(The following content is also stated by Xu Zhongguang.)
Case 1: The smallpox lesions were sparse and delicate, with a lack of spirit. During the swelling stage, diarrhea accompanied by asthma occurred; this was due to Qi deficiency. It was cured by administering Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Boost the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg).
Case 2: The smallpox pustules were full of fluid, accompanied by phlegm-asthma and solid stools. This resulted from excessive tonification leading to Lung heat. It was cured by administering Zhi Qiao Tang (Immature Bitter Orange Decoction) with added Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Seed), Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel), and Gua Lou (Trichosanthes Fruit).
Case 3: Upon the shedding of scabs during the recovery phase of smallpox, urgent asthma and abdominal distension appeared. Since the patient could eat, it was not inverted scabbing (Dao Ye). It was cured by consuming Baohe Tang (Preserve Harmony Decoction).
Case 4: Urgent asthma occurred when the smallpox pustules were fully filled with fluid. It was cured using Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Herb), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Dong Hua (Winter Flower), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Yan Chao Ju Hong (Salt-fried Tangerina Peel), and Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf).
Case 5: Urgent asthma occurred during smallpox. It was cured by drinking Shui Jian decoction of Bai Hua Di Ding (Hedyotis Diffusa Herb), which stopped the symptoms immediately like magic.
Case 6: Asthma persisted for a long time after smallpox. It was cured by taking several doses of decoction made from Mi Chao Ma Huang (Honey-fried Ephedra Herb), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Sang Pi (Mulberry Root Bark), Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot Flower), each one qian, and five Bai Guo (Ginkgo Nut). Another opinion suggests that adding Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), and Su Zi (Perilla Fruit) would be more appropriate.
Case 7: Persistent asthma and vomiting occurred after smallpox. It was cured by using Chang Liu Shui (Long-flowing Water), agitated one hundred times, to decoct medicines that clear the upper jiao.
Case 8: Urgent asthma with heavy voice occurred after smallpox, caused by external cold-water qi invading the Lung. It was cured using Mi Chao Ma Huang (Honey-fried Ephedra Herb), Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Che Qian (Plantago Seed), Ting Li (Lepidium Seed), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root).
Case 9: Phlegm-cough, asthma, and vomiting occurred after smallpox. It was cured by taking pills made from E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Nu Mi (Glutinous Rice), each one liang, Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Seed) and Dou Ling (Campanula Root), each three qian, three Xing Ren (Apricot Seeds), and five fen of Gan Cao (Licorice Root).
Case 10: Diarrhea and urgent asthma occurred after smallpox; this was due to Lung deficiency. It was cured by taking a decoction of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) one qian and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) three qian.
Case 11: Persistent phlegm-asthma occurred after smallpox, caused by fire invading the Lung. It was cured by taking a decoction of Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Lian Qiao (though text says Lian, likely Coptis given context of clearing heat, but strictly "Lian" usually refers to Lian Qiao or Huang Lian; here interpreted as Huang Lian based on pairing with Huang Qin in similar contexts, however text says "Qin, Lian", so Huang Qin and Huang Lian), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root), and Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root).
Case 12: On the eighth day of smallpox, all lesions were fully filled with fluid. Due to the summer month, excessive sweating led to removing clothes, causing heat to be suppressed by pathogenic factors. Suddenly, teeth grinding, urgent asthma, and diarrhea occurred, lasting a full day and night, with inverted scabs appearing on the cheeks. Initially, Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed), Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange), Qing Pi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium), Chen Pi (Tangerina Peel), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Ting Li (Lepidium Seed), Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Che Qian (Plantago Seed), and Can Sha (Silkworm Droppings) were used. A slight sweat ensued, and the asthma eased. Subsequently, Zhen Zhe Dan (Shocking Insect Pill) three fen was administered, followed by Da Qing Wan (Great Blue Pill) three pills, Xiao Qing Wan (Little Blue Pill) five pills, and Da Ling Wan (Great Spirit Pill) three pills. After two consecutive doses, it was cured.
Wan Mizhai treated the son of the Cheng family, who was under one year old. He laughed frequently, indicating excess Heart Fire. He prescribed pills made of Chuan Lian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), and Chen Sha (Cinnabar). After three days, the laughter gradually decreased. Subsequently, he contracted smallpox, developed fever, and suddenly suffered from asthma with salivary sounds in the throat and breathing noises. This was a Lung Heat syndrome. Fortunately, there was no shoulder-lifting respiration or cold limbs. Therefore, Qing Jin San Tang (Clear Metal Powder Decoction) was prescribed. One dose reduced symptoms by half, and a second dose settled the asthma. Had this diagnosis not been made, it would have been perilous.
