Ju Fang Liang Ge San (Cool the Middle Burner Powder from the Bureau Formulary)
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Spleen, Stomach, Lung, Heart Protector (Pericardium), Gallbladder, Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and Large Intestine.
Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (Regulate the Stomach and Direct Downward Decoction)
Note: This is a formula for purging Stomach fire-heat.
Dang Gui Cheng Qi Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Direct Downward Decoction)
See the formula in the "Hot Topics" chapter.
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Spleen, Stomach, and Liver.
Mai Men Dong San (Ophiopogon Powder) treats men and women with accumulated pathogenic heat, causing vexation and oppression in the chest and heart, dryness of the throat and mouth, restlessness during sleep, or difficulty in defecation via the Large or Small Intestines, as well as sores on the mouth and tongue.
Xiao Ming (Niter, 1 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 3 qian), Xiao Cao (Herba Scrophulariae), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xi Jiao Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu, shredded), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus), Da Qing (Isatidis Folium, each 0.5 liang).
Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct in water, and drink.
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Heart, Lung, Liver, and Stomach. Like the aforementioned formulas, it consists primarily of salty and cold herbs. The *Neijing* states: "When fire-heat invades internally, treat it with salty and cold substances," which constitutes the correct treatment principle. However, one must consider the distribution of Qi and Blood above and below; users should exercise discretion in selection.
Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity) treats all conditions caused by fire-heat toxicity, characterized by mania, agitation, vexation, dryness of the mouth and throat, severe heat intensity, persistent heat after vomiting or purging, surging pulse, rapid breathing, repetitive speech (Zheng Sheng), red eyes, eye pain, irritability, and excessive thirst.
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Da Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, equal parts).
Chop the ingredients and decoct in water.
Note: This corresponds to Huo Ji Tang (Fire Agent Decoction) attributed to Tai Cang Gong. It is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Heart, Lung, Kidney, Bladder, Large Intestine, Small Intestine, and Stomach.
Zhen Zhu San (Pearl Powder) treats men and women with accumulated heat and toxic vapors in the Five Viscera attacking upward to the chest and heart, causing vexation and oppression, dry mouth and tongue, mental confusion, restlessness, and disturbed sleep.
Hu Po (Amber), Zhen Zhu Fen (Pearl Powder), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Tie Fen (Iron Powder), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, equal parts).
Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, administer with Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Heart, Kidney, and Stomach, belonging to the category of heavy sedatives.
Xuan Ming Da Jin Hua Wan (Xuanming Great Golden Flower Pill) treats various internal and external heat syndromes, including night sweats, teeth grinding, somniloquy (sleep-talking), palpitations, hematuria, strangury, hemoptysis, epistaxis, emaciation, headache, bone-steaming fever, Fei Wei (Lung Atrophy), and chronic cough due to consumption.
If Da Huang is removed and Zhi Zi is added, it is named Zhi Zi Jin Hua Wan (Gardenia Golden Flower Pill).
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, equal parts).
Grind into powder, add water to form pills the size of small beans. Take 20–30 pills per dose with fresh water.
Note: This is a modification of the Jie Du Tang, derived from the Yangming pattern. Although it claims to treat emaciation, headache, and the aforementioned symptoms, its use requires careful examination.
Dang Gui Long Dan Wan (Angelica Sinensis and Gentian Pill) treats Yin deficiency of Kidney Water with accumulation of wind-heat, manifesting as recurrent palpitations, muscle twitching and convulsions, mental unrest, stagnation of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), dizziness of the head and eyes, obstruction in muscles, chest, diaphragm, and throat, dryness and constipation of the intestines and stomach, irritability, manic behavior, cursing, fright, and other fire-heat syndromes.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Cao Long Dan (Gentianae Radix), Da Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, each 1 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lu Hui (Aloe), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, each 0.5 liang), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1 qian), She Xiang (Moschus, 0.5 qian).
Grind into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of small beans. Take 20–30 pills per dose with Ginger Decoction.
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney, and Stomach.
Shen Xiong Wan (Spiritual Ligusticum Pill) treats all heat syndromes. Regular use maintains health, resolves phlegm-fluids, digests food and alcohol stagnation, clears the head and eyes, unblocks the throat and diaphragm, disperses stagnation throughout the body, promotes smooth Qi flow, and leads to recovery, resulting in strong spirit, robust physique, and reduced illness burden.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, each 2 liang), Qian Niu (Pharbitidis Semen), Hua Shi (Talcum, each 4 liang), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 0.5 liang).
Grind into powder, make pills with water the size of small beans. Take 10–20 pills per dose with warm water.
Note: This is a formula for purging fire-heat from the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Stomach, Lung, and Bladder, and also regulates Qi and Blood. Its ability to descend damp-heat and guide out stagnation is very swift. However, the claim that regular use ensures strong spirit and robust physique contrasts with the previous formula's indication for Kidney Water Yin deficiency and consumptive disorders; such claims are likely not entirely accurate.
