报痘之时，如痘不出不长，恐有痘疔（遍身细照看，独大色黑者是疔。贯浆之时，留滞不行
，）须防贼痘（大而黄色者是。）二者皆以银簪挑破，口含清水，吸去秽血，珍珠研末，头发烧
灰，蜡胭脂调匀，填入破处。无脂，干掺或后灸法亦可。
患痘疹，房室、门窗密闭，小孔亦遮蔽之。凡看时用草红纸，或用方高，烘燥捻条如小指，
蘸油灯上烘干，勿令油滴儿身。点火照头、面、眼、鼻、口、耳及遍身皮肤之内，细加认辨，
晓然明白。屡有看痘者，要抱儿房外，就天日光，触冒风寒，痘疹由此隐没，为害多矣！惟知痘之有变证，岂知
看误之过。若看妇人之痘，额可验胸；鼻可验腹；两颧，臂；两腮验腿。徐体之皆应。
儿出痘疹之时，必服发表疏散之药。腠理开豁，风寒易侵，及饮食起居，百凡严禁。天寒，
被褥宜浓，乳母当赤身伴卧，不宜烈火烘蒸。如过天暖，被褥不宜太浓，恐反助火毒。如此则重
痘可生，否则轻痘变重，悔恨何及。
盖小儿都不肯服药，病值猖獗，非药不痊，强之益增惊恐。无法与服，切勿惜药，但须大剂
浓煎，头汁儿多寡服之。余药及渣再煎汁，小儿吮乳时，乳母服之。如大剂药，于儿前煎熏有效。
三豆汤 治痘蕴热烦躁。
以下十方可预服，或天行时即服。
赤小豆（出广东） 黑豆（即马料豆） 绿豆
加甘草煎熟，令儿饮汁食豆。
四脱丹 蝉蜕（去土） 凤凰蜕（即抱出鸡子壳） 神仙脱（即父母爪甲，火炙） 蛇蜕（火焙）
上四味各为细末，等分，每服一钱。炼蜜为丸如绿豆大，每年除夜甘草汤服，三年痘毒消。
玄菟丹 玄参（去芦，木杵，石臼捣，晒燥，研细末。四两） 菟丝子（绢袋，水淘净，
好酒浸二日，煮丝出，捣、捏饼，晒、研，八两） 二味俱勿犯铁器。黑砂糖和丸如弹子大，每
日服三丸，砂糖汤化下，无时。
朱砂丹 朱砂（大块如墙壁，鲜红光明似云母色者。细研、水飞，澄去水，晒、研万下。
五钱） 牛黄（陕西，千层者。二分，匀） 每服五分，蜜调服。痘将发时，用猪粪调水，滤清
汁调朱砂服，大解痘毒。
甘草散 预服消毒，痘出不太盛。
大甘草（炙） 为末，每日食后白汤调下五分。人中黄尤佳。
生油剂 治小儿脏腑伏热，未成痘疹，四肢、头额微热。用生油一小盏，旋入铁铫内，
用温水一小盏倾和入，以杖搅之，煎令水尽，更令搅匀，如蜜则止。夜卧时，百日至三岁，每服
一蚬壳；五、七岁三蚬壳；八岁至十五岁半合；大人一合，量增减。服后良久令卧，少时大小便
通利，热毒退，痘疹不生。
苦楝子汤 取楝树子煎汤浴儿，痘疹不出，出亦稀少。
麻油擦法 痘发时，每夜临卧用手中三指蘸麻油，擦儿头至足遍身，然后睡，即可以使轻
。此亦畅达流通，升脱凝滞之义也。
稀痘饮 （天行将发痘时预服）
山楂 紫草 牛蒡子（各一钱） 防风 荆芥（各一钱二分） 甘草（五分）
生姜一片，水一钟，煎服。
琐琐葡萄（出回回国。进贡年陕西、北京皆有。）小儿食之，稀痘。
升麻葛根汤 治初热壮盛，疑似难明，服之。末见痘，表热甚者。
升麻（一钱） 葛根（二钱） 甘草（一钱） 白芍药（一钱） 加姜、葱煎服。
或加紫苏、山楂、牛蒡子、笋尖（各一钱，）冬加麻黄（一钱。）
消毒饮 （治痘已出，上焦壅热，胸膈不快。）
荆芥（二钱） 牛蒡子（二钱） 甘草（一钱） 姜（二片） 水煎服。
清肺饮 咽干声哑。
麻黄（一钱二分） 麦门冬（一钱五分） 知母 天花粉 荆芥（各八分） 诃子（取肉）
菖蒲（各六分）
水煎，加竹沥小半钟，姜汁三匙，服。
羌活散郁汤 治实热痘初发，身热壮盛，腮红面赤，毛焦躁乱，咳嗽喘急，实热等证。
防风 羌活 白芷 荆芥 桔梗 地骨皮 川芎 连翘 牛蒡子 紫草 大腹皮 甘草（等
分）
上为粗末，每五钱加灯心十四枝，水煎服。
热郁难发加升麻。渴加葛根、天粉。腹胀鼻塞，面赤若怒，毛直枯加麻黄。大便秘加枳壳、
当归。甚不通加大黄。呕吐加陈皮、猪苓、泽泻。（禁用生姜、半夏、丁香、木香。）洞泄加升麻（禁
用白术、茯苓、肉果。）咳嗽恶
风加紫苏、桑皮。失血加犀角、地黄、黄连。发斑加黄连、黄芩、山栀。小便赤加滑石、栀子、
地黄、芍药。鼻衄加犀角、黄芩。惊悸加木通、山栀。搐加青皮。不食加山楂、麦芽、神曲。出
不快加牛蒡、山楂、蝉蜕。痘红赤色加生地、红花、丹皮。热壮甚加葛根、前胡。见点三日内根据
方加减；三日后另有方。
退火回生汤 （热极枯涩）
滑石 辰砂（各一钱） 冰片（三厘）
研匀，每一分温水调服。
四顺清凉饮 （壮热便闭）
当归 芍药 甘草 大黄（等分） 水煎服。
冰肌散 治痘一齐涌出，一服略敛。热极者用，热轻者戒之。
柴胡 前胡 黄芩 栀子 连翘 泽泻 黄连 黄柏 犀角 地骨皮 牡丹皮 为粗末，每
三钱，水煎服。
保元汤 （即参 饮） 治元气虚弱，精神倦怠，肌肉柔慢，饮食少进，面青 白，睡
卧宁静，痘顶不起，浆不足及有杂证，皆属虚弱，宜服。（血热、毒壅、火证禁用。）
人参（一钱） 黄 （二钱） 甘草（五分，前生用，后炙用） 桂（二分，虚寒加用）
上加生姜一片，水煎服。
初起的属虚寒，本方加川芎、桔梗。起胀便兼服。浆足后助收敛，方可加白术、茯苓、白芍
之类。出不快加川芎、官桂。禁蝉蜕、牛蒡、人牙。小便赤加木通、腹皮、茯苓。禁车前、滑石、
山栀。泄泻
加白术、茯苓、木香、肉果。禁猪苓、诃子、龙骨、石脂。大便秘加当归。禁大黄、枳壳、生地
。呕吐加橘皮、干姜、丁香。禁半夏。痰，贝母、杏仁。减食加白术、人参、神曲。禁山楂、砂
仁。伤食加山楂、神曲、麦芽。禁枳实、三棱、蓬术。烦渴加麦冬、五味子。禁加山楂、砂仁。
风则微散，加紫苏、防风、枳壳。喘急，三、四日前加桔梗、杏仁、蝉蜕。有虚证见者，决非实喘
，乃毒不得外达，上乘于肺。禁麻黄、萝卜子，枳壳诸下气药。喘嗽加麦冬、杏仁、五味。禁天
粉、桑皮，六、七日间曾经泄泻，后气喘，乃短气虚极，加人参则喘自止。腹胀加腹皮、浓朴。
可兼发散。有伤生冷，寒气郁遏，从内伤、外感治。内伤用丁香、肉桂、神曲、木香。外感用防
风等药。四、五日手足厥冷加丁香、肉桂、川芎，倍用黄 。夏月去丁香。四肢不起加防风，减
川芎。浆不足加白术、当归、川芎。发痒加川芎、当归、白芍、白术、茯苓。禁僵蚕、蒺藜。痒
甚，烧茵陈熏。禁沐浴发散。
异攻散 治痘表虚痒塌，里虚泄泻，腹胀喘嗽，闷乱烦渴，寒战切牙，头温足冷。凡曾经
泄泻后见证，皆属虚寒，宜急服之。有始初血热毒火证，过服凉药变虚寒者亦服。
木香 官桂 当归 人参 茯苓 陈皮 浓朴 丁香 肉果（各七分） 附子（寒甚者加）
半夏（各五分）
上为粗末，每服五钱。生姜三片、枣二枚，水一大钟，煎至六分服。
木香散 治痘表虚灰白，内虚泄泻，腹胀，其效如神。（如无灰白，泄泻等证，勿服。）
木香 人参 肉桂 赤茯苓 大腹皮 青皮 前胡 诃子（取肉） 半夏 丁香 甘草（各

每服五钱，生姜三片，水一大钟，煎六分温服。
四君子汤 （补元气，养脾胃）
人参 白术 茯苓 甘草 姜、枣煎服。
四物汤 （养血水方，配四君子名八珍汤）
当归 白芍 川芎 熟地 七日后酒炒，水煎服。
十全大补汤 大补血气（痘顶平脚阔，浆不满足，即四君子、四物名八珍汤，更加黄 、
肉桂。）
化毒汤 治痘已出，清热凉血。（毒一解，不至黑陷；血一凉，不至红紫。）
紫草（无真者，不必用） 升麻 蝉蜕 地骨皮 黄芩（酒炒） 甘草 加木通等分，水煎
服。
十神解毒汤 治血热痘证，身如火烙，腮红脸赤，毛焦色枯，已出未出。三日前痘点烦红，
燥渴多饮，睡卧不宁，小便赤涩者，此血热也。并宜服。
生地 红花 当归尾 桔梗 牡丹皮 赤芍药 木通 大腹皮 连翘 川芎（等分） 上加
灯心十枝，水煎服。
身热盛加葛根、前胡。毒盛绵密加荆芥、牛蒡。渴加天粉、竹叶、滑石。呕加橘皮。泻加猪
苓，泽泻、防风。大便闭加枳壳、前胡。喘加蒌仁。便黑加犀角、黄连或桃仁。小便短加木通、
泽泻，赤加栀子、滑石。发红斑加犀角、黄芩、黄连、山栀、玄参。烦渴狂乱、谵语加知母、石
膏、麦门冬、天粉。呕、泻加黄连、猪苓、泽泻。咽痛加甘草、牛蒡、荆芥。
痘证属血热者多，乃制前方。此证认明，只宜重用升提、发散，使毒得以达表而从外解；引
以渗泄，使热得以下行而从内消。佐以清凉解毒，行血凉血之剂。则虽稠密，亦能消散易，浆易
敛，此方之功也。用至痘顶白光，接用太乙保和汤，切勿误用补药、热药及兜塞药，则变危急不
救。
太乙保和汤 治血热痘，服十神解毒汤，热证悉去。三日之后，不易长大，用之成浆收靥
。
桔梗 川芎 山楂 木通 人参 红花 生地 糯米（五十粒） 灯心（七枝） 生姜（一
片） 水煎服。
起不快加牛蒡子。便涩腹胀加大腹皮。繁红不润加当归、蝉蜕。陷塌加黄 。痛加白芷。不
匀加防风。嗽、渴加麦门冬、五味。痒及水泡加白芷、白芍药。七、八日浆足，接用保婴百补汤
。
益元透肌汤 治实热痘。服羌活散郁汤后壅热悉开，三、四日后不肥大，用之成浆收靥。
即太乙保和汤去生地、红花，加蝉蜕、牛蒡、陈皮煎服，加减悉同。七、八日浆足，接服保婴百
补汤。
保婴百补汤 治实热血热痘。八、九日无他证，并以此方调理。盖痘证平顺者，不必药；
恶逆者，药无功。险证宜药。虚寒者少，二热证多，特另出此五方。此方后用。
当归 芍药 地黄 白术 人参 茯苓 山药 甘草（等分） 枣二枚，水煎服。
气虚加黄 、官桂。有别证，虚实加减。
加味四圣饮 治痘出不快，及变陷倒靥，小便赤，身热未退，或风吹复冒者。
紫草 黄 人参 川芎 蝉蜕 木通 木香 甘草
大便秘加枳壳。上加糯米百粒，水煎服。
活血解毒汤 （解余毒）
防风 荆芥 生地 赤芍 当归 连翘 黄连 牛蒡 紫草 白术 薄荷 川芎 木通 甘
草（等分）水煎服。
玄参升麻汤 （温毒发斑）
玄参 升麻 甘草（等分）水煎服。
大连翘饮 （痘后一切热毒痈肿）
连翘 防风 荆芥 牛蒡 当归 柴胡 黄芩 栀子 蝉蜕 赤芍 木通 玄参 滑石 甘
草（等分）上加姜一片，水煎服。
独圣散 （发痘） 穿山甲（炒，研极细末）
每服五分，儿大加服，酒浆调。
人牙散 （痘不起发） 老人牙（火 ，研极细末） 每服二厘，酒浆调下，勿多服。
参苏饮 （方见伤风） 犀角地黄汤（方见血门） 六一散（方见暑门） 白虎汤（方见
伤寒）
柴苓汤 即小柴胡汤（方见伤寒。）配四苓散（方见便癃） 甘桔汤（方见咽喉） 理
中汤（方见中寒） 真人活命饮（方见痈毒）
在出痘期间，如果痘疹不出或不长，恐怕是出现了痘疔（遍身仔细查看，发现个别特别大且颜色发黑的是疔。在贯浆阶段，若痘毒留滞不化，），同时也需防范贼痘（体积大且呈黄色的是贼痘）。这两种情况都要用银簪挑破患处，口中含清水，吸去污血，将珍珠研成粉末，头发烧成灰，与蜡胭脂调匀，填入破损处。如果没有油脂，直接干撒药粉或者采用后面的灸法也可以。
患痘疹时，居室和门窗要严密关闭，连小孔也要遮蔽起来。凡是诊察时要用草红纸，或者用方形高筒，烘干捻成条状如小指粗细，蘸油灯上烘干，不要让油滴到身上。点火照看头、面、眼、鼻、口、耳以及遍身皮肤内部，仔细辨认，使病情清楚明白。屡次有看痘的人，要在抱孩子的房外，借着天日光看，触冒风寒，导致痘疹隐没，危害极大！只知道痘疹有变证，哪里知道误诊的危害更大。如果是看妇女的痘疹，额头可以验证胸部；鼻子可以验证腹部；两颧对应手臂；两腮对应腿部。徐体之的说法都符合这一规律。
小儿出痘疹时，必须服用发表疏散的药物。腠理开豁，风寒容易侵入，饮食起居各方面都要严格禁止禁忌。天气寒冷，被褥应该厚实，乳母应当赤身陪伴孩子睡觉，不宜用烈火烘烤蒸腾。如果天气过暖，被褥不宜太厚，恐怕反而助长火毒。像这样重的痘疹可以存活，否则轻的痘疹会变重，后悔莫及。
大概小儿都不肯服药，病情正值猖獗，非药物不能痊愈，强行喂药只会增加惊恐。没有办法让孩子服下，千万不要吝惜药物，但必须用大剂量浓煎，第一煎让小儿根据多少服用。剩下的药渣再煎汁，小儿吮吸乳汁时，由乳母服用。如果是大剂量的药，可以在小儿面前煎煮熏蒸，也有效。
三豆汤：治疗痘蕴热烦躁。
以下十种方子可以预先服用，或者在天行时即服。
赤小豆（产自广东） 黑豆（即马料豆） 绿豆
加甘草煎熟，让孩子喝汁吃豆。
四脱丹：蝉蜕（去土） 凤凰蜕（即刚孵出的鸡蛋壳） 神仙脱（即父母的指甲，火炙） 蛇蜕（火焙）

痘证属血热者多，乃制前方。此证认明，只宜重用升提、发散，使毒得以达表而从外解；引以渗泄，使热得以下行而从内消。佐以清凉解毒，行血凉血之剂。则虽稠密，亦能消散易，浆易敛，此方之功也。用至痘顶白光，接用太乙保和汤，切勿误用补药、热药及兜塞药，则变危急不救。
太乙保和汤 治血热痘，服十神解毒汤，热证悉去。三日之后，不易长大，用之成浆收靥。
桔梗 川芎 山楂 木通 人参 红花 生地 糯米（五十粒） 灯心（七枝） 生姜（一片） 水煎服。
起不快加牛蒡子。便涩腹胀加大腹皮。繁红不润加当归、蝉蜕。陷塌加黄 。痛加白芷。不匀加防风。嗽、渴加麦门冬、五味。痒及水泡加白芷、白芍药。七、八日浆足，接用保婴百补汤。
益元透肌汤 治实热痘。服羌活散郁汤后壅热悉开，三、四日后不肥大，用之成浆收靥。
即太乙保和汤去生地、红花，加蝉蜕、牛蒡、陈皮煎服，加减悉同。七、八日浆足，接服保婴百补汤。
保婴百补汤 治实热血热痘。八、九日无他证，并以此方调理。盖痘证平顺者，不必药；恶逆者，药无功。险证宜药。虚寒者少，二热证多，特另出此五方。此方后用。

气虚加黄 、官桂。有别证，虚实加减。
加味四圣饮 治痘出不快，及变陷倒靥，小便赤，身热未退，或风吹复冒者。
紫草 黄 人参 川芎 蝉蜕 木通 木香 甘草
大便秘加枳壳。上加糯米百粒，水煎服。
活血解毒汤 （解余毒）
防风 荆芥 生地 赤芍 当归 连翘 黄连 牛蒡 紫草 白术 薄荷 川芎 木通 甘草（等分）水煎服。
玄参升麻汤 （温毒发斑）
玄参 升麻 甘草（等分）水煎服。
大连翘饮 （痘后一切热毒痈肿）
连翘 防风 荆芥 牛蒡 当归 柴胡 黄芩 栀子 蝉蜕 赤芍 木通 玄参 滑石 甘草（等分）上加姜一片，水煎服。
独圣散 （发痘） 穿山甲（炒，研极细末）
每服五分，儿大加服，酒浆调。
人牙散 （痘不起发） 老人牙（火 ，研极细末） 每服二厘，酒浆调下，勿多服。
参苏饮 （方见伤风） 犀角地黄汤（方见血门） 六一散（方见暑门） 白虎汤（方见伤寒）
柴苓汤 即小柴胡汤（方见伤寒。）配四苓散（方见便癃） 甘桔汤（方见咽喉） 理中汤（方见中寒） 真人活命饮（方见痈毒）
During the eruption of smallpox, if the pustules do not emerge or grow, one must fear the presence of *Ding* (a specific type of severe pustule; carefully examine the whole body, those that are exceptionally large and black are Ding). Also, guard against *Zei Dou* (盗贼痘 - "thief pox"; those that are large and yellow are Zei Dou). Both conditions should be punctured with a silver hairpin, rinse the mouth with clear water, and suck out the foul blood. Grind pearl powder, burn hair to ash, mix with wax red lacquer, and fill into the broken area. If no grease is available, dry application or the following moxibustion method may also be used.
When suffering from smallpox/rash, the room, doors, and windows must be tightly closed, even small holes should be covered. For examination, use grass-red paper, or a square high tube, dry it by heating and roll it into a strip the thickness of a little finger, dip in oil lamp to dry, ensuring no oil drips on the body. Light a fire to illuminate the head, face, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and the skin all over the body, examining carefully to make the condition clear. It has happened many times that doctors examining smallpox outside the room where the child is held, relying on daylight, exposed themselves to wind and cold, causing the smallpox to hide, which causes great harm! People only know that smallpox has complicated manifestations, but do not realize the greater harm caused by misdiagnosis. When examining women's smallpox, the forehead corresponds to the chest; the nose to the abdomen; the cheekbones to the arms; the cheeks to the legs. Xu Tizhi's observations all correspond to this.
When children erupt smallpox, they must take herbs for releasing the exterior and dispersing pathogens. The interstices (*Couli*) are open, making them susceptible to wind-cold invasion; diet and daily activities must be strictly regulated. In cold weather, bedding should be thick; the wet nurse should lie naked with the child, avoiding intense heat baking. If the weather is too warm, bedding should not be too thick, lest it aggravate fire-toxin. In this way, severe cases can survive; otherwise, mild cases become severe, leading to endless regret.
Generally, children refuse to take medicine. When the disease is rampant, only medicine can cure it; forcing it increases fear. If unable to administer directly, do not spare the medicine, but prepare a large dose, decocted strongly. Give the first decoction to the child according to their capacity. Decoct the remaining herbs and dregs again; when the child nurses, the wet nurse takes this decoction. For large doses, decocting near the child for fumigation can also be effective.
**Sandou Tang (Three Bean Decoction):** Treats internal heat and irritability due to smallpox.
The following ten formulas can be taken prophylactically, or immediately during epidemic outbreaks.
*Chi Xiaodou* (Red Adzuki Bean, produced in Guangdong) *Heidou* (Black Soybean, i.e., horse feed bean) *Lvdou* (Mung Bean)
Add *Gancao* (Licorice Root), decoct until cooked, let the child drink the juice and eat the beans.
**Situo Dan (Four Sheddings Pill):** *Chantui* (Cicada Slough, cleaned of soil) *Fenghuang Tui* (Phoenix Slough, i.e., shell of freshly hatched chicken egg) *Shenxian Tui* (Immortal Slough, i.e., parents' fingernails, fire-roasted) *Shetui* (Snake Slough, fire-baked)
Grind the above four ingredients into fine powder, equal parts. Take 1 qian per dose. Form pills like mung beans using refined honey. Take with Licorice decoction on New Year's Eve every year; after three years, smallpox toxin is eliminated.
**Xuantu Dan:** *Xuanshen* (Scrophularia Root, remove rhizome, pound with wooden pestle in stone mortar, dry in sun, grind to fine powder. 4 liang) *Tusizi* (Dodder Seed, wash clean in silk bag, soak in good wine for two days, boil until threads separate, pound, shape into cakes, dry, grind. 8 liang). Do not let these two touch iron vessels. Mix with dark brown sugar to form pills the size of a bullet. Take 3 pills daily, dissolved in brown sugar water, at any time.
**Zhusha Dan:** *Zhusha* (Cinnabar, large pieces like walls, bright red and lustrous like mica. Fine grind, wet-grind, settle water, dry, grind 10,000 times. 5 qian) *Niuhuang* (Calculus Bovis, from Shaanxi, layered ones. 2 fen, uniform). Take 5 fen per dose, mixed with honey. When smallpox is about to erupt, mix pig manure with water, filter the clear juice, mix with Cinnabar and take. This greatly resolves smallpox toxin.
**Gancao San (Licorice Powder):** Prophylactic detoxification, for mild eruptions.
Large *Gancao* (Licorice Root, roasted) grind to powder. Take 5 fen after meals with plain boiled water. *Renzhonghuang* (Human Waste Precipitate) is especially good.
**Shengyou Ji (Raw Oil Preparation):** Treats latent heat in the zang-fu of children, before smallpox rash forms, with slight heat in limbs, head, and forehead. Use a small cup of raw oil, pour into an iron pot, add a small cup of warm water, stir with a stick, boil until water evaporates, continue stirring until consistency like honey. At bedtime: infants 100 days to 3 years, 1 clam shell; 5-7 years, 3 clam shells; 8-15 years, half he; adults 1 he. Adjust dosage accordingly. Let the patient lie down for a long time after taking. Soon, urination and defecation will become smooth, heat-toxin recedes, and smallpox does not develop.
**Kulianzi Tang (Toosandy Bark Decoction):** Decoct Toosandy seeds for bathing the child. Used when smallpox does not erupt or erupts sparsely.
**Hemp Oil Rubbing Method:** When smallpox erupts, every night before bed, dip three fingers in hemp oil, rub the child's head to feet all over the body, then sleep. This lightens the condition. This follows the principle of promoting circulation and unblocking stagnation.
**Xidou Yin (Thinning Smallpox Drink):** (Take prophylactically when epidemic smallpox is about to erupt)
*Shanzha* (Hawthorn) *Zicao* (Arnebia Root) *Niubangzi* (Burdock Fruit) (each 1 qian) *Fangfeng* (Saposhnikovia Root) *Jingjie* (Schizonepeta Spike) (each 1.2 qian) *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (0.5 qian)
One slice of fresh ginger, one zhong of water, decoct and take.
*Suosuo Putao* (Raisins, from Huiguo [Central Asia]. Produced in Shaanxi and Beijing during tribute years.) Children eating this thins the smallpox.
**Shengma Gegen Tang (Ephedra and Kudzu Root Decoction):** Treats initial strong fever, ambiguous diagnosis. Take if no pustules seen yet, with strong exterior heat.
*Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (1 qian) *Gegen* (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (2 qian) *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (1 qian) *Baishao* (White Peony Root) (1 qian) Add ginger and scallion, decoct and take.
Alternatively add *Zisu* (Perilla Leaf), *Shanzha*, *Niubangzi*, *Sunjian* (Bamboo Shoot Tip) (each 1 qian); in winter add *Mahuang* (Ephedra Herba) (1 qian).
**Xiaodu Yin (Detoxifying Drink):** (Treats smallpox already erupted, with upper jiao congestion/heat, chest discomfort.)
*Jingjie* (1 qian) *Niubangzi* (2 qian) *Gancao* (1 qian) Ginger (2 slices) Decoct in water and take.
**Qingfei Yin (Clear Lung Drink):** Dry throat, hoarse voice.
*Mahuang* (1.2 qian) *Maimendong* (Ophiopogon Tuber) (1.5 qian) *Zhimu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) *Tianhuafen* (Trichosanthis Radix) *Jingjie* (each 0.8 qian) *Hezi* (Chebula Fruit, flesh only) *Changpu* (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (each 0.6 qian)
Decoct in water, add small amount of bamboo sap (half zhong), 3 spoons of ginger juice, take.
**Qianghuo San Yu Tang (Notopterygium Dispersing Depression Decoction):** Treats initial eruption of excess-heat smallpox, strong body heat, red cheeks and face, scorched hair, restlessness, cough, rapid breathing, and other excess-heat symptoms.

Coarsely grind. Take 5 qian per dose, add 14 stems of Jiedixin (Centipedes Grass), decoct in water and take.
If heat depression makes eruption difficult, add *Shengma*. If thirsty, add *Gegen* and *Tianhuafen*. If abdominal distension, nasal congestion, red angry face, straight/dry hair, add *Mahuang*. If severe constipation, add *Zhike* (Aurantii Fructus) and *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). If very blocked, add *Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). If vomiting, add *Chenpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), *Zhuling* (Polyporus), *Zexie* (Alismatis Rhizoma). (Contraindicate *Shengjiang*, *Banxia*, *Dingxiang*, *Muxiang*). If profuse diarrhea, add *Shengma* (Contraindicate *Baizhu*, *Fuling*, *Rougu*). If cough and aversion to wind, add *Zisu* and *Sangbai* (Mori Cortex). If bleeding, add *Xijiao* (Rhino Horn Substitute), *Dihuang* (Rehmanniae Radix), *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma). If macules appear, add *Huanglian*, *Huangqin* (Scutellariae Radix), *Shanzhi* (Gardeniae Fructus). If red urine, add *Huashi* (Talcum), *Zhizi*, *Dihuang*, *Shaoyao*. If epistaxis, add *Xijiao*, *Huangqin*. If palpitations/fright, add *Mutong* (Akebia Caulis), *Zhizi*. If convulsions, add *Qingpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride). If poor appetite, add *Shanzha*, *Maiya* (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), *Shenqu* (Medicated Leaven). If eruption slow, add *Niubangzi*, *Shanzha*, *Chantui*. If pustules red, add *Shengdi* (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), *Honghua* (Carthami Flos), *Danpi* (Moutan Cortex). If heat extreme, add *Gegen*, *Qianhu* (Peucedani Radix). Within 3 days of appearance, modify based on formula; after 3 days, use different formula.
**Tuohuo Huisheng Tang (Fire-Reducing Life-Restoring Decoction):** (Extreme heat, dryness/astringency)
*Huashi* (Talcum) *Chensha* (Cinnabar) (each 1 qian) *Bingpian* (Borneolum Syntheticum) (3 li)
Grind uniformly. Take 1 fen mixed with warm water.
**Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Shun Cooling Clearing Drink):** (High fever, constipation)
*Danggui* *Shaoyao* *Gancao* *Dahuang* (equal parts) Decoct in water and take.
**Bingji San (Ice-Skin Powder):** Treats sudden eruption of all pustules, slightly收敛 (contracts) after one dose. Use for extreme heat; avoid for mild heat.
*Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix) *Qianhu* *Huangqin* *Zhizi* *Lianqiao* *Zexie* *Huanglian* *Huangbo* (Phellodendri Cortex) *Xijiao* *Digupi* *Mudanpi* (Moutan Cortex) Coarsely grind. Take 3 qian, decoct in water and take.
**Baoyuan Tang (Preserve Origin Decoction) (i.e., Shen Yin):** Treats weak Yuan Qi, mental fatigue, flaccid muscles, poor appetite, blue-white complexion, quiet sleep, flat pustule tops, insufficient pus, and miscellaneous signs belonging to deficiency. Should take. (Contraindicated in blood-heat, toxin congestion, fire syndromes.)
*Renshen* (Ginseng Radix) (1 qian) *Huangqi* (Astragali Radix) (2 qian) *Gancao* (Licorice Root) (0.5 qian, raw initially, roasted later) *Guizhi* (Cinnamon Twig) (0.2 fen, add for deficiency-cold)
Add one slice of ginger, decoct in water and take.
For early stage deficiency-cold, add *Chuanxiong* and *Jiegeng*. Take concurrently during swelling phase. After sufficient pus, to aid contraction, may add *Baizhu*, *Fuling*, *Baishao*. If eruption slow, add *Chuanxiong*, *Guangui* (Cinnamon Bark). Contraindicate *Chantui*, *Niubangzi*, *Renya* (Human Tooth). If red urine, add *Mutong*, *Dafupi*, *Fuling*. Contraindicate *Cheqiancao*, *Huashi*, *Zhizi*. If diarrhea, add *Baizhu*, *Fuling*, *Muxiang*, *Rougu* (Myristica Seed). Contraindicate *Zhuling*, *Hezi*, *Longgu*, *Shizhi*. If constipation, add *Danggui*. Contraindicate *Dahuang*, *Zhike*, *Shengdi*. If vomiting, add *Jupi*, *Ganjiang*, *Dingxiang*. Contraindicate *Banxia*. For phlegm, *Beimu*, *Xingren*. For reduced food intake, add *Baizhu*, *Renshen*, *Shenqu*. Contraindicate *Shanzha*, *Sharen*. For food stagnation, add *Shanzha*, *Shenqu*, *Maiya*. Contraindicate *Zhishi*, *Sanleng*, *P engzhu*. For vexation/thirst, add *Maidong*, *Wuweizi*. Contraindicate adding *Shanzha*, *Sharen*. For wind, slight dispersion, add *Zisu*, *Fangfeng*, *Zhike*. For rapid breathing, 3-4 days prior, add *Jiegeng*, *Xingren*, *Chantui*. If deficiency signs appear, it is definitely not excess wheezing, but toxin failing to reach exterior, ascending to lung. Contraindicate *Mahuang*, *Luobozhong* (Radish Seed), *Zhike* and other qi-descending herbs. For wheezing/cough, add *Maidong*, *Xingren*, *Wuweizi*. Contraindicate *Tianhuafen*, *Sangbai*. If diarrhea occurred 6-7 days ago followed by wheezing, it is shortness of breath due to extreme deficiency; add *Renshen* and wheezing stops. For abdominal distension, add *Dafupi*, *Houpo*. Can combine with dispersing methods. For injury from cold/raw food, cold qi depression, treat as internal injury/exterior contraction. Internal injury uses *Dingxiang*, *Rougui*, *Shenqu*, *Muxiang*. Exterior contraction uses *Fangfeng* etc. If cold hands/feet on day 4-5, add *Dingxiang*, *Rougui*, *Chuanxiong*, double *Huangqi*. In summer remove *Dingxiang*. If limbs don't rise, add *Fangfeng*, reduce *Chuanxiong*. If insufficient pus, add *Baizhu*, *Danggui*, *Chuanxiong*. If itching, add *Chuanxiong*, *Danggui*, *Baishao*, *Baizhu*, *Fuling*. Contraindicate *Jiangcan*, *Jili*. If severe itching, burn *Yinchen* for fumigation. Contraindicate bathing/dispersing.
**Yigong San:** Treats exterior deficiency with itchy/flattened pustules, interior deficiency with diarrhea, abdominal distension, wheezing/cough, confusion/vexation/thirst, chattering teeth, warm head/cold feet. Any post-diarrhea signs belong to deficiency-cold, take urgently. Even if starting with blood-heat/toxin-fire, if over-cooling herbs turned it to deficiency-cold, also take.

Coarsely grind. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 3 slices ginger, 2 dates, one large zhong of water, decoct to 60%, take.
**Muxiang San:** Treats exterior deficiency with gray-white pustules, interior deficiency with diarrhea, abdominal distension. Effect miraculous. (If no gray-white or diarrhea signs, do not take.)
*Muxiang* *Renshen* *Rougui* *Chifuling* (Red Poria) *Dafupi* *Qingpi* *Qianhu* *Hezi* (Chebula Fruit, flesh) *Banxia* *Dingxiang* *Gancao* (equal parts)
Take 5 qian per dose, 3 slices ginger, one large zhong of water, decoct to 60%, take warm.
**Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction):** Tonifies Yuan Qi, nourishes spleen/stomach.
*Renshen* *Baizhu* *Fuling* *Gancao* Decoct with ginger and dates.
**Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction):** Nourishes blood/water. Combined with Sijunzi named Bazhen Tang.
*Danggui* *Baishao* *Chuanxiong* *Shudi* (Prepared Rehmannia Root) Stir-fry with wine after 7 days, decoct in water and take.
**Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction):** Greatly tonifies blood and qi. (Flat pustule tops, wide base, insufficient pus; i.e., Sijunzi + Siwu = Bazhen Tang, plus *Huangqi*, *Rougui*.)
**Huadu Tang:** Treats erupted smallpox, clears heat cools blood. (Once toxin resolved, no black sinking; once blood cooled, no red/purple discoloration.)
*Zicao* (If genuine unavailable, do not use) *Shengma* *Chantui* *Digupi* *Huangqin* (Stir-fried with wine) *Gancao* Add *Mutong* equal parts, decoct in water and take.
**Shishen Jiedu Tang (Ten-God Detoxifying Decoction):** Treats blood-heat smallpox syndrome, body hot as iron, red cheeks/face, scorched/dull hair, erupted or not. Three days prior, red spots, dry thirst, restless sleep, red/scanty urine, this is blood-heat. All should take.
*Shengdi* *Honghua* *Dangguiwei* (Tail of Angelica Root) *Jiegeng* *Mudanpi* *Chishaoyao* (Red Peony Root) *Mutong* *Dafupi* *Lianqiao* *Chuanxiong* (equal parts) Add 10 stems Jiedixin, decoct in water and take.
If strong body heat, add *Gegen*, *Qianhu*. If strong toxin dense, add *Jingjie*, *Niubangzi*. If thirsty, add *Tianhuafen*, *Zhuye* (Bamboo Leaf), *Huashi*. If vomiting, add *Jupi*. If diarrhea, add *Zhuling*, *Zexie*, *Fangfeng*. If constipation, add *Zhike*, *Qianhu*. If wheezing, add *Louren* (Trichosanthis Seed). If black stool, add *Xijiao*, *Huanglian* or *Taoren* (Peach Kernel). If scanty urine, add *Mutong*, *Zexie*; if red, add *Zhizi*, *Huashi*. If red macules, add *Xijiao*, *Huangqin*, *Huanglian*, *Zhizi*, *Xuanshen*. If vexation/thirst/madness/delirium, add *Zhimu*, *Shigao* (Gypsum Fibrosum), *Maimendong*, *Tianhuafen*. If vomiting/diarrhea, add *Huanglian*, *Zhuling*, *Zexie*. If sore throat, add *Gancao*, *Niubangzi*, *Jingjie*.
Most smallpox cases belong to blood-heat, hence this formula. Recognizing this syndrome, only use heavy lifting/dispersing agents to allow toxin to reach exterior and resolve externally; guide with draining agents to allow heat to descend and resolve internally. Assist with cooling/detoxifying, moving blood/cooling blood agents. Then even if dense, it dissipates easily, pus contracts easily. This is the merit of this formula. Use until pustule tops turn white, then switch to Taiyi Baohe Tang. Do not mistakenly use tonifying, heating, or astringent drugs, or it becomes critical and incurable.
**Taiyi Baohe Tang:** Treats blood-heat smallpox. After taking Shishen Jiedu Tang, heat signs gone. After 3 days, if not growing well, use this to form pus and crust.
*Jiegeng* *Chuanxiong* *Shanzha* *Mutong* *Renshen* *Honghua* *Shengdi* *Nuomi* (Glutinous Rice, 50 grains) *Jiedixin* (Centipedes Grass, 7 stems) *Shengjiang* (Fresh Ginger, 1 slice) Decoct in water and take.
If eruption slow, add *Niubangzi*. If urinary difficulty/abdominal distension, add *Dafupi*. If overly red/dull, add *Danggui*, *Chantui*. If sunken/flattened, add *Huangqi*. If painful, add *Baizhi*. If uneven, add *Fangfeng*. If cough/thirst, add *Maimendong*, *Wuweizi*. If itching/blisters, add *Baizhi*, *Baishao*. On day 7-8 when pus is full, switch to Baoying Baibu Tang.
**Yiyuan Touji Tang:** Treats excess-heat smallpox. After taking Qianghuo San Yu Tang, congestion opens. On day 3-4 if not plump, use this to form pus and crust.
Same as Taiyi Baohe Tang minus *Shengdi*, *Honghua*, add *Chantui*, *Niubangzi*, *Chenpi* decoct and take. Modifications same. On day 7-8 when pus is full, switch to Baoying Baibu Tang.
**Baoying Baibu Tang:** Treats excess-heat and blood-heat smallpox. Day 8-9 without other signs, regulate with this formula. Generally, smooth smallpox needs no medicine; malignant cases, medicine is useless. Dangerous cases need medicine. Deficiency-cold is rare, heat syndromes common. Specifically listed these five formulas for later use.

If qi deficiency, add *Huangqi*, *Guangui*. If other signs, modify for deficiency/excess.
**Jiawei Sisheng Yin (Modified Four Saints Drink):** Treats slow eruption, inverted/sunken crusts, red urine, lingering body heat, or relapse after wind exposure.

**Xuanshen Shengma Tang:** (Warm toxin causing macules)
*Xuanshen* *Shengma* *Gancao* (equal parts) Decoct in water and take.
**Da Lianqiao Yin (Great Forsythia Drink):** (All heat-toxin abscesses after smallpox)
*Lianqiao* *Fangfeng* *Jingjie* *Niubangzi* *Danggui* *Chaihu* *Huangqin* *Zhizi* *Chantui* *Chishaoyao* *Mutong* *Xuanshen* *Huashi* *Gancao* (equal parts) Add one slice ginger, decoct in water and take.
**Dusheng San (Single Saint Powder):** (Promotes eruption) *Chuanshanjia* (Pangolin Scale, fried, ground extremely fine)
Take 0.5 qian per dose, increase for older children, mixed with wine/gruel.
**Renya San (Human Tooth Powder):** (Smallpox fails to erupt) *Laoren Ya* (Old person's tooth, fire-roasted, ground extremely fine)
Take 2 li per dose, mixed with wine/gruel. Do not take excessively.
