Zhang Zihe treated a man who had been beaten with a staff. The wound became painful, toxic heat entered the interior, and phlegm-fluids from fright blocked the airway, causing lockjaw (trismus) so that food and medicine could not be swallowed. This persisted for over a month; all treatments failed, and the patient was near death. First, San Sheng San (Three Holy Powders) was administered to induce vomiting of green phlegm and fright-phlegm, amounting to about half a large jar. Next, Li Ge Wan (Diaphragm-Opening Pills) were given in quantities of over one hundred pills, resulting in the evacuation of foul, dry feces, another full jar. Then, Tong Sheng San (Universal Salvation Powder) was decocted in small amounts and taken hot, followed by inducing sweating with a sour, spicy scallion and vinegar soup. Soon after, sweating and purging occurred simultaneously, and the patient survived. This method can save those who have suffered unjust punishment.
Zheng Jinyao had a formula for staff injuries called "Zhang Dan" (Staff Injury Elixir). It consists of leeches (Hirudo, 水蛭) ground into powder, mixed with a small amount of mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas, 朴硝), and applied topically with water to the wound. It has been used on many people with good results. (From *Zhiya Tang Za Chao*)
In the Gengchen year of the Chongzhen reign, Huang Gong Shizhai, Xie Gong Shifan, and Ye Gong Runshan were beaten with staffs. Scholars planned to use python gallbladder (Boa Gallbladder, 蚺蛇胆) to detoxify. I considered this to be extremely cold-natured and capable of causing sterility. Instead, I recommended using Notoginseng Root (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 三七), Ilmenite (Ferrum Oxydatum Rubrum, 无名异), and earthworms (Pheretima, 地龙) made into wax pills, taken with wine, so that pain would not be felt during beating. If these were unavailable, one ounce of white beeswax (Cera Flava/Alba, 白蜡) and one centipede (Scolopendra, 蜈蚣), taken with wine, were also effective. In the Renwu year, Xiong Gong Yushan and Jiang Gong Qingshu again received beatings for speaking truthfully. They sent messengers urgently requesting my advice. The *Zhongzhou Ji* records: During the Zhenyuan era, Gao Qi held power, and scholars were whipped and humiliated. Physicians prescribed Di Long San (Earthworm Powder, 地龙散) with wine, followed by wax pills, rendering the patients insensible to pain. Fan Zhong wrote: "Who knows the taste of chewing wax is longest? A cup of morning wine makes earthworms fragrant. Paper prices in Chang'an are high these years; people value medicinal prescriptions more than new poems." I write this incident and sigh. For blue and swollen scars, radish (Raphani Fructus, 莱菔) mashed and applied dissipates them immediately, or green mung bean powder (Phaseoli Radiati Semen, 绿豆粉) mixed with water can be applied. (From *Ke Zhong Jian Ji*)
Xue Lizhai treated Wen Yonghui, a Minister of Justice, who knelt at the palace gate to remonstrate against a southern tour and was beaten. The blood stasis had dispersed, but necrotic flesh did not ulcerate. He used internal fortification drugs; it slightly ulcerated but the pus was clear. This indicated deficiency of qi and blood, which could not be supplemented without large doses of Ginseng Root (Ginseng Radix, 人参) and Astragalus Root (Astragali Radix, 黄芪). Mr. Wen also understood medicine; fearing abdominal fullness, he forced himself to eat slightly, allowing him to think clearly. Thus, larger tonifying doses were added. Food intake increased daily, the flesh ulcerated, pus became thick, and he recovered. He once treated Jiang Hanlin Yao, Wang, Zheng (three Ministry of Personnel officials), Li, Jiang, Chen (three Ministry of Rites officials), and Nan, Wu (two Ministries of Justice officials), all colleagues of Mr. Wen. First, their blood stasis was dispersed, then gradually using drainage and internal fortification drugs, all recovered. Loud crying injures qi; enduring pain injures blood. The deficiency of qi and blood is thus clear. Moreover, the spleen governs muscles. If spleen qi is injured, food intake decreases. If blood stagnates ("freezes"), muscles do not flourish. Therefore, the spleen must be regulated; when the spleen is healthy, muscles grow naturally. Without drugs like Ginseng, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术), Angelica Sinensis Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 当归), and Astragalus, to nourish spleen earth, how would muscles arise? However, one must distinguish between deficiency and excess in the patient, and whether there is stagnant blood stasis. Generally, if beaten or fallen, skin and flesh are intact but the abdomen hurts, there must be internal blood stasis, best treated with Fu Yuan Huo Xue Tang (Revive the Blood Decoction, 复元活血汤). For the elderly and weak, Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction, 四物汤) plus Safflower Seed (Carthami Flos, 红花), Peach Kernel (Persicae Semen, 桃仁), and Pangolin Scales (Manis Squama, 穿山甲) should be used to tonify while moving blood. If much blood is lost leading to irritability, this is blood deficiency, termed "loss of blood," treated with Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction, 独参汤). If injury is slight, with no other blood stasis symptoms, only persistent stasis-pain, one need only harmonize qi and blood and regulate meridians; pain will stop naturally. Further using blood-nourishing and spleen-strengthening drugs yields excellent results. If trauma causes stomach qi rebellion with vomiting or anorexia, Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction, 四君子汤) plus Patchouli Herb (Agastachis Herba, 藿香), Amomum Fruit (Amomi Fructus Rotundus, 砂仁), and Angelica Sinensis Root treats it. If blood stasis exists and tonics are added before dispersing it, it creates a "double excess" disaster (treating excess as excess). If no blood stasis exists and purgatives are wrongly used, it creates a "double deficiency" disaster (treating deficiency as deficiency).
Xia Feng, from Beijing, suffered staff wounds where buttocks and knees completely ulcerated. Pus and stasis had not exited, and he frequently fell into stupor due to internal toxin action. Urgently opening the orifices worsened the stupor, indicating deficiency. Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction, 八珍汤) was given; one dose brought slight relief. After several doses, dead flesh naturally rotted and was removed. He was instructed to wash the wound with pig trotter soup, apply Shen Xiao Dang Gui Gao (Miraculous Angelica Ointment, 神效当归膏), and take Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Comprehensive Great Tonifying Decoction, 十全大补汤). He recovered in two months. Using blood-breaking patches here would have been dangerous. Generally, staff injuries involve blood stasis. Superficial cases are treated with bian stone (stone lancets); deep cases with needles. These are harmonized with blood-activating and qi-moving drugs. Internal ulcers are opened; necrotic flesh is removed; recovery is ensured by using stomach-strengthening and blood-generating drugs to support the body. Injuries to tendons and bones causing pain are treated with Moyao Jiang Sheng Dan (Myrrh Supreme Victory Pill, 没药降圣丹). If lockjaw or opisthotonos (back arching) occurs, Yu Zhen San (Jade True Powder, 玉真散) is effective.
Xue Lizhai treated a man who, after beating, experienced distension and stuffiness in both hypochondria, desire to cough without success, metallic taste in mouth, generalized swelling/pain in buttocks and legs, fatigue, anorexia, irritability, and a large pulse. This was irritability due to blood loss. He was given child urine mixed with wine, and the affected areas were scarified, releasing much dark blood and necrotic tissue. Suddenly, fever, irritability, and sweating occurred. Three doses of Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction, 独参汤) slightly stopped symptoms. Then, drugs tonifying qi/blood and clearing liver fire were used for several doses, improving appetite. Intermittent Du Shen Tang eventually resolved all symptoms and greatly improved diet. Insomnia remained; Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction, 归脾汤) plus Gardenia Fruit (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀) and Bamboo Shavings (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia, 竹茹) for four doses induced deep sleep. Mental exertion caused irritability, thirst, spontaneous sweating, and a large, forceless pulse. Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction, 当归补血汤) for two doses stabilized him. Then, Shi Quan Da Bu Tang minus Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 川芎), plus Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 麦冬), Schisandra Berry (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 五味子), Moutan Cortex (Moutan Radicis Cortex, 牡丹皮), Groundtree Bark (Lycii Cortex, 地骨皮), Hemp Root (Ephedrae Radix, 麻黄根), and fried floating wheat (Tritici Spica Preparata, 炒浮小麦) for several doses stopped sweating and allowed necrotic flesh to ulcerate. Over twenty more doses generated new flesh.
Another man presented with irritability, red face, dry mouth/thirst, and a surging-large pulse that felt empty upon pressure. This was irritability due to blood deficiency. Dang Gui Bu Xiang Tang (Angelica Tonifying Blood Decoction, 当归补血汤) for two doses stopped it. Later, afternoon fever occurred; Si Wu Tang plus Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix, 柴胡), Moutan Cortex, Groundtree Bark, Anemarrhena Rhizome (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 知母), and Phellodendron Bark (Phellodendri Chinensis Cortex, 黄柏) cleared heat and closed the wound. Dong Yuan stated: Fever with chills, extreme thirst, and a large, forceless pulse is NOT Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction, 白虎汤) syndrome. This is blood-deficiency irritability, treated with Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang. Mr. Fei said: Muscle heat, restlessness, red eyes/face, and a surging-large but empty pulse indicate blood deficiency. Misusing Bai Hu Tang leads to danger or death.
A man, after beating, had sweat on forehead, heat/thirst, shortness of breath, bone pain, and non-ulcerated stasis. This was qi deficiency with blood heat. Necrotic tissue was excised, bleeding occurred, and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, 黄芩)/Lian Lian (Coptis Rhizome, 黄连) worsened it. Pulse was surging-large yet faint, indicating combined qi/blood deficiency with fierce pathogenic fire. Si Wu Tang plus Ginseng, Astragalus, Atractylodes, Licorice, with small amounts of Bupleurum and fried Scutellaria for two doses stopped head sweat. Adding Ophiopogon, Schisandra, and Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 肉桂) for two doses resolved symptoms. Subsequently, Ginseng, Astragalus, Angelica, Atractylodes, fried White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 炒芍药), Prepared Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地), Ophiopogon, and Schisandra for over ten doses caused stasis to ulcerate and pus to thicken. New flesh did not grow; doubling Atractylodes in the previous formula promoted closure.
A man, after beating, had blood stasis flowing downward, turning black on waist, hypochondria, and legs. This was widespread stasis infusion. Child urine/wine was drunk, scarification released stasis/necrotic tissue. Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction, 小柴胡汤) minus Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 半夏), plus Gardenia, Scutellaria, Coptis, and Drynaria Rhizome (Drynariae Rhizoma, 骨碎补) cleared liver fire. Ba Zhen Tang and Poria (Poria, 茯苓) strengthened spleen/stomach. Dead flesh ulcerated, new flesh grew. The wound re-ulcerated later; quiet recuperation led to recovery in over a year.
Blood stasis attacked the scrotum of another man, ulcerating into a fistula with thin pus. He had taken cold-natured drugs. Liver pulse was short and choppy; others were floating and forceless. Liver wood was controlled by Lung metal, and yuan qi was deficient, unable to consolidate. A formula strengthening spleen/stomach and generating qi/blood was used. Yuan qi partially recovered, but he died on a day associated with strong Metal.
A man had swelling, pain, fever, thirst, and sweating at the injury site, indicating stasis-pain. Scarification removed filth to unblock obstruction. Si Wu Tang, Bupleurum, Scutellaria, Gardenia, Moutan Cortex, and Drynaria cleared liver fire, curing him.
Another man had rubbing dispersal but persistent swelling, indicating internal stasis requiring urgent scarification. He refused, so fresh radish juice mixed with Gardenia powder was applied topically, and ointment on broken skin, plus oral blood-activating drugs. He recovered. Years later, cloudy weather caused itching/pain, realizing the error of not scarifying.
After beating, a man had black swelling of buttocks/legs, skin intact, heavy distending pain. Others assumed no internal stasis, applying cooling drugs. His Chi pulse was choppy and knotted. Due to obesity, stasis was deep. Needling cured it; otherwise, muscle rotting and tendon/bone damage would occur. Four-cun needle insertion drained liters of black blood, stopping pain. That day, fever/chills, irritability/thirst/headache appeared due to qi/blood deficiency. Shi Quan Da Bu Tang cured him.
Another man had internal stasis distension, dull pain, fever, thirst, poor taste in mouth, limb fatigue after beating. This was liver fire pain affecting spleen earth. Fortunately, he was robust and young; fire-reducing, liver-clearing, blood-activating drugs cured him.
Another man had distending pain, sorrow/anger after beating. This was liver fire from emotional agitation. Scarification removed stasis; Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Gardenia, Coptis, Platycodon Root (Platycodi Radix, 桔梗) calmed him. Later, liver-blood-nourishing and spleen-qi-tonifying drugs closed the wound.
Another man had swelling, distending pain, fever, nausea, hot/hypochondrial distension, and surging liver pulse after beating. This was liver fire hypochondrial distension. Drinking child urine and Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Coptis, Gardenia, Angelica Tail (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 归尾), and Safflower cured him. If the left Guan pulse were floating/forceless and abdominal pressing revealed no distension, it would be blood-deficiency liver distension, treated with Si Wu Tang, Ginseng, Poria, Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 青皮), Licorice. If left Guan pulse were surging/forceful with tender abdominal distension, it would be anger-injuring-liver syndrome, treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang, Chuanxiong, Angelica, Tangerine Peel, White Peony, Platycodon, Aurantium Fruit (Aurantii Fructus, 枳壳). Regardless of beating severity or blood loss, severe twisting/pressing and angry exertion injure qi, sending stasis to the liver, causing these symptoms. Severe cases involve chest/hypochondrial fullness, blocked qi pathways, or nose/mouth bleeding, often fatal.
After recovering from beating, a man had bitter taste, hypochondrial pain. Kidney-tonifying/qi-moving drugs failed. Liver pulse was floating/forceless, indicating liver/gallbladder deficiency. Ginseng, Astragalus, Chuanxiong, Angelica, Rehmannia, Atractylodes, Ophiopogon, Schisandra cured him.
Another man took Si Wu Tang, Peach Kernel, Safflower, Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄) to expel stasis after beating, but developed abdominal pain worsening with more doses. This was blood-deficiency abdominal pain. Warming/tonifying drugs, specifically Angelica Root (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 归身), Atractylodes, Ginseng, Astragalus, Honey-fried Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, 炙草), for two doses stopped pain.
After beating, stasis gone, anorexia, non-ulcerated necrotic flesh. Fortification drugs yielded clear pus, indicating blood-deficiency non-ulceration requiring major tonification. He resisted, forcing large tonics, improving diet and ulcerating flesh. Insomnia remained; Gui Pi Tang plus Gardenia for two doses cured it. Mental exertion caused irritability/thirst, floating-surging pulse. Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang for two doses stabilized him.
A man subjected to severe punishment had broken skin, pouring stasis, internal rot/dark swelling extending to chest/back/toes, stupor/anorexia. This was cold-congealment preventing ulceration. Hot black sheepskin was applied, child urine/wine and thin gruel灌ed, plus liver-clearing/blood-activating/spleen-regulating drugs. Consciousness slightly returned, reporting body stiffness/pain. Large qi/blood-tonifying drugs reduced swelling and improved appetite. In mid-winter, stasis congealed, preventing pus maturation. Major tonifying drugs strengthened yang, ripening pus. Scarification exposed bone. Angelica ointment and previous herbs for over 100 doses gradually regenerated muscle.
Another man had severe deficiency/ulceration after beating, with internal heat toxins, desiring cooling drugs. This was spleen-deficiency failure to close. Without Angelica, Atractylodes, Ginseng, Astragalus to nourish spleen earth, how would muscles grow? Cold/clearing drugs would further injure qi/blood. Previous drugs cured him.
Another man had abdominal distension, vomiting/dizziness, bone/tendon pain after beating. This was blood-deficiency tendon spasm. Bupleurum, Scutellaria, Gardenia, Perilla Leaf (Perillae Folium, 紫苏), Apricot Kernel (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 杏仁), Aurantium Fruit, Platycodon, Chuanxiong, Angelica, Red Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 赤芍), Safflower, Peach Kernel for four doses settled it. Later, excessive bleeding caused stupor/black vision; Shi Quan Da Bu Tang revived him. With rotting muscle, dripping pus, tendon spasm/bone pain, pulses were floating-choppy and sinking-weak, indicating qi/blood depletion failing to nourish tendons. Nourishing qi/blood drugs cured him.
After staff wound recovery, poor regulation caused unclear head/eyes, indicating kidney deficiency with qi reversal. Wind-dispelling/phlegm-resolving drugs worsened dizziness. Niuhuang Qingxin Wan (Calculus Bovis Heart-Clearing Pill, 牛黄清心丸) caused abdominal stasis-pain, wound itching/fever/thirst/anorexia, rising phlegm/qi, suspected residual toxin recurrence. Left Chi pulse was surging-large but empty upon pressure, indicating kidney meridian insufficiency failing to return to source. Ginseng, Astragalus, Poria, Tangerine Peel, Angelica, Chuanxiong, Prepared Rehmannia, Chinese Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 山药), Cornus Fruit (Corni Fructus, 山萸肉), Schisandra, Ophiopogon, Honey-fried Licorice cured him quickly. Later, exertion caused heat/thirst/headache/fatigue/anorexia; Buyang Huan Wu Tang (Tonify Yang to Restore Five Tenths Decoction - *Note: Text says Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang*, 补中益气汤) plus Ophiopogon/Schisandra cured him.
After beating, leg pain suggested excessive pus/blood loss. Though healed, liver meridian blood was insufficient, allowing damp-heat to attack liver. Ba Zhen Tang plus Achyranthes Root (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 牛膝), Papaya (Chaenomelis Fructus, 木瓜), Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 苍术), Phellodendron, Stephania Stem (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Caulis, 防己), Licorice cleared damp-heat/nourished yin blood. Pain stopped; Stephania/Phellodendron removed, continued cure.
After beating, missed scarification caused distending pain/thirst. Drinking cold child urine stopped distension. Mashed radish applied dispersed blood. Itching followed; application stopped itch. Thirst, lower abdomen pulling penile pain, dysuria-like symptoms, white discharge occurred, indicating liver meridian depressed fire. Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Rhubarb, Coptis, Gardenia resolved symptoms; blood-nourishing drugs stabilized him. Lower abdominal pain pulling to penis is often mistaken for cold, treated with hot drugs, causing bleeding from orifices or bowel/bladder blockage, even danger. Mild cases damage eyes. (Misusing hot drugs for liver depression always causes great harm.)
Another man had severe pain, fever, vomiting/anorexia, chest diaphragm stuffiness after beating. Qi-moving/blood-breaking drugs worsened it, causing thirst, irregular bowels, dark wound color. This was pain injuring stomach causing vomiting. Si Jun Zi Tang, Angelica, fried Scutellaria, soft Bupleurum, Patchouli for two doses improved symptoms. Large tonifying drugs closed the wound.
Another man had fever/dull pain after beating. Cold drugs worsened thirst/abdominal pain. Suspecting stasis, he wanted purgatives. Abdomen was not tender; pulse was minute/fine/slow. Food aversion to cold/vomiting indicated cold drugs injuring stomach. Six Jun Zi Tang plus White Peony, Angelica, Processed Aconite Root (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 炮附子) 1 qian each worsened symptoms, adding delirium/red face. Assuming drug effect hadn't reached, adding 0.5 qian Aconite (*requires expert eye*) induced sleep. Upon waking, all diseases retreated.
Another man had stasis gone, normal diet/energy, but heat/thirst/dull pain, phlegm in diaphragm after beating. Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Trichosanthes Root (Trichosanthis Radix, 花粉), Fritillaria Bulb (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, 贝母), Platycodon, Gardenia for two doses slightly improved. Adding Rehmannia Root (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地), Angelica Tail, Scutellaria, Bupleurum, Gardenia, Trichosanthes cured him. Among over 100 patients, only this one had undamaged qi/blood after beating. Practitioners should note this.
Another man mistakenly took qi-moving drugs after beating, causing chest stuffiness, shortness of breath, anorexia/fatigue, dark color/clear pus. This was combined form/qi deficiency. Six Jun Zi Tang + Platycodon for two doses harmonized chest diaphragm qi. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang minus Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 升麻), plus Poria, Pinellia, Schisandra, Ophiopogon gradually restored yuan qi. Using previous drugs would have damaged yuan qi, likely fatal.
Removing stasis from injury site, treating with Si Wu Tang, Bupleurum, Safflower stopped dull pain. But chills/fever/thirst/anorexia occurred. Si Wu Tang, Atractylodes, Poria, Bupleurum, Scutellaria, Trichosanthes for four doses resolved chills/fever. Six Jun Zi Tang, Chuanxiong, Angelica, Patchouli improved diet. Although necrotic flesh ulcerated and pus thickened, accidentally taking one measure of purgative caused four diarrheas and dark wound color. Fortunately, pulse was not surging-rapid. Shi Quan Da Bu Tang doubled with Cinnamon Bark, Ophiopogon, Schisandra for several doses restored red flesh and new growth. Being young facilitated recovery; healed in over a month, otherwise fatal. Generally, for staff injuries/falls with stasis, only scarification and yuan qi-strengthening drugs are suitable. Since qi/blood are already damaged, qi-moving/blood-draining drugs must not be used to further injure spleen/stomach, making circulation difficult and leading to defeat syndromes. Weak individuals often die prematurely.
A man subjected to beating applied cold drugs to reduce stasis internally, causing cold buttocks/legs and chest/abdominal stuffiness. Urgently removing topical drugs, washing with hot child urine/wine, taking Six Jun Zi Tang, Aucklandia Root (Aucklandiae Radix, 木香), Cinnamon Bark for four doses resolved stasis, then needled. Strengthening spleen/stomach and nourishing qi/blood led to recovery. Qi/blood move with warmth, coagulate with cold. Extreme cold generates heat, transforming into pus. Deep rotting/ulceration败败s qi/blood, preventing muscle generation. Survival is difficult.
Another man had fever/irritability after beating. Si Wu Tang, Scutellaria, Safflower, soft Bupleurum, Gardenia, Trichosanthes cleared heat. Deep stasis required needle drainage. He refused, suddenly developing lockjaw/wound pain. Needle drainage of pus/blood provided immediate relief. Internal fortification/blood-nourishing promoted new flesh. Sudden itching indicated wind-heat; wind-dispelling/detoxifying drugs cured him.
One man had buttock/leg distending pain, fever/irritability after beating. Dead blood was pricked out; pain slightly eased but heat/restlessness worsened. This was blood-loss with fierce pathogenic fire. Urgent Du Shen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction, 独参汤) tonified, slight improvement. Spleen-strengthening/qi-blood-nourishing drugs resolved rot/ulceration. Generally, such cases require preemptive tonification to support consolidation. Never deplete qi/blood without tonifying, leading to failure to consolidate.
A man injured hand in mid-summer, with back/waist distension, lockjaw, floating/scattered pulse. This was exterior syndrome. Qiang Huo Fang Feng Tang (Notopterygium and Saposhnikovia Decoction, 羌活防风汤) for one dose resolved it. In autumn/winter when pores are tight, Ephedra (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄) type drugs are needed for sweating. This is acute injury treatment without qi/blood damage.
Another man had slightly broken wound pain, surging-large solid pulse. This was interior syndrome. Da Xiong Huang Tang (Large Chuanxiong and Rhubarb Decoction, 大芎黄汤) for one dose caused slight bowel movement, resolving symptoms. Exterior drugs would be fatal. Differentiate exterior/interior, deficiency/excess urgently to avoid error.
Another man had chills/fever/thirst after beating. Si Wu Tang, Ginseng, Astragalus, Atractylodes, soft Bupleurum, fried Scutellaria, Ophiopogon, Schisandra for four doses slightly improved. Desired scarification to remove stasis...
