[Symptoms of Damp-Phlegm] The body may be feverish or not, the weight is heavy, and the feet are sore. There is vomiting without thirst, fullness in the chest and diaphragm, frequent expectoration of phlegm, and physical weakness and fatigue. This constitutes the symptoms of Damp-Phlegm (Tan Yin).
[Etiology of Damp-Phlegm] Insufficiency of Middle Qi (Zhong Qi), inability of Stomach Yang to digest properly, and inability of Spleen Yang to distribute fluids result in the retention of food and water, transforming into Phlegm and Fluid Retention (Yin), thereby forming Damp-Phlegm.
[Pulse of Damp-Phlegm] Mostly presents as a Deep-Slippery pulse (Chen Hua). A Slippery-Full pulse indicates Stubborn Phlegm; a Slippery-Soft pulse indicates Deficiency-Stagnation; a Slippery pulse without Rapidness indicates Spleen-Dampness generating Phlegm; a Slippery-Rapid pulse indicates Damp-Heat.
[Treatment of Damp-Phlegm] Drying Dampness causes Phlegm to resolve naturally; regulating the Spleen ensures normal Phlegm metabolism. Er Chen Ping Wei San (Two-Aged Peel and Stomach-Ping Decoction) or Er Chen Qiang Fang Tang (Two-Aged Peel, Notopterygium, and Saposhnikovia Decoction) may be used. If Dampness stagnates and transforms into Heat, Zhi Lian Er Chen Tang (Gardenia and Coptis Two-Aged Peel Decoction) is indicated. For deficient persons, Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) is used. If accompanied by Heat, add Gardenia (Zhi Zi) and Coptis (Huang Lian); if accompanied by Cold, add Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang) and Cinnamon Twig (Gui Zhi).

Zhi Lian Er Chen Tang: Consists of Er Chen Tang plus Gardenia (Zhi Zi) and Coptis (Huang Lian).

(Referring to Knotted Phlegm and Stubborn Phlegm)
[Symptoms of Depressive Phlegm] Chest fullness and bloating, obstruction and astringency in the nine orifices, mental restlessness and vexation, or a sensation of a lump in the throat, restless sleep, gastrointestinal discomfort, interference with diet, rebellious Qi and difficulty in breathing, leaning on shoulders while panting. These are the symptoms of Depressive Phlegm (Yu Tan).
[Etiology of Depressive Phlegm] Injury from the Seven Emotions easily leads to stagnation and knotting. Lung Qi becomes stagnant, and Spleen Yuan fails to transport. Excessive thinking causes Qi to knot; prolonged depression generates Phlegm. All these fall under the category of Depressive Phlegm.
[Pulse of Depressive Phlegm] Mostly presents as Deep-Hesitant (Chen Se) or Deep-Slow (Chen Chi) pulses, indicating Cold Stagnation; Deep-Rapid (Chen Shu) indicates Heat; Deep-Full (Chen Shi) indicates Stubborn Phlegm; Deep-Firm (Chen Lao) indicates Internal Knotting.
[Treatment of Depressive Phlegm] For Cold Stagnation, use Acrid-Dispersing methods with Xiang Xiong Er Chen Tang (Cyperi Rhizoma and Ligusticum Chuanxiong Two-Aged Peel Decoction). For Heat Stagnation, use Clearing-Resolving methods with Zhi Lian Er Chen Tang (Gardenia and Coptis Two-Aged Peel Decoction). For Depressive Phlegm in the Lung Meridian, Jie Zai Hua Tan Wan (Jie Zai Phlegm-Transforming Pill) is used.
