After birth, within or beyond one month, the infant presents with redness and dryness of both eyes, difficulty in opening them due to swelling and ulceration. Apply crushed earthworm mud (Lumbricus terrestris) to the fontanelle; replace when dry. It will heal within no more than three applications. Alternatively, equal parts of Rhizoma Arisaematis Exsiccatum (Sheng Nanxing) and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Sheng Dahuang) are ground into powder, mixed with vinegar, and applied to the soles of the feet, which is also effective.
Saliva flowing from the corners of the mouth and stagnating in the submental area is termed "Zhi Yi" (Stagnant Saliva). This is caused by cold spleen leading to excessive saliva, where spleen deficiency fails to control the fluids. The body fluids transform into saliva; when severe, it overflows and stagnates in the submental area, appearing reddish. The appropriate formula includes Bai Zhu (Stir-fried with soil until charred), Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Qing Pi (Unripe Citrus Peel), and Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger), each 0.5 fen; Ban Xia (Processed Pinellia), Ding Xiang (Clove), and Mu Xiang (Costus Root), each 1 qian. These are ground into powder, formed into pills the size of millet seeds using wheat paste. A one-year-old infant takes ten pills, washed down with rice soup. There are also cases caused by spleen heat, for which the appropriate formula includes Bai Zhu (Honey-fried), Hua Shi (Talcum Powder, prepared by water levigation), each 0.5 fen; Chao Bai Bian Dou (Stir-fried White Hyacinth Bean), Fu Ling (Poria), and Shi Hu (Dendrobium Stem), each 0.3 fen; Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) 0.3 fen; Ge Gen (Kudzu Root) 0.75 fen; and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 0.1 fen. These are ground into powder and taken with a decoction of Jixin (Centipeda Herba), 1 qian per dose.
After birth, the infant develops erysipelas characterized by diffuse redness and swelling that migrates unpredictably. This results from the pregnant mother consuming hot-natured foods, causing blood heat to transmit to the fetus, with toxins accumulating in the couli (interstices); or from wrapping the infant immediately in clothes that have been heated by sun or fire, causing the tender skin to be affected by heat toxins. The best treatment is to prick around the perimeter of the redness with a fine needle to release bad blood. Subsequently, apply juice extracted from the root of Musa basjoo (Bajiao Gen). In winter, if cold is feared, warm the juice by heating it in water. Alternatively, apply juice from larvae of *Otiorhynchus sulcatus* (Qicao Chong), or apply mashed small shrimp from ditches. If topical cooling agents are ineffective, apply powder of Fulonggan (Caoshixin / Hearth Soil) mixed with egg white. If the infant suffers from high fever and restlessness throughout the body, use Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), each 1 qian; Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn, powdered), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root), each 0.5 fen; Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), stir-fried lightly, 4 qian. Decoct in water and administer frequently in small doses until cured. If suffering from Dan Liu (erysipelas tumor), use five seeds of Ricinus communis (Bimazi, shelled), ground into powder, mixed with one spoonful of flour, and applied after mixing with water.
