The Classic says: All cases of neck stiffness belong to Dampness. Generally, neck stiffness where one cannot look back or turn the head is due to Wind-Damp pathogenic factors invading the Foot-Taiyang Meridian, or Phlegm-Heat lodging in the meridians. It may cause slight pain, with a rapid and excess pulse, more pronounced on the right hand. Treatment should focus on dispelling Wind and eliminating pathogens, promoting Qi circulation and relaxing sinews. If there is interference among Phlegm-Heat, Cold, and Dampness, treat according to the syndrome.

Pain in the whole body's joints varies greatly. There are cases of pain throughout the body due to Dampness stagnation; cases of body pain due to food retention; cases of pain due to Phlegm condensing in meridians forming lumps; cases of soreness and pain in various joints, either cold or hot; cases of pain due to damp-heat stagnation from excessive alcohol consumption. As for swelling and pain in the arms and neck, fever, vomiting, and inability to clear the Upper Jiao, these are all caused by daily accumulation leading to the generation of Phlegm, Saliva, and Fluids, which ascend with Qi. Floating and obstructing the Lung, causing cough with thick pus indicates Phlegm; accumulating in the Spleen, overflowing from the corners of the mouth uncontrollably indicates Saliva; stagnating in the Stomach, vomiting clear thin fluids indicates Fluids. The pulse for Fluids is often deep, soft, and wiry; the pulse for Phlegm is often floating, large, and slippery; the pulse for stagnation is often deep and hidden; the pulse for severe pain is deep and tight. Treatment should focus on dispersing stagnation, moving Qi, leaching out Dampness, dispelling Wind, clearing Phlegm, and eliminating Heat. After the pain subsides, tonify Qi and Blood.
