Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 4 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Zhiren (Gardeniae Semen, 1 liang each), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 5 qian).
Yellow is the proper color of the Spleen. The Spleen's brilliance manifests in the eyelids, and its orifice is at the mouth and lips. Therefore, any disease occurring in both eyelids and inside/outside the mouth can be known as caused by Spleen Fire. Bitterness can purge fire, and cold nature can overcome fire; thus, Zhiren and Shigao are used. Aromaticity can awaken the Spleen, and sweetness can moderate the Spleen; thus, Huoxiang and Gancao are used. Fangfeng is chosen for its ascending and floating nature; it can both disperse latent fire within the Spleen and drain Metal (Lung) qi within Earth (Spleen), preventing the Mother organ (Heart) from harming it. This is a method of one herb serving two purposes, hence it is doubled.
Poem says: In Xiehuang San, Fangfeng is heavily used; Gancao, Huoxiang, Zhiren, and Shigao are halved. Mixed with honey and wine to swallow, clearing Stomach heat; it has special efficacy for itching and ulceration in the lower organs.
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba), Gancaoshao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma caulis).
Red belongs to Fire. "Daodi" (Guiding the Red) means guiding Bingding Fire (Heart Fire) to excrete through urine. However, all five Zang organs have fire; how do we know it is Bingding Fire? Because of red eyes, vexation, and yellow-red urine. Thus, Shengdihuang is used to cool Heart Blood, Zhu Ye to clear Heart Qi, Gancaoshao to retreat Heart Heat, assisted by Mutong, which directly enters the Small Intestine and Bladder to drain Heart exterior syndrome. If transmitted by other pathogens, Daodige Ban Tang should be appropriate.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhiren (Gardeniae Semen), Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Huashi (Talcum), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Gancaoshao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma caulis), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Fushen (Poria cum Ramus Pini), Dengxin (Junci Medulla), Hongzao (Jujubae Fructus).
When heat pathogen transmits into the Heart Meridian, cooling is achieved with Huanglian, Xijiao, and Zhiren. When Heart heat forces upward into the Lung, clearing is done with Huangqin, Zhimu, and Maidong. When it shifts downward to the Small Intestine, draining is performed with Huashi, Gancaoshao, and Dengxin. However, since the Heart portion is originally deficient, the pathogen can cross meridians to transmit. Therefore, Renshen, Fushen, and Hongzao are used to tonify.
Poem says: Four herbs of Daod San are Zhu Ye, Gancao, Mutong, and Shengdihuang. The original formula adds Huanglian, Huangqin, Xijiao, Huashi, Renshen, Maidong, Gancao, Zhiren, Dengxin, Juxi (Dengxin), and Hongzao. All descend to the Bladder, hence named Ge Ban Tang.
The meaning of "Ge Ban" is unknown, and no books have elucidated it.
