(Attached: Asthma and Hoarseness)
The Classics state: "If one is injured by dampness in autumn, cough will inevitably occur in winter." It also states: "Diseases of the five zang organs and six fu organs can all cause cough; it is not solely due to the lungs." The skin and hair are the exterior correspondence of the lungs. When pathogenic factors first invade the skin and hair, they affect their corresponding interior organ (the lungs). If cough from the five zang organs persists for a long time, it may transmit to the six fu organs. Therefore, all types of cough result from the struggle between pathogenic factors and healthy qi. Generally, when pathogens are latent, qi movement is quiet; when pathogens move, qi rushes. Qi rebels upward into the throat and pharynx, failing to diffuse and unblock, resulting in cough. In severe cases, it causes extreme restlessness and suffocation, all caused by pathogenic factors. At the beginning of contracting the disease, dispersing pathogens must be the priority. If it evolves into various types of cough, there are ten kinds: Wind Cough, Cold Cough, Branch Cough, Liver Cough, Heart Cough, Spleen Cough, Lung Cough, Kidney Cough, Gallbladder Cough, and Jueyin Cough. There are also six types of coughs: Wind, Heat, Fire, Dryness, Cold, and Dampness. "Cough" refers to sound without phlegm, indicating lung qi injury and lack of clarity. "Su" (cough with phlegm) refers to phlegm without sound, caused by spleen dampness disturbance. "Ke Sou" (cough with both sound and phlegm) occurs due to lung injury and dampness activation, where cough triggers su. Furthermore, cough has three etiological categories: those caused by wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness, and fire belong to external causes; those caused by joy, anger, worry, overthinking, grief, fear, and shock belong to internal causes. For instance, cough accompanied by alternating chills and fever, pulling pain in the waist and back, chest fullness pressing on the heart, pain, and loss of appetite, belongs to neither-internal-nor-external causes, such as damage to the spleen from hunger or overeating, damage to the liver from labor, damage to the kidneys from sexual excess, or damage to the lungs from shouting. Dry cough, characterized by frequent sounds but no phlegm, is caused by yin deficiency with flourishing fire and fire stagnation. It gradually progresses to afternoon chills and fever, night sweats, and hemoptysis, often becoming a chronic deficiency syndrome. Alternatively, prolonged cough may consume body fluids, or produce turbid saliva and froth, purulent bloody sputum with foul odor, and dull chest pain, leading to Lung Wei (Lung Flaccidity) or Lung Yong (Lung Abscess). Regarding pulse diagnosis: Floating pulse indicates wind, Tight pulse indicates cold, Rapid pulse indicates heat, Fine pulse indicates dampness, Floating-Tight pulse indicates deficiency-cold, Deep-Rapid pulse indicates excess-heat, Wiry-Choppy pulse indicates insufficiency, and Surging-Slippery pulse indicates excessive phlegm. Treatment methods: For initial contraction of wind-cold, disperse wind-cold from the lung meridian; for internal lung fire, clear and descend it, necessarily combining methods to resolve phlegm, regulate qi, stop cough, and relieve chest fullness.
Main Formula: Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (each 1.5 qian); Fuling (Poria), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Sangpi (Mori Cortex), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zisu (Perillae Folium) (each 1 qian); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 qian).
