During pregnancy, if panting and inability to lie flat occur due to a sudden contraction of wind-cold pathogenic factors, it is appropriate to treat with dispersing methods for self-healing; Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction) is the primary formula. If spleen deficiency causes weakness in the four limbs, lung deficiency fails to resist wind-cold, kidney deficiency results in soreness and weakness of the lower back, shortness of breath, and difficulty walking, leading to sudden continuous panting, this indicates that the spleen and lungs have been chronically deficient. The mother's deficiency leads to the child's (fetus/organ) deficiency, and kidney qi fails to return to its origin, rising upward to invade the lungs. Sheng Mai San (Generate the Pulse Powder) or Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction, excluding Sheng Ma and Chai Hu) are the primary formulas.
Danxi stated: Panting caused by internal heat movement is most common during the antenatal period. I believe that Su Jie Tang (Perilla and Platycodon Decoction) from the cough section can be used with modifications to achieve efficacy. As for pathological panting caused by toxic drugs damaging the fetus, such cases often occur in secular practice and must not be overlooked. In the past, there was a woman whose fetus died in the womb, suffering from panting and inability to lie flat. Her pulse diagnosis showed the Qikou (Radial Artery at the Cunkou position) pulse being twice as strong as the Renying (Carotid Artery) pulse; the Left Guan (Cun) pulse was wiry, moving, and rapid; both Chi (Chi) pulses were short and deviated from the normal course (Li Jing). This was because toxic drugs disturbed the blood, causing the dead fetus to remain retained, with qi and blood rushing upward. This was not panting caused by wind-cold. Therefore, a large dose of Xiong Gui Tang (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction) combined with parturition-inducing herbs was administered. At midnight, the dead fetus was indeed expelled, and the panting ceased. This woman was the mother-in-law of another person; jealous of her by the principal wife, she had used drugs to terminate the pregnancy, a fact unknown to others. Consulting the *Ji Yin Gang Mu* (Comprehensive Outline of Women's Diseases), there is a formula called Ping An San (Peaceful Safety Powder) for treating pregnant women with urgent panting. It is recorded below for reference.
Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Zi Su (Perilla Leaf), Gan Ge (Kudzu Root), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Zhi Ban Xia (Prepared Pinellia Tuber), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium) (equal parts); Zhi Ke (Bupleuri Fructus, bran-fried), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (half the amount of the equal parts). Decoct with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus).
Ping An San (Peaceful Safety Powder) Treats pregnant women with upper body urgent panting, constipation, vomiting, inability to eat, and abdominal and hypochondriac fullness.
Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Shu Di (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium), Pao Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (prepared), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian).
Use two zhong of water, add a pinch of burnt salt, decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time.
