Translation of the initial eruption formula for smallpox/rubella: Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 2 qian, Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri) 1 qian, Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 1 qian, Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) 5 fen, Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae) 8 fen, Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) 3 fen, Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 2 qian, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 qian, Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi) 1 qian, Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 1 qian, Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take two doses; severe cases of pustules will surely turn favorable.
Formula for when pustules have fully erupted: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 1 qian, Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 1 qian, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 qian, Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 2 qian, Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 2 qian, Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 2 qian, Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri) 8 fen, Hong Hua (Flos Carthami) 5 fen. Decoct in water and take. If there is heat, add Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 5 fen, or Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) 1 qian, Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae) 1 qian; this is also acceptable. If there is fright, add Chan Tui (Periostracum Cicadae), removing wings and feet, 3 fen; if the color is black, add Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 5 fen; if stool is constipated and blocked, add Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 3 fen; if there is abdominal pain, add Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba/Rubra) 1 qian, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1 qian; if there is diarrhea, add Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae) 1 qian; if there is sweating, double the amount of Huang Qi (Radix Astragali); if there is phlegm, add Bai Jie Zi (Semen Mustardae) 1 qian; if there is itching, add Jing Jie Zi (Fructus Schizonepetae) 6 fen; if there is body pain, add Guang Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 3 fen; if the color is white, it indicates cold syndrome, add Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 1 qian, and increase the dosage of both Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) and Huang Qi (Radix Astragali); if the tops of the pustules do not protrude, it indicates Qi deficiency, double the use of Huang Qi (Radix Astragali); if the waist area is not full (referring to lack of fullness at the base of the pustule), it indicates Blood deficiency, add Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 1 qian, Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) 2 qian, which is sufficient.
Formula for the recovery phase of pustules: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 1 qian, Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 1 qian, Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae) 1 qian, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 fen, Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi) 3 fen. This lifts the Qi mechanism while simultaneously tonifying Lung Metal, allowing the skin and hair follicles to benefit from various tonic herbs. Decoct in water and take. If red, purple, dry, and sunken lesions appear, it indicates that heat has not subsided; add Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) 1 qian to this base formula. If the lesion color is white, black, gray-black, and sunken, it indicates cold and deficiency; add Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 3 fen, Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) 1 qian. During the suppuration stage, double the amount of Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), and additionally add Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 2 qian, Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 2 qian. For diarrhea, add Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) 5 fen, Fu Ling (Sclerotium Poriae) 1 qian. For palpitations and mental restlessness, increase the amount of Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng). For vomiting, also add Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) and Gan Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum). For body itching, add Guang Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 3 fen. When scabbing should occur but does not, increase the amount of Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng). For constipation, add Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 3 fen. For thirst, it indicates heat; add Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 2 qian, Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae) 1 qian. For loss of voice, add Shi Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) 3 fen, Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi) 1 qian. If pustules enter the eyes causing opacity, add Chan Tui (Periostracum Cicadae) 5 fen. If seven pieces of Chan Tui (Periostracum Cicadae) are added to the initial eruption formula from the beginning, the eyes will be free of pustules. To prevent pustules from forming in the throat, using Jie Geng (Radix Platycodi) 1 qian in the initial formula renders such symptoms harmless. With these three formulas for pediatric smallpox/rubella, there is no death; if one can apply them with divine flexibility, one can be called a divine physician. Even severe/deformed cases treated with these formulas will all recover. In summary, for children, tonification is preferred over dispersal; this single phrase summarizes it all.
Rubella is a heat syndrome; Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) and Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) should not be used. One should employ blood-nourishing methods rather than blood-dispersing methods. These points must be firmly remembered.
The formula uses Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 2 qian, Xuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae) 3 qian, Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) 3 fen, Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 3 fen, Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take. This is a miraculous formula for treating rubella. Using this miraculous formula as the skeletal framework, modifications can be made according to circumstances. If Heart Fire is extreme, add Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 3 fen; for Liver Fire, add Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae) 6 fen; for Lung Fire, add Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae) 1 qian, Mai Dong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 1 qian.
To differentiate diseases of the various meridians, one should also observe the color of the child's Shan Gen (root of the nose). However, when observing, one must first wash away the dust on the face and examine carefully. The *Complete Book of Smallpox and Rubella* discusses various symptoms comprehensively, whereas I summarize the essentials to transmit formulas. With these four formulas as the skeletal framework, referencing that book and making additions/subtractions yields extremely miraculous results.
