(Continuing from the previous text) This formula is derived from Guben Wan (Solidify the Root Pill) by removing Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), and adding Mahuang Gen (Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 qian), Gancao Shao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma with tips, raw) (0.5 qian), Danggui Shao (Angelicae Sinensis Radix with tips) (0.5 qian), and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) (7 pieces).
Treating illness caused by Yin Fire:
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), bitter and cold in nature. Remove the bark, stir-fry with salt and wine until brown.
Grind the above single herb into a fine powder, and make pills with water, sized like wu-tzu seeds (Cocculus Indicus seeds). For blood deficiency, take with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction); for qi deficiency, take with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction).
Commentary: Zhu Danxi stated that Huangbai enters the extreme yin levels and has the effects of purging fire and nourishing yin; it should only be used for fire within yin. There are two types of fire: Junhuo (Monarch Fire), which is human fire, specifically Heart Fire.
(The original text contains fragments or layout errors here, implying: One should use Huangbai...)
Use Huangbai (1 jin), divide into four parts, soak, wash, sun-dry, and stir-fry using pure wine, honey water, salt water, and child's urine. Grind into powder. Use Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (1 jin), remove hairs, cut, crush, and dry over heat. Make into pills. Take 70 pills each time with plain boiled water. Treat conditions such as excess above and deficiency below, imbalance of water and fire, and Xiao Zhong (Wasting and Thirsting syndrome). Ancient texts state that Zhimu assists Huangbai to nourish yin and descend fire, embodying the principle of Metal and Water generating each other. Without Zhimu, Huangbai is like a jellyfish without shrimp. Generally, Huangbai can restrain fire within yin in the Bladder and Mingmen (Gate of Life), while Zhimu clears Lung Metal and nourishes the source of Kidney Water. Li Dongyuan and Zhu Danxi both considered this combination an essential medicine for nourishing yin and descending fire, a concept not mentioned in ancient medical books.
Use Huangbai and Zhimu (each 1 liang), wash with wine, bake until dry, and grind. Add Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (1 qian) as a guiding agent. Make pills with warm water, sized like Qianshi (Euryales Semen). Take 100 pills each time with boiling water. Treat heat in the Blood level, characterized by no thirst but difficulty in urination, or symptoms such as heat in the feet due to Kidney deficiency, weakness in the legs and knees. The *Neijing* states: "For heat, use cold"; "The Kidney dislikes dryness; urgently eat pungent substances to moisten it." Use Huangbai's bitter-cold nature to purge heat, replenish water, and moisten dryness as the Sovereign drug; use Zhimu's bitter-cold nature to purge Kidney fire as the Assistant drug; use Rougui's pungent-hot nature as the Envoy drug. This is the method of "using cold because of heat" (Han Yin Re Yong).
Use Huangbai and Chao Zhen Gafen (Calcined True Clam Powder) (each 1 jin), grind into powder. Take 100 pills each time on an empty stomach with decoction or wine. Treat red and white turbidity, sexual indulgence, nocturnal emission, and spermatorrhea. Another prescription adds Chao Muli (Ostreae Concha) and Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), stir-fried and divided equally into powder, made into pills with paste, sized like wu-tzu seeds. Take 80 pills each time with salt water.
This is Dabu Wan (Great Tonifying Pill) by Zhu Danxi, added with Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) soaked in rice bran water for seven days. Divide equally into powder, take 3 qian on an empty stomach with wine. Treat damp-heat causing pain in the waist and knees.
Use Huangbai, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), all soaked in wine, decoct with water and drink. Treat Fire in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), manifesting as dry throat, red and scanty urine, and constipation.
