Treats cough, as well as hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and spitting of blood.
Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (chopped and lightly stir-fried), Juǎnbǎi (Cupressus Twigs) (dust removed), Gānshānyào (Dried Dioscorea Rhizome), Shēnggāndìhuáng (Raw Rehmannia Root) (cooked Rehmannia is not used), Jīsū (Elsholtzia), Dàjì (Great Thistle).
(Those with a single root are best; dried in the shade.) Wǔwèizǐ (Schisandra Berry) (all the above, each one tael, cleaned). Bǎizirén (Biota Seed) (separately ground), Fúlíng (Poria), Rénshēn (Ginseng), Bǎibù (Stemona Root), Yuǎnzhì (Polygala Root) (heart removed), Màidōng (Ophiopogon Tuber).
The above fourteen ingredients: select high-quality medicinal materials. Process according to the prescription, pound and sieve into powder. Refine honey to make pills the size of a bullet. Take at any time, decoct wheat thickly, and [swallow with it].
A relative of mine suffered from Huoluàn (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea) and was critically ill. Suddenly, he developed Ni (hiccups/rebellious Qi). Within half a day, his condition became critical. A guest said there was a moxibustion method for treating Ni.
Generally, for patients with Shanghan (Cold Damage) or chronic diseases who develop Ni, it is a malignant sign. When herbal medicines are ineffective, moxibustion will surely cure it. I then ordered moxibustion to be performed. When the heat reached the muscles, the Ni subsided. During the Yuanfeng era, I served as the Jinglüe Shi (Military Commissioner) of Yanzhou. A staff officer named Zhang Pingxu contracted Shanghan and was critically ill. One day, during an official banquet, Chen Pingyu, the Tongpan (Vice Prefect) of Yanzhou, suddenly said, "Zhang Pingxu has passed away (breath ceased); let me go see him." I asked why it had come to this so quickly. He replied, "His Ni was severe, and his breath was failing." I suddenly remembered the moxibustion method and tried it on him. Before the meal was finished, Chen Pingyu returned, smiling and saying, "One application of moxibustion cured him." The acupoint is located about one finger-breadth below the nipple, directly aligned with the nipple, in the depression between the ribs. For women, measure by bending the nipple. The point is where the nipple aligns. Use a moxa cone the size of a small bean, apply three Zhuang (cones). Moxibustion is applied to the left side for men and the right side for women. Only this one point needs treatment. When the heat reaches the muscle, the disease resolves. If it does not resolve after this, the patient is likely incurable.
(From *Lingyuan*) To stop Ni. Qiánghuó (Notopterygium Root), Fùzǐ (Prepared Aconite Root) (processed), Huíxiāng (Fennel Fruit) (lightly stir-fried, each half tael), Mùxiāng (Costus Root), Gānjiāng (Dried Ginger) (processed, each the size of a date pit).
For each dose, take two qian. Add one cup of water and a pinch of salt. Boil for ten to twenty boils. Take while hot. One dose stops the symptoms.
Putuiye (Leaves of *Broussonetia papyrifera*), resembling Begonia leaves but softer and thicker, with a white underside like tanned sheepskin. It does not shed leaves in winter. The flowers resemble Clove buds, with extremely fine filaments.
When hanging upside down, they sway in the wind. Flowers appear in late winter and open in spring. The fruit resembles Cornelian Cherry (*Cornus officinalis*), sour in taste and edible. It ripens simultaneously with wheat. The tree is quite large. In Wu region, it is called Banshe; in Jiangnan, Tang; in the capital, Zhiqi Tangqiu; in Xiang-Han, Huangponai.
Grind the above single ingredient into powder. Take two qian per dose, decocted in water or mixed with warm water. Take when symptoms occur. Someone suffering from Chuan (asthma/wheezing) for thirty years was cured by this remedy.
In severe cases, if small itchy rashes appear on the chest after taking the medicine, the disease will resolve. Another method uses equal parts of Rénshēn (Ginseng) taken together.
