1. When pathogenic heat is excessive and true Yang is simultaneously deficient, one may fear that purgation will lead to the collapse of Yang, yet failing to purge allows pathogenic heat to flare up again. The appropriate method is to use Fuzi Xie Xin Tang (Aconite Decoction to Drain the Epigastrium). The concurrent use of cold and hot herbs constitutes a disciplined army (indicating balanced and controlled medication).

1. If the heat syndrome is mild but worsens after the mistaken administration of Da Huang and Huang Lian, it is advisable to switch to Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Powder to Overcome Pathogens) with added Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). (This is to prevent the pathogen from sinking downward and becoming trapped, or because the medicine has damaged the Stomach Qi, in which case Zhu Fu [Atractylodis Rhizoma and Aconitum] must be used.) If the cold syndrome is mild but dryness symptoms appear after the mistaken administration of Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu (Aconiti Radix), treat with Huang Tu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction) and Dou Fen San (Bean Flour Powder) to resolve it. Subsequently, observe the specific syndrome and select the formula accordingly. If it is a deficiency-cold syndrome and Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Da Huang were mistakenly administered, the presentation resembles excess-heat: the tongue coating may be yellow or black, and the lips may be red or dry, yet moist rather than parched. Such cases require Zhi Yin Jian (Sedate Yin Decoction) combined with Fu Gui Li Yin Jian (Aconite and Cinnamon Decoction to Restore Yin) for cure.
Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng Powder to Overcome Pathogens) See above.
Huang Tu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction) Take yellow earth from three chi deep, decoct in spring water, and take orally.

Bai Hou (White Throat Diphtheria) reflects the true color of the Lung. The Lung governs the exterior, so the disease initially enters via the Lung. Since the practitioner has already administered exterior-releasing herbs to ventilate the Lung Qi, and applied powdered Musk (She Xiang) to scatter pathogens, the Lung Qi becomes further injured. Therefore, methods for tonifying deficiency after recovery must be thoroughly studied. Moreover, the Lung meridian is solely the Taiyin channel. If heat syndromes arise from excessive Stomach Fire in the Yangming, treatment requires bitter-cold purgation, which inevitably damages Yang. If cold syndromes arise from deficient Mingmen Fire in the Shaoyin, treatment requires acrid-warm support, which inevitably damages Yin. This applies to diseases of all meridians; one must assess the site of injury and tonify accordingly. However, individuals vary in their constitutional Qi. Some are Yang-predominant with Yin insufficiency; they should be treated by tonifying Yin while clearing residual heat, avoiding acrid-warm herbs. Others are Yin-predominant with Yang insufficiency; they should be treated by tonifying Yang while warming, avoiding cooling-moistening herbs. Some have both Yin and Yang insufficiency; they require gentle, balanced tonification, avoiding bias toward either acrid-warm or cooling-moistening herbs. Thus, when prescribing, one must examine both the source of the disease and the patient's constitution to avoid the contraindication of "tonifying deficiency" (making the deficient more deficient). Only when the pathogen is eliminated and Yuan Qi restored can the physician claim no fault. The following formulas are listed:
