Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted), Gan Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen, skin and tip removed), Sang Gen Bai Pi (Mori Cortex Radicis) (each 1 liang), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, roots removed), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 liang).
Crush the above herbs into coarse powder. For each dose, take 10 qian bi (a small spoonful measure), with 1 da zhan of water and 1/2 zhan of Tong Bian (child's urine). Add 2 Wumei (Mume Fructus) and 5 slices of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct together until 1 zhong zhan remains. Filter out the dregs and take after meals and before going to bed. Dr. Zhang from Liangzhe suffered from Chuan Zheng (wheezing and asthma) for twenty years. His condition worsened every autumn and winter, making it impossible to sit or lie down, and various treatments failed. Later, taking this medicine required long-term use to be effective.
Treats Hong Jiao Liu Zhu (a condition characterized by swelling and pain in the lower limbs, often associated with gout or rheumatism), heavy sensation in the head and eyes, joint pain, cold hands and feet, heaviness with heat and spasms, edema and numbness, and seeing black spots in the eyes (from *Ben Cao*). He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, soaked in water for one day, sliced thickly about half cun, mixed evenly with Black Bean Water, let moisten, layer the wet He Shou Wu with beans, steam until beans are rotten, remove beans and dry in shade), Xian Ling Pi Ye (Epimedii Folium), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (the above three, each soaked in wine overnight), Wu Tou (Aconiti Radix, soaked in water for seven days, stir-fried with 2.5 liang of salt until yellow, each 0.5 jin).
Take 2 qian per dose, administered with wine or mixed with porridge drink. Take three times a day, on an empty stomach before meals. Patients with chronic conditions may see effects within half a month. The daughter of Wang Chuo, a colleague of my late father who served as Libu (Minister of Personnel), suffered from foot disease with spasms and pain for two years; she recovered in half a month using this prescription. My elderly aunt also suffered from unbearable pain in the bone marrow of her hands and feet, which had not improved despite long-term treatment; she also recovered using this prescription.
Yang Yingchen from Meishan was seven chi tall, had a robust appetite, and was a free-spirited man. Suddenly, he contracted Xiao Ke Ji (Wasting-Thirst Disease), drinking several dou of water daily, eating double his usual amount, yet urinating frequently. He took Xiao Ke medicines for over a year, but his condition worsened daily. Believing death was inevitable, he prepared his coffin and bedding and entrusted his son to others. A good doctor from Shu, the son of Zhang Yuanyin (name forgotten), diagnosed him by pulse. Laughing, he said, "You almost died by mistake!" He took She Xiang Dang Men Zi (Moschus, the glandular sac), moistened it with wine, and made about ten pills. He decocted Zhi Ju Zi (Hoveniae Semen) to make a drink, which cured him. When asked for the reason, Zhang Sheng explained that Xiao Ke and Xiao Zhong are caused by Spleen deficiency and Kidney exhaustion. Earth fails to control Water, and Kidney fluids fail to ascend, leading to this disease. Now, diagnosing Yang Yingchen, his Spleen pulse is extremely hot, while the Kidney qi is not exhausted. This is likely due to excessive consumption of fruits and alcohol, causing deficient heat in the Spleen, hence eating more and drinking more water. With more water intake, there is naturally more urination; this is not true Xiao Ke. She Xiang can resolve alcohol toxicity; fruits and melons cannot grow near She Xiang, and Zhi Ju Zi can also resolve alcohol toxicity. If this tree grows outside a house, brewing wine inside will not ferment properly; if the house is built with this wood, brewing wine underneath will also fail. Therefore, these two substances are used as medicine to remove the toxicity of alcohol and fruits. Song Yu wrote "Zhi Ju binds the nest." Zhi is pronounced ju, li qie; Ju is pronounced ju. Because its fruit resembles bird milk, it can bind nests. Now commonly misnamed Ji Ju Zi, also called Lai Han Zhi Tou (Leprous Man's Finger), likely named for its shape similarity. It tastes like milk when chewed, and children like to eat it.
