[Lead Carbonate (Qian Dan)]
Pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. It primarily treats stomach qi rebelling upward causing vomiting and regurgitation, as well as convulsions and epilepsy. It clears heat and directs qi downward. Through refining and smelting, it can be restored to pure lead (Jiuguang refers to extremely pure lead). Long-term consumption facilitates the illumination of the mind and spirit. It is found in plains and marshes. (Currently known as Huangdan or Minium)
A blue-green metal, astringent in nature with solidifying properties, an excellent material for smelting. When its form is separated and points are added to vinegar, it returns to its original substance and takes on the color of green onions. It subdues the toxicity of arsenic frost; mercury in a cauldron is sealed with mud. Through the selection of salt and cinnabar, the primal fluid merges and blends harmoniously.
The *Shuowen Jiezi* states: Lead is a blue-green metal. Wang Haogu said: Astringency can remove slippage and consolidate qi. Kou Zongshi said: Qian Dan is formed by transforming lead. The *Book of Rites* mentions: The son of a skilled metallurgist [understands the craft].
The *Danfang Jianyuan* records the method for stir-frying Qian Dan: Use earth sulfur and saltpeter, melt lead into liquid, and drip vinegar into it. Wait until it becomes powder, then it forms Dan. To transform Dan back into lead, mix Qian Dan with juice from white scallion bulbs to form a golden liquid; pouring it out yields lead again. Ri Huaizi stated: Qian Dan subdues arsenic. Tao Hongjing stated: It is required for coating炼丹 furnaces. Li Shizhen stated: Whenever using Qian Dan, one must rinse away saltpeter and salt, and winnow away sand and stones. When the primal fluid is just melting...
[Powdered Tin / Powdered Lead (Fen Xi)]
Pungent in taste, cold in nature. It treats latent corpse-poison (severe toxic conditions), insect and snake bites, and kills three types of parasites (San Chong). Also known as Jie Xi. Tin mirror handles treat amenorrhea (blood obstruction) in women, abdominal masses (Zhengjia) lurking in the intestines causing infertility. It is found in mountain valleys.
Lead possesses a silver luster, generating fragrant powders. Suspended in wine lees jars for steaming, tightly fanned in wind furnaces. Cracked noses transmit essence, illuminating the heart and opening hidden wisdom. It can be a thief or a medium, serving as a remedy and standard.
The *Shuowen Jiezi Zhu* notes: Silver-colored but with a lead texture. Yu Xin's poem: "Mixed powder generates fragrance." *Guanghai Yuheng Zhi* records: Placing black lead in wine lees jars to incubate and transform it, called Guifen. Li Shizhen stated: Lead and tin belong to the same category. Melt sheets of lead, place them inside a water steamer, seal firmly with salt mud, and nurture with fire in a wind furnace to form powder. Jiang Zhi's Fu mentions: The fragrance that cracks the nose. *Zihua Zi* states: The essence of the Lung opens upwards through the nose. Ancient mirror inscriptions: "Illuminating the heart and gallbladder preserves for a thousand springs." Yuan Dynasty lyrics: "Opening the outline and hidden wisdom." *Tuxu Zhinan* states: Among the five metals, only tin is easy to manipulate. Losing its medicinal property makes it a thief; gaining its medicinal property makes it a medium. Emperor Jianwen of Liang discussed: The efficacy of treating headaches. Pei Du's letters: Having standards for judgment.
