If the pulse beats once and then pauses, death will occur in two days (another version states one day). If it beats twice and then pauses, death will occur in three days. If it beats three times and then pauses, death will occur in four or five days. If it beats four times and then pauses, death will occur in six days. If it beats five times and then pauses, death will occur in five or seven days. If it beats six times and then pauses, death will occur in eight days. If it beats seven times and then pauses, death will occur in nine days. If it beats eight times and then pauses, death will occur in ten days. If it beats nine times and then pauses, death will occur in nine days, or another account says eleven days (one version says thirteen days, specifically if dying on Lichun/Start of Spring). If it beats ten times and then pauses, death will occur on Lixia/Start of Summer (one version says Lichun). If it beats eleven times and then pauses, death will occur on Xiazhi/Summer Solstice (one version says Lixia; another says Liqiu/Start of Autumn).
If it beats twelve or thirteen times and then pauses, death will occur on Liqiu (one version says Lidong/Start of Winter). If it beats fourteen or fifteen times and then pauses, death will occur on Lidong (one version says Lixia). If it beats twenty times and then pauses, death will occur in one year, specifically if dying on Liqiu. If it beats twenty-one times and then pauses, death will occur in two years. If it beats twenty-five times and then pauses, death will occur on Lidong (one version says one or two years). If it beats thirty times and then pauses, death will occur in two or three years. If it beats thirty-five times and then pauses, death will occur in three years. If it beats forty times and then pauses, death will occur in four years. If it beats fifty times and then pauses, death will occur in five years. If it beats less than fifty times and then pauses, death will occur in five years.
If the pulse beats fifty times without pausing, all five Zang organs have received Qi, indicating no disease (The *Qianjin Fang* states: The Qi of the Five Elements is complete, Yin and Yang numbers are identical, Ying and Wei Qi circulate freely, meridians flow unimpeded, covering the hundred ke of day and night, with the mutual generation of the Five Virtues).
If the pulse beats forty times and then pauses, one Zang organ has lost its Qi; death will occur after four years, when spring grass grows.
If the pulse beats thirty times and then pauses, two Zang organs have lost their Qi; death will occur after three years, when wheat ripens.
If the pulse beats twenty times and then pauses, three Zang organs have lost their Qi; death will occur after two years, when mulberries turn red.
If the pulse beats ten times and then pauses, four Zang organs have lost their Qi; death will occur within the year. If the pulse does not change with the solar terms, death will occur on Qingming/Clear and Bright; at the latest, by Guyu/Grain Rain.
If the pulse beats five times and then pauses, all five Zang organs have lost their Qi; death will occur after five days.
If the pulse beats once and stays long (pauses), the disease is treated in the Heart Master.
If the pulse beats twice and stays long, the disease is treated in the Liver Branch.
If the pulse beats three times and stays long, the disease is treated in the Spleen Lower Middle.
If the pulse beats four times and stays long, the disease is treated in the Kidney Interior.
If the pulse beats five times and stays long, the disease is treated in the Lung Branch.
For patients with these five types of pathological pulses, if they are emaciated and weak, death will ensue. This is because medicine cannot cure them, and acupuncture cannot reach the pathology. However, robust individuals may be treated because their Qi remains intact.
