generally, one should moxa the Sanyinjiao (SP6) acupoint. If there is frequent urination, moxa the Dajun (LR1) acupoint; for children with enuresis, moxa the Qihai (CV6) acupoint.
Sanyinjiao (See Flaccidity Syndrome chapter).
Dajun (See Corpse-like Coma chapter).
Qihai (See Labor Injury chapter).
Hematochezia includes Changfeng (Intestinal Wind) and Zangdu (Visceral Toxin). If fresh red blood is passed and stools are dry and constipated, it is named Changfeng. If the blood color is dark and turbid and stools are loose, it is named Zangdu. For Zangdu, moxa the Shenshu (BL23) acupoint; for Changfeng, moxa the Huiyang (BL35) acupoint.
Shenshu (See Bi Syndrome chapter).
Huiyang (Located on both sides of the coccyx, two cun lateral; alternatively, one and a half cun lateral to the upper side of the coccygeal joint).
The Lung and Large Intestine are exterior-interior partners. Thus, Lung Heat causes anal constriction, while Lung Deficiency causes anal prolapse. This may also be due to intestinal wind and hemorrhoidal fistulas, chronic dysentery or diarrhea, premature exertion by parturient women, or Qi injury from prolonged crying in infants. Generally, one must moxa Baihui (GV20) above and Huiyang (BL35) below.
Baihui (See Stroke chapter).
Huiyang (See Hematochezia chapter).
Ancients discussed hemorrhoids, distinguishing between Pin (Female), Mu (Male), Chong (Worm), and Xue (Blood) types. In reality, all are caused by accumulated Heat in the Large Intestine. One should moxa the Huiyang (BL35) acupoint for several moxa cones, hoping for peace and relief.
Huiyang (See Hematochezia chapter).
There are five types of Diarrhea: Spleen Deficiency, Kidney Deficiency, Damp-Cold, Damp-Heat, and Food Stagnation. Spleen Deficiency leads to poor appetite and frequent bowel movements; Kidney Deficiency leads to dawn diarrhea; Damp-Cold leads to loose stools and clear urine; Damp-Heat leads to passage of foul-smelling intestinal mucus; Food Stagnation leads to acid regurgitation and belching of rotten food. Physicians should treat them according to differentiation; Moxibustion practitioners should first select the Tianshu (ST25) acupoint, followed by the Huiyang (BL35) acupoint.
Tianshu (See Labor Injury chapter).
Huiyang (See Hematochezia chapter).
