Distinguishing the essence and coarseness of grains and beans: soybeans, wheat, millet, and sesame, although they are daily necessities for the people, also serve as medicinal materials for physicians.
Grains enter the Spleen (Pi Zang), beans enter the Kidney (Shen Zang), wheat enters the Liver (Gan Zang), millet enters the Lung (Fei Zang), and sesame enters the Heart (Xin Zang).
Jingmi (Coix Seed/Rice Grain) is warm in nature and harmonizes the Middle Jiao and Stomach; Shumi (Glutinous Millet) can treat Lacquer Dermatitis (Qi Chuang), relieve thirst, and eliminate irritability, but aged stored rice (Chen Cang Mi) must be used. Huangdou (Soybean) is said to dispel evil spirits and ward off malignancy, while Heidou (Black Soybean) is suitable for medicinal use. If one asks about "Huang Juan" (Yellow Scroll), it refers to bean sprouts.
Rice (Mi) has a sweet flavor and warm nature, and is non-toxic. Jingmi is the ordinary rice consumed daily. Shumi is the glutinous rice used for brewing wine; there are many varieties that cannot be fully listed. Its main functions are eliminating irritability and stopping dysentery. Among beans, only black ones are used medicinally, preferably stir-fried until cooked. They have a sweet flavor and neutral nature, and are non-toxic; other colors are unsuitable for medicinal use.
Removing stomach heat and nourishing kidney essence, consuming rice and millet can promote longevity. Filling the essence and marrow, and benefiting the Small Intestine, Jushengzi (Sesame Seed) is Hu Ma.
Millet (Su) has a slightly cold nature and is non-toxic; it treats Xiaozhong (Polyphagia/Excessive Hunger). Damai (Barley) and Xiaomai (Wheat) have a sweet flavor and slightly cold nature, and are non-toxic.
Mai Ya (Malt) in decoctions truly warms the Middle Jiao, indicating its ability to aid digestion. Mai Fu (Bran), if mixed with vinegar and applied to contusions and injuries, heals without leaving scars.
Mai Ya is malt. Fu is bran.
Lv Dou (Mung Bean) removes Dan Feng (Erysipelas/Heat Toxin) and resolves all kinds of toxins. For cholera with vomiting and retching, take Lv Dou Fen (Mung Bean Powder).
