Shegan San liang, Mahuang Si liang, Ziwan San liang, Kuandonghua San liang, Beixixin San liang, Wuweizi Ban sheng, Banxia Ban sheng, Shengjiang (appropriate amount).
The above nine herbs are decocted with one dou and two sheng of water. First, boil Mahuang until it boils twice, skim off the foam on the surface, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid, and take in three divided warm doses.
Shegan Tang is a compound formula composed of herbs with bitter, acrid, and warm properties that enter the Lung meridian. The sound in the throat resembling that of a water frog indicates rattling caused by phlegm and qi moving in and out of the throat. This condition arises from cold in the Lung due to the failure of Yang qi to circulate freely; it requires a draining method to clear cold from the Lung meridian.
Houpu Five liang, Mahuang Si liang, Shigao (size of a chicken egg), Xingren Ban sheng, Banxia Ban sheng, Ganjiang Er liang, Xixin Er liang, Xiaomai (appropriate amount).
The above nine herbs are decocted with one dou and two sheng of water. First, boil Xiaomai until cooked, strain to remove the dregs, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid, take one sheng warm per dose, three times daily.
Houpu Mahuang Tang is a modified formula derived from Da Qinglong Tang and Xiao Qinglong Tang. Cough accompanied by rebellious Qi rising with audible sounds and a floating pulse indicate that external pathogens are stirring up Water Qi from the Lower Jiao causing it to rebel upward. This pattern is unrelated to the harmonizing of Ying and Wei using Guizhi, Shaoyao, and Gancao. Therefore, Houpu is added to direct Stomach Qi downward, and Xiaomai is added to restrain Heart Qi from overacting upon the Lungs. Mahuang, Xingren, and Shigao continue to clear heat and preserve Yin from the Lung meridian. Xixin and Banxia penetrate into the Yin aspect to dispel Water-Cold. Ganjiang and Wuweizi secure Taiyang Qi and monitor/control rebellion. In one move, this formula achieves the effects of clearing heat, directing Qi downward, expelling pathogens, and consolidating the root. Thus, the clear and descending function of the Lung meridian restores itself naturally. Why worry about cough and rebellious Qi with sounds being unsettled?
Maidong Seven sheng, Banxia One sheng, Renshen San liang, Gancao Er liang, Jingmi San he, Dazao Twelve pieces.
The above six herbs are decocted with one dou and two sheng of water. Decoct to obtain six sheng of liquid. Take one sheng warm per dose, three times during the day and once at night.
Maidong Tang is a formula that generates fluids from the Stomach to rescue dryness, treating rebellious Qi caused by deficient Fire. The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: "Rebellious Qi due to Fire obstruction, with difficulty in the throat," aiming to stop rebellion and direct Qi downward. Therefore, the disease belongs to deficient Fire, and cold medicines should be avoided. Dates (Dazao) tonify Spleen Qi and ease urgency.
