The infant's chest and abdomen are shiny, with a color like crystal, making the internal organs clearly visible; this condition is named *Xia Ma Wen* (Toad Plague, a critical pediatric disease characterized by translucent skin and visible organ outlines). Use six large toads (*Bufo bufo gargarizans*), tie their four legs, place the toad's belly against the crystal-shiny area of the infant's chest and abdomen, and gently massage it several times. Then place it on the infant's umbilicus. Repeat with a second toad using the same method, changing a total of six toads, and the illness will heal spontaneously. (Note: Toads may spray secretion from their eyes into people's eyes; cover their eyes with silk cloth during treatment, and release them after use.)
When an infant is first born, if the whole body is golden yellow, this is due to heat pathogen transmitted from the mother to the fetus. If accompanied by fever, constipation, closed mouth refusing to suckle, and incessant crying, use *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Tian Hua Fen* (Trichosanthis Radix), *Bai Shao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and *Chuan Xiong* (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), each one qian. Decoct in water for both mother and infant to take together. (Another prescription excludes *Bai Shao*, *Chuan Xiong*, and *Dang Gui*, but includes *Yin Chen* (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba).)
Within the first month after birth, if the infant's whole body is red and the skin looks like it is coated with cinnabar, this is due to intense internal heat toxin. Internally administer *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Tian Hua Fen* (Trichosanthis Radix), *Lian Qiao* (Forsythiae Fructus, heart removed), and *Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each one qian. Externally apply juice extracted from crushed *Lan Ye* (Isatidis Folium) and *Fu Ping* (Lemnae Herba), mixed with *Pu Xiao* (Natrii Sulfas, earth-fried and ground), and apply to the affected area.
If the infant's complexion is white or bluish upon birth, this is due to cold pathogen received in the womb. After birth, exposure to wind pathogen causes cold extremities, dark green-black stools, and abdominal pain resembling intestinal coiling. Use equal parts of *Dang Gui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix, honey-fried - *Note: Text says 'Huang' likely referring to Huang Qin or similar, context implies warming/tonifying but paired with cold herbs, assuming Huang Qin based on common formulas or potentially Huang Qi, but strictly translating 'Huang' as generic Huang herb or specific depending on context. Given 'Mi Zhi' (honey fried), often used for Huang Qi or Huang Lian/Huang Qin. In pediatric cold cases, Huang Qi is possible, but Huang Qin is listed later. Let's stick to literal 'Huang' or assume Huang Qin/Huang Qi. Standard TCM texts often abbreviate. Given the cold nature, Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) might be intended for tonification, or Huang Lian for clearing. However, looking at the combination with Gui Xin and Xi Xin, it suggests a warming formula. Let's translate as 'Huang' (generic Huang herb) or specify based on common usage. Actually, 'Huang' alone usually refers to Huang Qin or Huang Lian in some contexts, but here with cold symptoms, it might be a typo for Huang Qi or just Huang Qin. I will translate as 'Huang' (Huang herb) to be safe, or check standard interpretations. In *Zhulin Nuke*, this formula likely uses Huang Qin or similar. Let's use 'Huang' (Huang herb) to remain faithful.*), *Xi Xin* (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), *Huang Qin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Long Gu* (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae, ground), *Gui Xin* (Cinnamomi Cortex), and *Bai Shao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba), all in equal proportions. Grind into powder, take one qian per dose, mix with milk to swallow, adjust dosage over three doses.
If the infant's gums rot, and if teeth have erupted at one or two years of age, leading even to tooth loss, this condition is named *Zou Ma* (Running Horse Gangrene, indicating rapid progression), caused by accumulation and knotting of heat toxin. This is a very ominous condition. Use concentrated decoction of *Lu Dou* (Vigna radiata Seed) taken frequently to allow the toxin to exit via urination. Externally, use *Ren Zhong Bai* (Urea Crystallisatum), *Tong Lv* (Viriditas Cupri, vinegar-processed), and *Xing Ren* (Pruni Semen), each two fen, and a small amount of *Bing Pian* (Borneolum Syntheticum). Grind into fine powder and apply to the affected area.
If the infant develops sores in the mouth and tongue, preventing suckling, use *Bai Fan* (Alumen, ground into powder), mix with egg white (*Ji Zi Qing*) and a little vinegar, stir evenly, and apply to the sole of the infant's foot. It will heal in two to seven days.
