Sudden fainting and loss of consciousness, unawareness of surroundings, and in severe cases, opisthotonos (body arched backward like a bow). The patient may recover spontaneously after a moment, only to relapse after a while. This is caused by blood deficiency allowing external pathogens to invade.
Dryness of blood resembling stroke syndrome. It is appropriate to clear heat and nourish blood using Jia Wei Ling Yang Jiao San (Modified Antelope Horn Powder) [Han 9]. In cases of sudden collapse due to unconsciousness, it is because the qi and blood are utilized to nourish the fetus, leaving the mother lacking in vitality, leading to dizziness and falling. Treatment should rely solely on dietary supplementation.
Deficiency of Kidney Water with Excess Fire. One should drain Heart fire (South) and tonify Kidney water (North) to pacify Liver fire, using Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) added with Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis) and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) [Bu 2].
External contraction of Wind-Cold. With aversion to cold and high fever, headache, and irritability, Xiong Su San (Ligusticum and Perilla Powder) is suitable [San 7].
Latent Heat within. After pregnancy, sleeping on hot bedding, consuming hot-natured foods, or taking potent tonic agents can cause heat to lie latent in the uterus. This heat subsequently combines with Liver wind-heat, attacking and obstructing; if it enters the brain, it causes dizziness and coma. Tian Dong Yin Zi (Asparagus Decoction) is appropriate [Han 10].
Damp-Phlegm in the Stomach. Damp-phlegm causes stagnation and blockage of qi and blood, resulting in paralysis and inability to move. Wu Yao Shun Qi Tang (Lindera Regulating Qi Decoction) should be used to induce sweating [San 6].
Wind and Fire fanning each other. Use Gou Teng Tang (Uncaria Decoction), added with Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit), and Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root). If phlegm surges, add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap); if wind is excessive, add Quan Chong (Whole Scorpion); if qi and blood are deficient, use Ba Zhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Gou Teng and Zhi Zi; if there is much irritability and heat, add Dai Hu (Dendrobium Stem) [San 8, Bu 5]. If accompanied by weakness and convulsions with sweat like oil, this indicates exhaustion of body fluids and is untreatable.
Fetal qi injured by heat-toxin. Symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, sudden swelling and nodulation of the cheeks and neck, severe pain, and vomiting. If complicated by phlegm obstruction, danger is imminent; urgently administer Xiao Feng San (Eliminate Wind Powder) [San 33].
Medicinal toxicity attacking the fetus, rushing upward to the heart and abdomen. Inability to speak, stiff neck, spontaneous sweating, and fever resemble Zi Xian (Eclampsia). The six pulses are floating and rapid; fewer than one in ten survives. Quickly use raw Bai Bian Dou (White Hyacinth Bean), ground into powder, and administered with well water.
When qi and blood fail to adequately nourish the fetus, the diffusion and drainage pathways become obstructed, causing stagnant heat in the Bladder that fails to transform, resulting in Lin syndrome (strangury). The method should prioritize nourishing blood while simultaneously promoting urination.
Damp-Heat in the Liver Meridian. Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Drain Liver Decoction) [Han 11].
Blood deficiency generating heat. An Rong San (Nourish Blood Powder) [Bu 8].
Blood overflowing into the Bladder (Pao) due to heat. Injury to meridians from overwork generates internal heat; excessive heat forces blood to overflow, so blood appears in the urine. Nourish blood and calm the fetus using Si Ling San (Four-Poria Powder) added with E Jiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin) [Xie 2].
Kidney deficiency failing to control water. Deficiency allows heat to lodge in the Bladder; Di Fu Zi Tang (Kochia Fruit Decoction) is used. Alternatively, Si Wu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction) added with Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark), Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) [Xie 3, Bu 7].
Abdominal distension and pain. This is due to Spleen and Stomach qi deficiency; Tai Yin Yin (Calm Fetus Decoction) added with Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) [Bu 9, He 8].
Lung qi deficiency causing short urine volume. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Shan Yao (Chinese Yam) and Mai Dong [Bu 6].
After taking diuretic and damp-draining agents, frequency increases further, or urination becomes difficult and obstructed.
Si Wu Tang added with Zhi Mu, Chuan Bai (Phellodendron), Huai Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), Fu Ling (Poria), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) [Bu 7].
Tetany of the legs and feet. Zuo Gui Yin (Left Restoring Decoction) added with Dang Gui, Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta Seed), and Zhi Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) [Bu 33].
Fetal pressure on the Bladder. The six pulses are fine and weak, indicating deficiency of both qi and blood, unable to support the fetus. Use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang to lift the fetus; then urination will naturally become unobstructed. If one forcibly promotes urination, the fetus will abort and die [Bu 6].
