(Continuing from the previous text) Carefully deducing the hundred divisions (ke, a unit of time measurement in ancient China) of day and night, the body's vital qi (Zheng Qi) circulates through the celestial sphere 365.25 degrees daily. Thus, for every ten breaths, qi travels six chi, and the sun moves two fen.
After two hundred and seventy breaths, qi travels sixteen zhang and two chi; qi and blood circulate and communicate within, completing one circuit around the body, with water dropping two divisions (ke), and the sun moving twenty fen. After five hundred and forty breaths, qi completes another circuit around the body, with water dropping four divisions, and the sun moving forty fen.
After two thousand seven hundred breaths, qi completes ten circuits around the body, with water dropping twenty divisions, and the sun moving five mansions and twenty fen. In total, after thirteen thousand five hundred breaths, qi performs fifty circuits around the body, with water dropping one hundred divisions. This corresponds exactly to the celestial sphere of 365.25 degrees. Therefore, the sun moves one degree per day, while the moon moves thirteen degrees plus a fraction. The moon completes one circuit of the celestial sphere in twenty-seven days, then moves for an additional two and a half days until the sun and moon meet, forming one lunar month, calculated as twenty-nine and a half degrees, corresponding to twenty-nine days in human terms. Combining these cycles of twenty-nine and a half degrees totals fifty-nine days, hence the variation between full and short lunar months. In one solar year, the sun travels three hundred and fifty-four degrees, corresponding to three hundred and fifty-four days in human reckoning. Since the celestial sphere is 365.25 degrees, constituting one human year, but only 354 degrees are traversed, leaving a remainder of 11.25 degrees, which equals eleven days and three shichen (two-hour periods). Hence, there is one leap year every three years, two leap years every five years, and seven leap years every nineteen years, to complete one chapter (zhang). Upon reaching eighty chapters, the cycle of waxing and waning is exhausted and begins anew.
Taking the celestial sphere of 365 degrees and 25 fen, divided by twenty-eight days, yields approximately thirteen degrees per day. The remaining fractions are distributed according to specific methods to determine the degrees of the sun and moon's movement.
According to the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) and *Su Wen* (Basic Questions), the described flow and distribution (Liu Zhu) differs from that proposed by other schools; its application in tonifying and reducing pulse conditions is miraculous. Use it without error, and you must understand the root and branch (Biao Ben), deficiency and excess (Xu Shi), reversal and normalcy, meeting and following (Ying Sui), opposition and compliance, tonification and reduction, generation and punishment, as well as the Jing-Well, Ying-Spring, Shu-Stream, Jing-River, and He-Sea points. Where vital qi arrives, the meridians open; where it passes, they close. There are eight types of tonification and reduction techniques: Ying-Sui (meeting/following), Di-Shun (sequential/smooth), Needle Rotation, Kai-He (opening/closing), Respiration, Cong-Ni (compliance/opposition), Needle Head, and Six Syllable Breath Techniques.
The *Su Wen* states the method for calculating the daily circulation of vital qi through the hundred divisions of day and night: vital qi circulates 365.25 degrees daily, aligning with the orbital degrees of the sun, moon, and stars. One hundred divisions of day and night equal 1,008 fen; vital qi travels 810 zhang. Thirteen thousand five hundred breaths cover this distance, traversing all twenty-eight mansions, totaling fifty circuits. Vital qi travels through the twenty-eight lodges; each lodge has thirty-six fen, totaling 1,008 fen. Each circuit measures 16 zhang and 2 chi. The method states: Take one hundred divisions, divide by twenty-eight to get thirty-five, with a remainder of sixteen entering the calculation. Subtract sixteen from twenty-eight, stop the subtraction, divide the mother number sixteen, then divide the son number eighteen, each resulting in four. Dividing twenty-eight first gives seven as the denominator; dividing sixteen gives four as the numerator. Accumulating additions exceeding the denominator constitutes one division. Each lodge receives three divisions and four-sevenths; each lodge has thirty-six fen, totaling 1,008 fen. Day and night total fifty circuits, each measuring 16 zhang and 2 chi, totaling 810 zhang, corresponding to 13,500 breaths.
The method sets thirty-six fen, multiplies by eight chi and one cun to get twenty-nine zhang, one chi, and six cun, then divides by sixteen zhang (each circuit is 16 zhang and 2 chi, yielding the number of circuits). This determines the length of blood and qi and the degrees traveled by vital qi. For a person whose height is ten times their body width, when the sun travels one lodge (taking three divisions and four-sevenths): At one division, vital qi travels the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; at two divisions, the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian; at three divisions, the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian; at four divisions, the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian; at five divisions, the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian; at six divisions, the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Explanation of the Diagram of Twenty-Four Solar Terms and Hundred Divisions of Day and Night from Volume Two preceding the Hundred Divisions:
Every circulation of the Twelve Meridians is called one degree (circuit). In one day and night of one hundred divisions, such circulation occurs fifty times as the standard period; otherwise, disease arises. Adding one circuit causes heat; subtracting one circuit causes cold. Therefore, in heat diseases, the pulse is rapid; in cold diseases, the pulse is slow. Adjustments correspond to the severity of the condition. Furthermore, the pulses of the four seasons need not be constant; they vary according to the divisions of day and night, becoming the count of flow distribution. Day is Yang; night is Yin. On the Winter Solstice, the day has forty divisions and the night has sixty, meaning Yang is scarce and Yin is abundant. Thus, when the weather is cold, pulse movement is slow, circulating forty degrees. On the Summer Solstice, the day has sixty divisions and the night has forty, meaning Yin is scarce and Yang is abundant. Thus, when the weather is hot, pulse movement is rapid, circulating sixty degrees. The relationship between the pulse and the divisions of day and night involves a rule of nine days making one division, and adjustments to degrees. If the weather experiences sudden extreme cold or heat, the speed of the pulse also responds to the flow of qi; otherwise, disease arises. Regarding the Twelve Meridians, it does not mean there are twelve separate pulses in the body. There is only one pathway of pulse circulation; upon completing one circuit through the body, it sequentially converges at the Cun Kou (Radial Pulse) to form the Three Locations and Nine Probes (Bu Bu Jiu Hou), revealing the spirit of the Zang and Fu organs. Thus, the Twelve Meridians are defined according to the regions governed by the Hand and Foot Three Yin and Three Yang meridians. Although the Twelve Meridians internally correspond to the Five Zang and Six Fu organs, the numbers do not match perfectly. The so-called Pericardium (Xin Bao Luo) is considered a Zang organ, corresponding to the Hand-Jueyin Meridian, thus making there six Zang organs. Examining recent medical texts and discussions by practitioners, none know the shape or location of the Pericardium Zang, claiming it exists in name but not in form, identifying only the Dan Zhong (Chest Sea) as its manifestation. Based on this view, holding to the root, if one seeks the ultimate principle, one has not fully understood its goodness. Although the classics state that Dan Zhong is the official of the minister, where joy and pleasure emerge, this refers to the branch (biao), not the root (ben), highlighting the place of function rather than the residence of the Zang, which is the profound mystery of the ancient sages. Do we not detail the classic saying, "Beside the seventh vertebra from below, there is the Little Heart"? The human spine has twenty-one vertebrae. Beside the seventh vertebra from the bottom, the left is the Kidney, and the right is the Ming Men (Gate of Life). The Ming Men is indeed the Zang organ of the Pericardium, corresponding to the Hand-Jueyin Meridian, and together with the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao, governs interior and exterior. Both meridians belong to Minister Fire (Xiang Huo), executing the commands of the Sovereign Fire, hence named Ming Men, clarifying its meaning. Furthermore, the *Xuan Zhu* advises taking the source of transformation first, welcoming and treating it on the third day by puncturing Da Ling (Acupoint), stating this is the source of draining Minister Fire and the Little Heart. Thus, it is known that Minister Fire and the Pericardium constitute the Lesser Heart, and the Little Heart is the Right Kidney Ming Men. Additionally, the *Xian Jing* states that the Heart is Sovereign Fire and the Kidney is Minister Fire, implying the Right Kidney Ming Men belongs to Fire rather than Water. Some ask: If Ming Men belongs to Minister Fire, why does joy and pleasure emerge from Dan Zhong? The answer is: Fire qi flares upward, Water flows downward. The path to Ming Men is located in the lower part, where Fire resides in the realm of Water. Because Fire cannot function effectively in this position, its qi ascends to Dan Zhong. Dan Zhong is located between the two breasts in the chest, serving as the Sea of Qi, and is the intersection of the Hand-Jueyin and Hand-Shaoyang meridians, emerging from the realm of ghosts and thieves. Returning to its proper position, Sovereign and Minister Fires are close, receiving the Sovereign's command, exercising power, and initiating qi emission. Hence, it is said that Dan Zhong is the official of the minister, where joy and pleasure emerge. As for the Zang being Yin and governing the interior, and the Fu being Yang and governing the exterior, each Zang-Fu pair governs interior and exterior as Yin and Yang. This is not the way of husband-wife Yin-Yang pairing, but rather the meaning of siblings, sharing the same surname.
Whenever one Zang and one Fu combine, they each govern one region among the Left, Right, and Central positions, following their prosperous qi's main position, and their pulses appear sequentially.
