On Treating Sores and Toxins
Discussing sores on the head and face, and sores on the body and limbs.
The Heavenly Master said: Clearly indicate the patient's symptoms without resorting to hidden treatments. For instance, toxic sores appearing on the hands or face, toxins condensing on the skin surface, or arising on the face or between the cheeks, are such cases. All sores should be eliminated according to the previously transmitted methods for treating sore toxins, but they must not be treated as severely as conditions like back carbuncles (Fabeijie) or lung abscesses (Feiyong). I now transmit another method that is as effective as a deity for treating minor sore toxins. The prescription uses Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) one liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) one liang, Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英) one liang, Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 生甘草) three qian, Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba, 荆芥) one qian, Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘) one qian. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Xiaoyong Tang / Eliminate Carbuncle Decoction.) One dose alleviates symptoms, two doses eliminate the toxin, and three doses result in recovery. This is an excellent method for early-stage treatment (Mingzhi), which people should know and not neglect. The head area most strictly prohibits the use of ascending herbs; remember this well. Diseases of the lower body benefit from ascending herbs, whereas diseases of the head do not. Head diseases are best treated with herbs that descend fire.
Master Zhang said: I cannot add a single word.
Master Hua said: I have two additional prescriptions. One for sores on the head and face uses Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) two liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) one liang, Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎) five qian, Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英) three qian, Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 生甘草) five qian, Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 桔梗) three qian, Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩) one qian. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Shang Xiaoyongchuang San / Upper Eliminate Carbuncle Sores Powder.) One dose alleviates symptoms, two doses completely eliminate them, and a third dose is unnecessary. Another prescription treats sores and ulcers on the body and limbs with miraculous effect. It uses Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 金银花) three liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) one liang, Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 生甘草) three qian, Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba, 蒲公英) three qian, Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, 牛蒡子) two qian, Fu Rong Ye (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium, 芙蓉叶) seven leaves (if no leaves are available, use stems, three qian), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 天花粉) five qian. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Xiaoyong Wanquan Tang / Eliminate Carbuncle Perfect Safety Decoction.) One dose causes immediate elimination, two doses lead to full recovery; it is a miraculous prescription. It differs from Yuan Gong's prescription, though the reason is unknown. The Heavenly Master said: Both prescriptions are miraculous; transmit both.
On Long-term Treatment of Deficiency-Cold
The Heavenly Master said: Long-term treatment refers to continuous therapy over a long period and many years. This applies to patients with cold-deficiency constitutions. Medication such as Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参), Fu Ling (Poria, 茯苓), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术), etc., must not be interrupted daily. They must be decocted and drunk daily to achieve improvement; otherwise, dizziness (Hunxuan) and palpitations (Zhengchong) will occur. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 人参) one qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) two qian, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 黄芪) two qian, Fu Ling (Poria, 茯苓) two qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) five fen, Bai Jie Zi (Brassicae Semens, 白芥子) one qian, Shen Qu (Massa Medicateda, 神曲) five fen, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 肉桂) one fen, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦冬) two qian, Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 北五味子) three fen, Su Zi (Perillae Fructus, 苏子) five fen. Decoct in water and take orally. (Annotation: Jiudao Tang / Long-Dao Decoction.) If the mind is restless, add Sheng Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 生枣仁) one qian; if insomnia occurs, add Shu Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, 熟枣仁) one qian and Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, 远志) one qian; if bloating and fullness occur, add Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 白芍) two qian; if thirst occurs, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归) two qian and Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地) three qian; if nocturnal emission occurs, add Qian Shi (Euryales Semen, 芡实) three qian and Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 山药) three qian; if appetite is poor, add Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, 麦芽) one qian and Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus, 山楂) three to four grains; if phlegm is present, add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, 半夏) five fen; if cough occurs, add Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 桔梗) one qian; if floating fire (deficient fire) is present, add Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 元参) two qian; if headache occurs, add Man Jing Zi (Vittariae Spicae, 蔓荆子) seven fen, or Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎) one qian; if external contraction exists, add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡) one qian; if nasal congestion occurs, add Su Ye (Perillae Folium, 苏叶) one qian; if eye pain occurs, add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡) one qian; if slight heart pain occurs, add Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 桅子) five fen; if hypochondriac pain occurs, add Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, 芍药) one qian; if abdominal pain occurs, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 肉桂) three fen. This is the method for long-term treatment.
Master Zhang said: Extremely wonderful.
