Xu Zhongguang treated a child who, after smallpox, initially presented with fine white spots on the black pupil (cornea and iris area). The stool was smooth, but tidal fever occurred daily in the afternoon. Someone used chicken, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), and Weilingxian (Clematis Root) for cooking and eating, which resulted in the high swelling and protrusion of the Tongshen (pupil and spirit of the eye), and redness and swelling of the Baijing (sclera and bulbar conjunctiva). Xu used Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill) decocted and taken orally, combined with Yuhuang San (Feathered Emperor Powder), and the child recovered after five or six doses.
Another child had nebulae (opacities) growing on the Baijing, gradually covering the black pupil. Continuous use of drugs to dispel wind, remove nebulae, cool blood, and clear heat was ineffective. Subsequently, Xieqing Wan and Yuhuang San were used, administered intermittently for several doses, leading to stabilization. Prescription: Ebucaocao (Galium Pavonii Herba) stir-fried with salt and wine until dry, and Bajieli (Tribuli Fructus) each 2 liang; Gujingcao (Evodiae Fructus) and Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha) each 2 liang; Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) each 5 fen; three sheep gallbladders. Made into honey pills, take 2 qian per dose, washed down with salt water. (This formula is called Yuhuang San.)
Wan Mizhai treated the daughter of Vice-Commander Xiao. After smallpox, she did not abstain from rich and strong-flavored foods. Local custom dictates that patients must consume Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), eat rooster, and moxa the Guanyuan point (CV4). Despite warnings, she did not listen. Later, both eyelids became ulcerated and rotten-looking. This indicated toxin erupting in the Liver, with hyperactive Liver fire. Someone asked: "The upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen; does the Spleen also have heat?" Wan said: "This is due to incessant tearing, causing maceration and ulceration." He then used Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill) removing Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), adding Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Mimenghua (Mnesarchae Flower), made into honey pills. She took them for half a year and recovered. (Note: Xiao was from Jiangxi, and this custom persists there today.)
Sun, a shaman in Lei County, treated his child for smallpox. On the seventh day, the eruption inverted (collapsed inward). Although it had erupted, the toxin was still severe. To resolve the toxin, considering the child's inherent deficiency of Middle Qi, there was fear of inversion. To tonify the Middle, there was fear of aiding the toxic fire, which might further damage the eyes. It was better to regulate diet and adjust cold/warmth, waiting for spontaneous recovery. They did not listen and administered Ginseng and Renshen (Codonopsis) along with warming and tonifying agents. Later, both eyes went blind.
The son of Instructor Wang, after smallpox, exhibited photophobia (aversion to light) in both eyes. This indicated excessive Liver fire, suitable for treating with Xiegan San (Draining Liver Powder) plus Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). The first dose used Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) soaked in wine. The child refused to take it due to bitterness and indeed developed internal cataracts and blindness.
The son of the Xiao family had white nebulae in the eyes after smallpox. The doctor said: "This is a smallpox scar; treatment will be futile." He indeed went blind.
Xu Shudao treated a child whose smallpox pustules had not yet crusted over, using Chen Shi Muxiang San (Chen's Costus Powder) for one dose. He said: "This is a mistake; the eyes will surely be damaged." Indeed, one eye went blind.
The Zhou family's daughter had her eyes closed and unable to open after smallpox. The doctor said: "The smallpox course was favorable with no residual toxin; this must be a case of photophobia." A test was performed: when facing darkness, the eyes opened; when facing light, they closed. There was no tearing. This indicated that the Fire pathogen in the Liver meridian had not been eliminated. Treatment involved Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix tail), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen), Mimenghua (Mnesarchae Flower), Sheng Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Dan Zhuyez (Phyllostachys Viridis Folium). One dose allowed the eyes to open, accompanied by swelling and protrusion of smallpox scars all over the body. Subsequently, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) plus Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Renshen (Codonopsis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) cured the condition.
The Zhou family's nine-year-old son went outside after smallpox and suddenly developed head swelling and inability to open his eyes. This was not toxin, but Wind-Heat. Treatment with Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gaoben (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos), and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) cured him.
Wang Kentang treated his nephew Mao. After smallpox, nebulae grew in both eyes, with extreme photophobia. Windows were covered with clothes and quilts. When viewing in bright light, white membranes completely covered the black pupils, and tears flowed like springs. Pediatric and ophthalmological treatments failed, leaving practitioners helpless. He closed the door and pondered: "The eyes are where Clear Yang ascends. The sudden appearance of nebulae indicates invasion by Turbid Yin. How dare Turbid Yin oppose Yang? Hence the extreme photophobia." He used Huangqi (Astragali Radix) to assist Clear Yang as the Sovereign herb; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to nourish the true blood of the eyes as Ministers; Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos), and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) to ascend Clear Yang; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhu Danzhi (Porci Bile), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), and Fuling (Poria) to descend Turbid Yin as Assistants. Intermittently, Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill) was also administered. After eight doses, the eyes opened and the nebulae disappeared. All ophthalmic drops and washes were discarded; only juice ground from olive pits was applied to the upper eyelids. This was because infants are tender and fragile, and drop/wash medications would inevitably cause injury.
Fei Jianzhong treated a three-year-old girl. Her smallpox was sparse, protruding, red, and healthy-looking, suggesting no medication might be needed. However, she had intense fever like burning, incessant crying, and the left eye was swollen like a peach. Using Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Ganju (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Dingduan (Taraxaci Herba), and Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), administered continuously for three days, her body finally cooled, spirit calmed, and the eye remained unharmed. (Note: For post-smallpox eye nebulae, lychee flesh mashed into paste applied to the fontanelle can cure it. However, if more than one hundred days have passed, it is ineffective.)
