Eyelid stiffness and eye pain, with swollen and hard eyelids, indicate pain in the eyeball caused by blood stasis forming an nebula (corneal opacity). This is due to accumulated heat in the chest and diaphragm and hyperactive wind pathogen in the Liver channel. External application of ointment reduces swelling and redness from blood stasis. The internal formula is Liangge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder), containing Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Heishen (Scrophulariae Radix, also known as Xuanshen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus).
[Note] Eyelid stiffness and eye pain: at the onset, there is often a sensation of pain and distension; over time, the eyelids become swollen and hard, and the eyeball hurts. This originates from accumulated heat in the diaphragm and wind-toxin in the Liver channel rushing upward to the eyes. It is appropriate to use an eye wash to remove blood stasis, apply external ointment for swelling, and internally administer Liangge San.
Liangge San Formula
Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) (each 1 qian); Heishen (Scrophulariae Radix) (1.5 qian); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) (each 1 qian).
Grind into coarse powder. Decoct with two cups of water until reduced to one cup. Take warm after meals.
Red membrane drooping covers the pupil. The red membrane descends from the Qi wheel (sclera/conjunctiva) accompanied by wind. This belongs to heat rushing to the eyes from the Liver and Lungs, manifesting as tearing, pain, itching, and a vermilion-red color. The formula includes Lingyangjiao (Capris Cornu), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Heishen (Scrophulariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus).
[Note] Red membrane drooping: at the onset, a patch of red membrane appears on the upper part of the Qi wheel (conjunctiva/sclera), droops down to the Feng wheel (cornea/iris), and covers the pupil below. This is caused by heat from the Liver and Lungs rushing into the eyes, generating the red membrane, leading to tearing, pain, and itching. It is appropriate to take Lingyang Yin.
Lingyang Yin Formula
Lingyangjiao (Capris Cornu, sliced) (1.5 qian); Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Heishen (Scrophulariae Radix); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried) (each 1 qian); Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus) (2 qian).
Grind into coarse powder. Decoct with two cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain and take warm after meals.
A sheet of yellow membrane arises from the Qi wheel, rushes upward to cover the Feng wheel and pupil. The eyes are red, dry, tearing, with discharge, and severe pain. This is due to wind-heat attacking from the Spleen and Stomach. The formula is Tongpi Xiewei Tang (Unblock the Spleen and Drain the Stomach Decoction), containing Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Heishen (Scrophulariae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus). There is also Liying San (Instant Response Powder), containing Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Yangzhizhu (Daphnes Genkwa Flower), Ebusicao (Centipedae Herba), Shexiang (Moschus), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Xionghuang (Realgar).
[Note] Yellow membrane rushing upward: starting from the Qi wheel, a sheet of yellow membrane rushes directly upward from below to the Feng wheel, covering the pupil above. This is wind-heat from the Spleen and Stomach rushing upward to the eyes, causing the yellow membrane, tearing, redness, dryness, and extreme pain. It is appropriate to take Tongpi Xiewei Tang and externally apply Liying San.
