The ancient texts state: "Painlessness and loss of sensation are termed 'Ma Bi' (numbness and paralysis), which is the syndrome of numbness." It is further stated that: "Numbness (Ma) belongs to Qi deficiency, while woodiness/stiffness (Mu) belongs to dead blood (stasis)." This condition arises from a dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, with Wind-Cold-Dampness taking advantage of this weakness. When pathogenic factors penetrate deeply, the circulation of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi becomes sluggish, and the meridians are occasionally empty and sparse; thus, there is no pain. Because the skin lacks nourishment, there is a lack of sensation, resembling the feeling when ropes binding the body are first untied. Treatment should prioritize releasing the exterior through sweating, followed by tonification. Alternatively, phlegm stagnation in the four limbs or numbness in the fingers may present with a floating, choppy, and soggy pulse. One must guard against signs of stroke-like syndromes (Lei Zhong Feng) and intervene preemptively.
Main Formula: Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria) (each 8 fen); Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 fen). Add fresh ginger and jujube, decoct in water, and take orally.
Bu Qi Yang Rong Tang (Tonify Qi and Nourish Blood Decoction): Indicated for cases where Qi and Blood are deficient and pathogens invade; disperse pathogens first, then use this formula for tonification, simultaneously clearing damp-heat.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Tian Ma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) (all stir-fried with wine), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (equal parts). Decoct with ginger and jujube, and take orally.
Wen Jing Wan (Warm Meridians Pill): Treats generalized numbness.
Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (one piece, prepared, skin and umbilicus removed), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (stir-fried with wine, each 5 qian).
Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with wine, morning and evening.
Numbness and pain in the ten fingers: Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (1 qian), decoct, and mix with Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) powder (1 qian) to take. If phlegm is present, regularly take Tun Tan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill).
The Yellow Emperor asked: "Why does Jue syndrome manifest as cold or heat?" Qi Bo replied: "When Yang Qi declines at the lower part, it forms Cold Jue; when Yin Qi declines at the lower part, it forms Hot Jue." He further said: "Jue causes abdominal fullness, or sudden unconsciousness, or consciousness returning after half a day or a day. Why is this?" Qi Bo answered: "When Yin Qi is excessive in the upper part, the lower part becomes deficient, leading to abdominal fullness. When Yang Qi is excessive in the upper part, pathogenic Qi rebels and Yang Qi becomes chaotic, causing sudden unconsciousness. This is named Shi Jue (Corpse Jue). If Qi recovers, life is preserved; if not, death ensues. All these result from excessive depletion damaging Essence, causing daily decline of Yang Qi and dominance of Yin Qi alone. When pathogens affect the Three Yin meridians, it is Cold Jue: body cold, pulse deep, face pale, lips cyanotic, eyes rolling back, curled up posture. If sexual intercourse occurs after drunkenness or overeating, Yin Essence depletes daily while Yang Fire burns exclusively. When pathogens affect the Three Yang meridians, it is Hot Jue: body hot, pulse rapid, constipation, irritability, thirst, even fainting and collapsing. There are also cases of sudden cold extremities, coma, and delirious speech due to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, phlegm stagnation combined with violent anger, attending funerals in temples, walking at night in graveyards, or encountering so-called 'Flying Corpse Ghost Strikes' (sudden mysterious pathogenic factors). First, pinch the Renzhong point (GV26). Two people should lift the hair separately, facing the patient; blow Saponariae Fructus powder into the nose to induce sneezing; or needle into Renzhong (GV26) to the depth of the teeth, and moxa Guanyuan (CV4, 3 cun below the umbilicus) for 100 moxa cones. The treatment is complete when sweat appears on the tip of the nose and the patient regains consciousness. For women, moxa the area below the breast.
Main Formula (Yang Jue): Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 qian). Decoct in water, dissolve Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) (1 qian) into the liquid, and take hot. Alternatively, use Liu Yi San (Six-to-One Powder) (see Summerheat section) or Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) (see Cold Damage section).
Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang (Aconite and Magnolia Root Regulate the Middle Decoction) (Formula see Cold Damage section): Treats Yin Jue. For severe cold, heavily use Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex); for abdominal pain, add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus).
