The *Waitai Miyao* (Secret Essentials of the Outer Palace) provides a prescription for treating aversion to cold, shivering as if about to develop a back carbuncle (Fabei), or where sores, swellings, and urticaria have already appeared.
Three taels of Nux (Natrii Sulfas) are mixed with one sheng of warm water until dissolved. Once cooled, take an old green cloth folded into three layers, sized to match the reddened area of the lesion. Apply the wet cloth to the affected area; replace it when it becomes hot. Frequent changes lead to immediate recovery.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) treats Fabei (Back Carbuncle).
Take 100 live snails and place them in a clean one-sheng bottle. Add one zhan of freshly drawn water to the bottle, seal it tightly from evening until morning, then release the snails. The remaining liquid becomes viscous like saliva. Mix this with genuine Concha Meretricis (Clam Shell Powder) in any proportion, apply to the lesion, and sweep it on with a chicken feather. This can be done more than ten times a day; the heat and pain will cease, and the sore will heal.
Cui Yuanliang’s *Haishang Fang* (Sea Above Prescriptions) offers a secret method for treating Fabei. Li Beihai stated that this prescription was divinely inspired and extremely rare and confidential.
Take three large taels of Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice Root), crush it raw, and sieve the powder separately. Mix with nine taels of Hordeum vulgare (Barley) flour in a large basin until uniform. Add a small amount of high-quality butter (Su) and knead it into the medicine until even. Knead with boiling water into a cake-like consistency, slightly larger in diameter than the sore. Apply hot compresses to the swelling, using oil paper and old paper as barriers to allow ventilation. Replace when cool. If pus has formed, it will drain naturally; if not yet suppurated, the swelling will resolve internally. While applying the medicine, it is advisable to consume yellow millet porridge, which is very beneficial.
Another method: Take one large tael of Radix Glycyrrhizae (Licorice Root), lightly roast, and crush. Soak in one sheng of water. Place a small knife horizontally across the vessel and leave it exposed overnight at dawn. Stir the mixture to produce foam, blow off the foam, and drink the liquid. This is effective for all sores, swellings, and Fabei.
The *Meishi Fang* (Prescriptions by Master Mei) treats various carbuncles, ulcers, and Fabei, or those occurring on the breast. If initially slightly red and not treated urgently, death will follow quickly.
Resolution Prescription: Crush fresh Boehmeria nivea (Ramie) root and apply to the site, changing frequently.
The *Shenghui Fang* (Holy Benefit Formulas) treats Osteomyelitis (Fugu Ju) and Fish-eye Sore.
Burn dog skull bones and fumigate the affected area with the smoke.
Zhang Wenzhong’s prescription treats Stone Carbuncle (Shiyong), which is hard as stone and does not suppurate.
Crush fresh Phytolacca acinoides (Chinese Pokeweed) root and rub it on the lesion. Change when dry, stopping when the tissue softens.
The *Zimu Milu* (Secret Records of Mother and Child) treats carbuncles, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and infantile erysipelas (Dan Du).
Boil roots of Rhamnus spinosa (Spiny Buckthorn) and wash the affected area with the juice.
Another prescription: Crush larvae of Scarabaeidae (Qicao) and apply topically.
The *Duanju* prescription treats early-stage gangrene/ulcer.
Mix powdered Adzuki beans (Xiaodou) with vinegar and apply topically; it also resolves the swelling.
The *Boji Fang* (Universal Relief Formulas) treats all carbuncles and swellings that have not ruptured, causing pain, aiming for internal resolution.
Pound fresh Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Dihuang) into a paste. Spread according to the size of the swelling on cloth. Sprinkle Powder of Aucklandiae (Muxiang) in the middle, then cover with another layer of Rehmannia paste. Apply to the swelling. Repeat no more than three to five times.
*Ri Hua Zi* states this reduces swelling and toxicity.
Mix Powder of Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi) with water and apply.
*Dietary Therapy* treats carbuncles and swellings.
Roast Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen) in vinegar until dry, then crush and sieve. Mix with vinegar, spread on paper, and apply as a patch. It is suitable for individuals consuming mineral drugs.
Yang Wenwei’s prescription treats unruptured carbuncles.
Mix equal parts of Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen) and Adzuki beans into powder. Apply with vinegar.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats severe swellings that, if neglected, become suppurated.
Burn spines of Rhamnus plants to ash, mix with water, and ingest. After one night, the head of the abscess will emerge.
Another prescription: Treats carbuncles that feel cold internally and fail to close.
Burn one rat skin to ash, grind finely, and apply to seal the wound opening.
Sun Simiao states this treats multiple sites of carbuncle eruption.
Burn cow dung to ash, mix with egg white, and apply. Replace when dry.
Sun Simiao’s Dietary Taboos treat all heat-toxin swellings.
Apply Phytolacca acinoides (Chinese Pokeweed) root mixed with a little salt. Change twice daily.
The *Jiyan Fang* treats swelling.
Take twenty willow branches, each as thick as a toe and three chi long. Boil in water until very hot. Wrap the swollen area with an old cloth and wash/rinse with the hot water. Recovery is immediate.
Another prescription: Treats carbuncles and all non-suppurated swellings, drawing out toxins.
Grind white Oyster Shell (Muli) into fine powder. Mix with water and apply. Reapply when dry.
Another prescription: Treats toxic heat causing foot swelling and pain threatening detachment.
Soak in Sophora flavescens (Kushen) boiled in wine.
The *Waitai Miyao* treats carbuncles and swellings.
Mix Longan Earth (Fulonggan) with garlic into a paste, spread on cloth, and apply. Replace when dry.
Another prescription: For swellings whether ruptured or not.
Soak a piece of White Gelatin (Baijiao) in water until soft and sticky. Size it to the swelling. Apply directly over the center, leaving a hole at the top. If a ruptured wound closes up, the gelatin will suck out the pus. Once all pus is drained, non-suppurated swellings will resolve spontaneously.
Another prescription: Burn carp to ash, mix with vinegar, and apply to all swellings until healed.
Another prescription for heat-toxin disease attacking hands and feet, causing swelling and pain threatening detachment:
Soak in juice of Xanthium sibiricum (Cang'er).
Another prescription: Soak in juice of horse manure boiled in water.
An additional prescription from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats toxin attacking hands and feet, causing swelling and pain threatening severance.
Boil one pig trotter with scallions, strain, add a little salt, and soak the affected area.
The *Jingyan Houfang* (Experienced Later Prescriptions) treats all headless carbuncles and swellings.
Swallow one seed of Abelmoschus manihot (Kuicai) with fresh water. It will rupture shortly. To rupture two sites, take two seeds, adding one for each desired rupture site. This is verified effective.
Another prescription: Treats carbuncles that do not resolve and have formed pus, fearing needle lancing cannot break them, aiming for rapid drainage.
Take the first feather from under the wing of a white chicken (one from each side), burn to ash, grind, mix with water, and ingest.
Also from *Meishi Fang*: Apply pigeon droppings to the head of the swelling to facilitate rupture. Male pigeon droppings are preferred; hardness indicates male origin.
It is noted that Realgar (Xionghuang) has been used for treating sores and ulcers since ancient times.
The *Rites of Zhou* (Zhou Li) records that surgeons treated ulcers using "Five Poisons" to attack them. Zheng Xuan commented: "Current medical formulas use Five Poison medicines. They are made by combining Huang [likely Huangdan], Shidan (Lithium Carbonate), Cinnabar (Dansha), Realgar (Xionghuang), Yu Shi (Arsenolite), and Magnetite (Cishi), burning them for three days and nights. The smoke rises and deposits on surfaces; collect this deposit with a chicken feather and apply to the wound. Evil flesh and necrotic bone are expelled." Academician Yang Yi once recorded this. When young, Official Yang suffered from a facial ulcer extending to the jaw, swelling like an inverted bowl, with continuous discharge of pus and blood, causing unbearable pain despite a year of treatment. Following Zheng Xuan’s method, he prepared the burnt medicine and applied it to the wound. Soon, necrotic bone and teeth were expelled, and he recovered. This confirms the speed of ancient remedies. The term "Huang..." refers to glazed tiles sold in markets. Modern alchemical preparations still use yellow glazed pots, also called "Huang...", originating from antiquity. (Pronounced Wu.)
The *Meishi Fang* treats postpartum milk stasis leading to mastitis. Crush Taraxacum officinale (Pugongying/Dandelion) and apply to the swelling, changing three to four times daily. Commonly known as Dandelion, colloquially mispronounced as "Pugongying". Boiling and drinking the juice is also effective.
Another prescription: Treats妒乳 (Du Ru - Engorged/Blocked Breast) and Mastitis.
Grind Clove (Dingxiang) into powder. Mix with water and ingest one cunshi dose.
Another prescription: Treats cracked nipples.
Apply crushed Clove (Dingxiang) powder topically.

Ingest Powder of Betula platyphylla (Birch Bark) with unfiltered wine. Lie down immediately; upon waking, the condition is resolved.
The *Shenghui Fang* treats persistent female mastitis.
Stir-fry half a jin of wheat flour until yellow. Cook into a paste with vinegar and apply to the breast. It resolves immediately.
The *Chanbao* treats breast issues and carbuncles.
Ingest Chicken Dropping (Jishi) powder, one cunshi dose, taken three times rapidly. Cure follows. The *Meishi Fang* also treats cracked nipples using the same formula.
The *Jianyao Jizhong* treats female mastitis where milk fails to flow, forming an internal abscess, known as Du Ru.
Burn Honeycomb (Lufengfang) to ash and grind. Take two qian per dose. Decoct with one zhan of water until reduced to six-tenths. Strain and take warm.
