(Sourced from *Suwen: Jin Gui Zhen Yan Lun*)
The Yellow Emperor asked, "Do the Five Zang Organs correspond to the Four Seasons, and does each have specific corresponding entities?" (The term "shou shou" refers to the principle that similar energies seek each other, with each having its own归属.) Qi Bo replied, "Yes."
In the East, the color is Azure (Qing), which internally connects to the Liver (Gan). The opening is in the eyes, and the essence is stored in the Liver. (The East is the direction where Wood energy prevails; the Liver is the organ belonging to Wood, hence they correspond. Azure is the color of Wood. The eyes are the orifice of the Liver. The essence of Wood, when stored in the Liver, is called Hun [Ethereal Soul].) Diseases arising from this sector often manifest as fright and terror, (Wind-Wood energy tends to cause trembling and movement, thus diseases present as fright and terror.) The flavor is Sour, the category belongs to Plants and Trees, (Sour is the flavor of Wood.) the domestic animal is the Chicken, (As stated in the *I Ching*: Xun represents the Chicken. The East is Wood, corresponding to the Chicken.) the grain is Wheat, (Wheat matures earliest, thus corresponding to the Spring Qi of the East. As stated in *Wu Chang Zheng Da Lun*: its animal is the Dog, its grain is Hemp.) it corresponds to the season of Spring, and above in the heavens it corresponds to the Year Star (Sui Xing), (The essence of Wood manifests above as the Year Star.) therefore, the Qi of Spring resides in the head, (Wood prospers in Spring, and Spring Qi ascends.) its musical note is Jue, (The sound of Wood is Jue, corresponding to Spring, its transformation relates to Heavenly Stems Ding/Ren and Earthly Branches Si/Hai.) its number is Eight, (According to Hetu numerology: Heaven generates Three for Wood, Earth completes it with Eight.) thus one knows that disease resides in the Sinews, (The Liver governs the Sinews.) its odor is Fishy/Musky (Sao). (Odor is the general name for smell. Sao is transformed by Wood Qi. *Li Ji Yue Ling* states its odor is Shan. Shan is similar to Sao. Odor, pronounced Xu Jiu or Chi Jiu. Sao, pronounced Sao.)
In the South, the color is Red, which internally connects to the Heart (Xin). The opening is in the ears, and the essence is stored in the Heart. (The South is the direction where Fire energy prevails; the Heart is the organ belonging to Fire, their energies connect. Red is the color of Fire. The ears are the orifice of the Heart. The essence of Fire, when stored in the Heart, is called Shen [Spirit]. As stated in *Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun*: the Heart opens into the tongue, the Kidney opens into the ears. This shows the tongue belongs to the Heart, while the ears involve both Heart and Kidney.) Therefore, heart disease affects the Five Zang Organs, (The Heart is the monarch of the Five Zang Organs; if the Heart is diseased, the other five organs respond.) The flavor is Bitter, the category belongs to Fire, (Bitter is the flavor of Fire.) the domestic animal is the Sheep, (As stated in *Wu Chang Zheng Da Lun* its animal is the Horse, but here it says Sheep, implying that Wu and Wei hours both belong to the South.) the grain is Millet (Shu), (Shu is red in color, specifically glutinous millet. As stated in *Wu Chang Zheng Da Lun* its grain is Wheat.) it corresponds to the season of Summer, and above in the heavens it corresponds to the Flaming Star (Ying Huo Xing), (The essence of Fire manifests above as the Flaming Star.) thus one knows that disease resides in the Blood Vessels, (The Heart governs the Blood Vessels.) its musical note is Zhi, (The sound of Fire is Zhi, corresponding to Summer, its transformation relates to Heavenly Stems Wu/Gui and Earthly Branches Zi/Wu.) its number is Seven, (Earth generates Two for Fire, Heaven completes it with Seven.) its odor is Scorched/Burnt. (Scorched odor is transformed by Fire Qi.)
In the Center, the color is Yellow, which internally connects to the Spleen (Pi). The opening is in the mouth, and the essence is stored in the Spleen. (Earth prospers across the four seasons, residing in the center; the Spleen is the organ belonging to Earth, their energies connect. Yellow is the color of Earth. The mouth is the orifice of the Spleen. The essence of Earth, when stored in the Spleen, is called Yi [Intention].) Therefore, spleen disease manifests at the root of the tongue, (The Spleen meridian connects to the root of the tongue and spreads under it.) The flavor is Sweet, the category belongs to Earth, (Sweet is the flavor of Earth.) the domestic animal is the Ox/Cow, (The Ox belongs to the Chou position and is yellow. *I Ching* states Kun represents the Ox.) the grain is Foxtail Millet (Ji), (Ji is millet. Non-glutinous is Ji, glutinous is Shu. Ji is the chief of the five grains, yellow in color and belonging to Earth.) it corresponds to the season of Late Summer, and above in the heavens it corresponds to the Stable Star (Zhen Xing), (The essence of Earth manifests above as the Stable Star.) thus one knows that disease resides in the Flesh/Muscles, (The Spleen governs the Muscles.) its musical note is Gong, (The sound of Earth is Gong, corresponding to Late Summer, its transformation relates to Heavenly Stems Jia/Ji and Earthly Branches Chou/Wei.) its number is Five, its odor is Fragrant. (Fragrance is transformed by Earth Qi.)
In the West, the color is White, which internally connects to the Lung (Fei). The opening is in the nose, and the essence is stored in the Lung. (The West is the direction where Metal energy prevails; the Lung is the organ belonging to Metal, their energies connect. White is the color of Metal. The nose is the orifice of the Lung. The essence of Metal, when stored in the Lung, is called Po [Corporeal Soul].) Therefore, lung disease manifests in the back, (The Lung is located in the chest, attached to the back.) The flavor is Pungent/Acrid, the category belongs to Metal, (Pungent is the flavor of Metal.) the domestic animal is the Horse, (The Lung corresponds to the Qian trigram image, *I Ching* states Qian represents the Horse.) the grain is Rice, (Rice is firm and white, thus belonging to Metal.) it corresponds to the season of Autumn, and above in the heavens it corresponds to the Great White Star (Tai Bai Xing), (The essence of Metal manifests above as the Great White Star.) thus one knows that disease resides in the Skin and Hair, (The Lung governs the Skin and Hair.) its musical note is Shang, (The sound of Metal is Shang, corresponding to Autumn, its transformation relates to Heavenly Stems Yi/Geng and Earthly Branches Mao/You.) its number is Nine, (Earth generates Four for Metal, Heaven completes it with Nine.) its odor is Raw/Fishy (Xing). (Raw odor is transformed by Metal Qi.)
In the North, the color is Black, which internally connects to the Kidney (Shen). The openings are in the two Yin (urethra and anus), and the essence is stored in the Kidney. (The North is the direction where Water energy prevails; the Kidney is the organ belonging to Water, their energies connect. Black is the color of Water. The excretory orifices are the orifices of the Kidney. The essence of Water, when stored in the Kidney, is called Zhi [Will].) Therefore, kidney disease manifests in the Xi (valleys/clefts between muscles), (As stated in *Qi Xue Lun*: large muscle gatherings are Gu, small muscle gatherings are Xi. Xi is where water flows, thus disease resides in the Xi.) The flavor is Salty, the category belongs to Water, (Salty is the flavor of Water.) the domestic animal is the Pig, (Zhi means pig. *I Ching* states Kan represents the Swine. Zhi, pronounced Zhi.) the grain is Beans, (Shu, i.e., beans, black in color belonging to Water.) it corresponds to the season of Winter, and above in the heavens it corresponds to the Morning Star (Chen Xing), (The essence of Water manifests above as the Morning Star.) thus one knows that disease resides in the Bones, (The Kidney governs the Bones.) its musical note is Yu, (The sound of Water is Yu, corresponding to Winter, its transformation relates to Heavenly Stems Bing/Xin and Earthly Branches Chen/Xu.) its number is Six, (Heaven generates One for Water, Earth completes it with Six.) its odor is Rotten/Decayed. (Rotten odor is transformed by Water Qi. *Li Ji Yue Ling* states its odor is Xiu. Xiu is similar to Fu.)
Therefore, those skilled in pulse diagnosis carefully observe the Five Zang and Six Fu Organs, discerning reversal and compliance, Yin and Yang, Exterior and Interior, and the principles of Male and Female (organ pairing). They store these in their mind's intent, aligning their heart with precision. (A skilled diagnostician must be able to perceive the subtleties of Yin-Yang and Zang-Xiang images, aligning them with their own mind, so that spiritual understanding is clear and changes in reversal/compliance leave no room for evasion.) Do not teach unless the person is worthy; do not transmit unless it is the true Dao. This is called attaining the Dao. (Teaching without obtaining a wise and virtuous person merely harms the Dao; transmitting without obtaining a True Person merely confuses the truth. As stated in *Qi Jiao Bian Da Lun*: Obtaining the right person but not teaching them is losing the Dao; transmitting to the wrong person is careless leakage of heavenly treasures. This is what is meant. For detailed meaning, see Section 10 of the Yun Qi Category.)
