Boil winter white honey to make pills. If the pulse is weak and there is no fire, remove Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), and add Deer Antler Velvet (Rong) and Cinnamon Bark (Guizhi) in appropriate amounts.
Herbs and Dosages: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Lycii Fructus (Gouqi), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), Cistanches Herba (Rongshu) (each 2 liang); Astragali Complanati Semen (Shayuan), Poria (Fushen), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi), Pruni Semen (Ruiren) (shell removed), Tribuli Fructus (Jili) (stir-fried, pounded to remove spines), Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen (Zaoren) (each 1.5 liang); Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Dendrobii Nobile Caulis (Shihu - select *Dendrobium nobile*), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Saiga Tatarica Cornu (Lingyangjiao) (each 1 liang); Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (5 qian).
This formula is indicated for conditions where Yin essence has been inherently weak and Yang pathogenic factors are about to arise.
Yin essence is present in all zang-fu organs, not solely confined to the Kidney. Pathogenic wind and fire, being Yang pathogens, are they not also related to the fu organs? Since it is stated that the constitution is inherently weak, the irrigation of orifices and cavities is insufficient, allowing wind and fire pathogens to arise sequentially, manifesting as ocular diseases. Treatment should focus on dispelling pathogens and supporting healthy qi, ensuring harmonious and smooth interaction between Yin and Yang. To dispel pathogens and support healthy qi, slow treatment is beneficial rather than urgent; gentle nourishment is beneficial rather than harsh. Therefore, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Schisandrae Fructus, Cuscutae Semen, Lycii Fructus, Pruni Semen, Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen, and Cistanches Herba are used to regulate mental restlessness and calm the spirit. Saposhnikoviae Radix, Chrysanthemi Flos, Poria, Ophiopogonis Radix, Dendrobii Nobile Caulis, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, Tribuli Fructus, Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Saiga Tatarica Cornu, and Rhinoceros Horn are used to disperse wind-dampness and clear heat. This constitutes the direct treatment method. Used in conjunction with modifications of the previous formula, long-term administration will augment healthy qi, and vision will naturally recover. Once vision recovers, even at night, how can it not be bright?
Poem states: For restoring vision, Cistanches Herba should be selected; Lycii Fructus, Jujube Seed, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Tribuli Fructus, and Schisandrae Fructus are balanced properly; Rhinoceros Horn and Saiga Tatarica Cornu are more potent than Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix; Chrysanthemi Flos and Rehmanniae Radix have milder properties, while Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma is vigorous; expelling wind and sand resembles the efficacy of Dendrobii Nobile Caulis; Ophiopogonis Radix and Coptidis Rhizoma, including their rhizomes, achieve miraculous results.
Astragalus Membranaceus Radix (Huangqi), Lycii Fructus, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Cistanches Herba, Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Guijiao), Corni Fructus (Zaopi), Schisandrae Fructus, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Polygonati Rhizoma (Huangjing) (equal parts), taken mixed with honey water.
This formula is indicated for depletion of essence and blood, emaciation and haggard appearance, blurred distance vision, and lack of taste sensation in the mouth.
The aforementioned symptoms all belong to deficiency and damage. The Classic says: "For lung damage, benefit its Yang." Astragalus Membranaceus Radix, Lycii Fructus, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix serve this purpose. "For kidney damage, nourish its Yin," which is achieved by Rehmanniae Radix, Cistanches Herba, and Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum. "For liver damage, restrain its violent qi," requiring Corni Fructus and Schisandrae Fructus. "For heart damage, nourish its spirit and mind," requiring Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen. Dioscoreae Rhizoma and Polygonati Rhizoma can supplement nutritional sustenance; the lack of taste in the mouth is addressed by jointly tonifying the Spleen's deficiency. If external phlegm-fluids are present, add Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) and Poria (Fuling); if floating fire exists, add Ophiopogonis Radix and Asparagi Radix (Tian Dong); if blood fails to return to its source, add Cinnamon Bark (Guizhi) and Deer Antler Velvet (Lurong); if deficiency is extreme, add Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang). Take three times daily without interruption for ten days, then all five zang organs will be regulated. Hence, this formula is named "Quan Zhen" (Complete Truth).
Poem states: Complete Truth lies in turtle-breathing cultivation; one must understand the medicinal flavors. Lycii Fructus, Rehmanniae Radix, and Polygonati Rhizoma; Corni Fructus and seeds are also excellent. How many elders remain? They calmly discuss the principles of transformation.
