Qian’s Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is used to treat diarrhea in children accompanied by stomach heat, restlessness, and thirst. It is suitable for administration regardless of whether the condition presents as a Yin syndrome or a Yang syndrome.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baifuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gancao (Licorice Root), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) (each 1 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (Note: According to Li Dongyuan's *Pi Wei Lun*, this refers to Gegen/Puerariae Radix).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and decoct with water for oral administration.
Commentary: This formula follows the principle of the Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) of the Taiyin meridian. It treats conditions in children characterized by deficiency of the Yangming meridian, disharmony of Yin and Yang, vomiting and diarrhea leading to fluid depletion, feverish sensation, dry mouth, and throat. Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao are sweet and warm; they tonify Stomach Qi and harmonize the Middle Jiao. Muxiang and Huoxiang are acrid, warm, and aromatic; they assist the Spleen in transformation and transportation. Baifuling and Gancao separate Yin and Yang and guide out dampness. Gegen is sweet and neutral; its dosage is double that of other herbs. Its qi is light and floating, capable of stirring up Stomach Qi to ascend and generate fluids, while also releasing wind-heat from the muscle layer. It is an excellent medicine for treating diarrhea caused by Spleen and Stomach weakness.
The Baizhu Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) in *Yi Jian Fang* treats the same syndromes as mentioned above.
Replacing Huoxiang with Huangqi (Astragali Radix) in the previous formula is correct.
Li Dongyuan’s *Huangqi Buwei Tang* (Astragalus Tonifying the Stomach Decoction) in *Yi Zang* is used to treat cases where bowel movements occur three to four times a day, consisting of loose stools but not excessive in volume, sometimes accompanied by diarrhea and borborygmus (rumbling in the abdomen).
Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Dangguishen (Angelica Sinensis Radix Heart), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Yizhiren (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 3 qian), Gancao (Zhi/Licorice Root, Honey-fried, 2 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 6 fen), Honghua (Carthami Flos, a small amount).
Cut the herbs into pieces, take as one dose, decoct with water, and administer before meals.
Li Dongyuan’s *Roudoukou Wan* (Myristica Pill) in *Mi Zang* is effective for treating chronic Kidney Diarrhea (Wu Geng Xie/Morning Dawn Diarrhea) that has not healed for a long time, especially when the pulse is deep, thin, and weak.
Poguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, baked in flour coating, equal parts).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with date paste, and form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take on an empty stomach with rice gruel.
In *Ben Shi Fang*, Poguzhi (4 liang) and Roudoukou (2 liang) are named "Er Shen Wan" (Two Spirits Pill) and are used to treat Spleen and Kidney deficiency.
*Ben Shi Fang*'s Wuweizi San (Schisandra Powder) is used to treat Kidney Diarrhea.
Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus, 2 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, half liang, selecting small green grains).
Stir-fry these two ingredients until fragrant and fully cooked, then grind into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, administered with aged rice gruel. A friend of mine suffered from loose stool once every morning at dawn (Wu Geng period); this is called Kidney Diarrhea. He was cured after taking this formula.
Ju Fang’s Jin Suo Zheng Yuan Dan (Golden Lock Origin-Securing Elixir) from *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* is used to treat diarrhea due to Kidney deficiency, frequent urination, and deficiency-cold syndromes.
Wubeizi (Galae Fructus), Fuling (Poria, each 8 liang), Zhusha (Cinnabar, separately ground, 3 liang), Longgu (Fossilized Bones, 3 liang), Zijiba Ji (Morinda Officinalis Radix, heart removed, 1 jin), Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, soaked in wine and stir-fried, 10 liang), Rongshong (Cistanche Deserticolae Caulis, washed and dried), Huluba (Trigonellae Foenum-Graeci Semen, baked, each 1 jin).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder, mix thoroughly with the separately ground drugs, use wine paste to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 30 pills per dose on an empty stomach, swallowing with warm wine or salted water as desired.
