Usage: Take the patient's own urine. Collect only the middle portion of the stream, discarding the beginning and end. Take one bowl and drink it while hot. This formula transforms blood and clears fire, allowing the spirit to recover spontaneously. It is an excellent medicine for treating blood disorders. It differs from Qiu Shi (Mineral Natron); do not take Qiu Shi.
[Yu Nu Jian]
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 5 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 qian), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, 3 qian).
Chen Xiuyuan strongly criticized the fallacies of this formula. However, Chen's deficiency in treating blood disorders lies precisely here. This demonstrates that the master control of blood resides in the Bao Shi (uterus/refining chamber), and the Bao Gong (uterus) and Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) connect upwards to the Yang Ming Stomach Meridian. In healthy individuals, the Middle Jiao transforms fluids into blood, which flows down via the Chong Mai to the Bao Shi. In patients with hematemesis, fire stirs in the Bao Gong causing qi rebellion, merging upward with the Yang Ming meridian, causing blood to overflow. Persistent coughing is often due to the Qi of the Chong Mai merging with Yang Ming, forming this hyperactive and rebellious syndrome. The formula uses Shi Gao and Zhi Mu to clear heat in the Yang Ming; Niu Xi to subdue rebellious qi; and Shu Di Huang to nourish Yin in the Bao Gong. This calms the dryness of Yang Ming and settles the Qi of the Chong Mai, curing the hyperactive syndrome. Zhang Jingyue created this formula without considering this aspect. Chen Xiuyuan further disparaged it, while Wang Shixiong believed it could treat toothache caused by Yin deficiency and stomach fire. None of them understood how closely this formula relates to the Chong Mai. Mai Men Dong Tang treats Chong Mai rebellion by descending phlegm; this formula treats Chong Mai rebellion by descending fire.

Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Huang Qi and Ren Shen.
[Ren Su Yin]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 5 qian), Su Mu (Daemonorops Spine, 4 qian).
Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, postpartum hemorrhage, and traumatic injuries where blood stasis invades the Lung. Symptoms include black smoke-like vapor rising from the nose and a purple-black complexion like an eggplant. This occurs because when Lung Metal Qi is sufficient, it controls and directs Qi downward, preventing blood from invading either the Lung organ or its Qi level. Now, since it invades the Qi level, blood stasis moves upward, directly invading the Lung organ. Blood is governed by Liver Wood; when Lung Metal Qi is nearly exhausted, Liver Wood dares to insult it. When Lung Qi is depleted, blood takes advantage. The formula selects Su Mu, which inherits the Qi of Liver Wood, has a red color and salty taste, and breaks blood stasis. This treats the Liver to remove the "thief" harming the Lung, while urgently using Ren Shen to generate fluids and regulate Lung Qi to tonify Qi. Once Lung Qi is robust, its controlling function restores itself, and blood dare not invade.
[Shen Fu Tang]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 8 qian).
Human Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is born in the Kidney and emerges from the Lung. If Lung Yin cannot control and regulate, and Kidney Yang cannot return to its root, a syndrome of panting and collapse occurs. Fu Zi enters the Kidney to tonify the root of Yang Qi; Ren Shen enters the Lung to assist the master of outgoing Qi. The two medicines complement each other to greatly tonify Yuan Qi. Qi is the Yang of Water; Water is the Yin of Qi. Ren Shen tonifies the Yin of Qi; Fu Zi tonifies the Yang of Water (Kidney). Understanding this reveals all methods of tonifying Qi.
[Tong Pi Xie Wei Tang]
Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 3 qian), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 3 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 3 qian), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried, 3 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Chong Wei (Eryngii Caulis, 3 qian).
This formula originally treats external turbidity of the eyes and is also suitable for treating eye bleeding (Mu Xu). The ingredients clear heat and drain fire, preventing fire from steaming upward, thus eliminating eye diseases. Fang Feng specifically treats fire by dispelling wind, as fire movement generates wind; removing wind extinguishes fire. Chong Wei clears heat by promoting diuresis, as dampness steaming obstructs heat; promoting diuresis dissipates heat.

Chi Shao (Red Peony Root, 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 qian), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 3 qian), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos, 1 qian), Lao Cong (Old Green Onion, 3 qian), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces), She Xiang (Moschus, a little), Huang Jiu (Yellow Wine, 1 cup).
Da Zao, Sheng Jiang, and Cong Bai have dispersing and ascending properties, allowing blood-invigorating herbs to reach the vertex and penetrate the skin. She Xiang reaches everywhere. It is effective for blood stasis in the vertex, chest, back, and skin pores. Wang Qingren's *Yi Lin Gai Cuo* has many coarse errors, but his lifelong strength lies in treating blood stasis. This formula is derived from Xiao Diao Jing Tang, so it is worth adopting.
[Fang Feng Tong Sheng San]
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 3 qian), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica, 2 qian), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 1 qian), Chao Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, fried, 3 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 3 qian), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 1 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 3 qian), Hua Shi (Talcum, 3 qian), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 1 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian).
Wu Hegao stated: Fang Feng and Ma Huang are exterior-releasing herbs; wind-heat in the skin is excreted via sweat. Jing Jie and Bo He are upper-clearing herbs; wind-heat at the vertex is excreted via the nose. Da Huang and Mang Xiao are purgative herbs; wind-heat in the intestines and stomach is excreted via stool. Hua Shi and Zhi Zi are water-passage herbs; wind-heat in the San Jiao is excreted via urine. Wind settling in the diaphragm affects the Lung and Stomach; Shi Gao and Jie Geng clear Lung and Stomach heat, while Lian Qiao and Huang Qin disperse wandering fire in various meridians. Wind disorders are governed by Liver Wood; Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, and Bai Shao harmonize Liver Blood. Gan Cao and Bai Zhu harmonize Stomach Qi and strengthen the Spleen. Removing Mang Xiao and Da Huang creates Shuang Jie San, meaning resolving both exterior and interior, harmonizing Ying and Wei. Ben Fang is named Tong Sheng San, emphasizing its miraculous efficacy. My commentary: This formula treats excess-heat in both interior and exterior, characterized by absence of sweating and hard stool. It treats all such conditions regardless of diagnosis, not just stroke.

[Gua Di San]
Tian Gua Di (Momordicae Fructus, 3 qian), Chi Xiao Dou (Vigna Semen Rubrum, 3 qian).
Grind into powder, taken with Xiang Chi Tang (Fermented Soybean Decoction). Both formulas use breaking, draining, and inducing vomiting methods; they should not be used in deficient persons.
[Bai San Fang]
Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 3 qian), Ba Dou (Crotonis Semen, stir-fried black, 1 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 3 qian).
Grind into powder, take one "zi" dose. If the pathogen is above the diaphragm, it induces vomiting; if below, it causes diarrhea. If no diarrhea occurs, drink hot porridge; if diarrhea persists, drink cold porridge.
[Ren Shen Qing Fei Tang]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, 2 qian), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex, 3 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, 3 pieces), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1 qian), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, 3 qian), Su Ke (Papaveris Pericarpium, 1 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 3 qian).
Treats lung deficiency causing cough, wheezing, hemoptysis, and lower bleeding. Ren Shen, Gan Cao, and Da Zao tonify Earth (Spleen) to generate Metal (Lung), stabilizing the Lung. E Jiao and Zhi Mu aid moistening. Di Gu Pi and Sang Bai Pi drain heat and fire. The Lung governs Qi; when Lung is clear and moist, Qi descends naturally, restoring its astringent nature, preventing phlegm and blood from invading. Xing Ren promotes flow; Wu Mei and Su Ke astringe. Overall, this ensures the Lung maintains control, preventing these diseases. This formula corresponds to Tai Ping Wan, Bao He Tang, Zi Wan San, Ren Shen Xie Fei Tang, and Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang. Users can deduce applications from these principles.
[Ning Fei Jie Geng Tang]
Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Gua Lou Shuang (Trichosanthis Fructus Pulvis, 3 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 4 qian), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 2 qian), Bai He (Lilii Bulbus, 3 qian), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex, 3 qian), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 3 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex, 3 qian), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 3 qian), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen, 2 qian), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 qian).
Treats Lung Abscess (Fei Yong), whether ulcerated or not, and Lung Distension. Tonification and purgation are combined to drain phlegm, fire, blood, Qi, and pus downward, calming the Lung.
[Dan Pi Tang]
Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 3 qian), Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus, 3 qian), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 3 qian), Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus, 2 qian), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian).
Internal abscesses form from heat-toxin congealing blood. Removing the toxin removes blood heat. Gua Lou resolves Qi stagnation; Tao Ren and Dan Pi break Blood stagnation; Po Xiao and Da Huang purge Qi and Blood stagnation. Once stagnation is removed, the abscess disappears.
[Chi Dou Yi Yi Tang]
Chi Dou Ya (Vigna Semen Germinatum, 3 qian), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen, 3 qian), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian).
Pus is blood transformed into water. Thus, draining pus involves breaking blood and promoting diuresis. Chi Dou Ya enters the Blood level to unblock and assist decomposition. Yi Yi Ren and Fang Ji drain pus from the Fluid level. Gan Cao harmonizes the herbs. This is the major principle for treating abscess pus, though not fully recorded in texts; it can be extrapolated.
[Ren Shen Gu Ben Tang]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 3 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 3 qian), Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix, 3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 0.5 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 qian), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Licorice Root, 1 qian).
This formula nourishes the Lung and Stomach and transmits Kidney Water. Named "Gu Ben" (Solidify the Root), it implies the Stomach and Lung are roots, the Lung is the root of the Kidney, and the Kidney is the root of generating Qi. The three Zang organs irrigate each other, solidifying the root, so deficiency heat, steaming, cough, wheezing, and regurgitation do not arise.
[Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang]
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 5 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 3 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 qian), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 2 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 5 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian).
Chen Xiuyuan said: For night sweats due to Yin deficiency and fire disturbance, Dang Gui and Di Huang nourish Yin, while Huang Lian and Huang Qin drain fire, treating the root. The brilliance of this formula lies in bitter-cold herbs. Cold overcomes heat; bitter strengthens Yin. To prevent excessive bitter-cold from damaging Middle Qi (the guardian of Yin), which would worsen fire and sweating, Huang Qi is doubled among the bitter-cold herbs to lead their properties to the exterior, securing the pores and preventing retention in the Middle. Commentary: Chen's theory is correct except for the claim that Huang Qi leads bitter-cold to the exterior without retaining in the Middle. Medicines work by counteracting pathological extremes. Treating internal heat requires cold herbs, but cold herbs do not all travel to the skin without affecting the Middle. Huang Qi lifts from the Middle outward, unlike Ma Huang which penetrates skin directly. For internal heat causing sweating, this formula is appropriate. For external heat where the interior cannot tolerate cold herbs, Gui Pi Tang or Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang modified is better.

This formula uses blood-invigorating herbs, adding Fang Feng and Bai Zhi to reach the surface, and Chuan Shan Jia and Zao Jia Ci to penetrate meridians. Since blood does not move without Qi, Chen Pi and Bei Mu diffuse and promote Qi flow. Since blood congeals due to fire, Jin Yin Hua and Tian Hua Fen clear and resolve fire. It is the premier formula for reducing swelling in sores. It correctly identifies that sores result from blood congealment. It is a balanced formula; adjusting for yin/yang and adding cold/hot herbs yields immediate results.
[Tuo Li Xiao Du San]
Zao Jia Ci (Gleditsiae Spina, 2 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 2 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 3 qian), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, 3 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 3 qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Yun Ling (Poria, 3 qian).
Swelling in sores is blood congealment; pus formation is blood transforming into water. Blood and toxin congeal, blocking Qi and causing pain. To remove congealment, Qi must control it, making Qi battle Blood. Yang steams Yin, transforming Yin blood into water (Qi). This explains pus formation. This formula uses Si Jun Zi Tang plus Huang Qi to greatly tonify Middle Qi, assisted by detoxifying and blood-harmonizing herbs. It is a major formula assisting Qi to battle Blood. Modifying based on this principle is key.
[Mai Dong Yang Rong Tang]
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 3 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 qian), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 3 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 3 qian), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian).
Excessive fire consumes Qi, causing Qi heat and blood malnourishment. Mai Dong and Zhi Mu clear fire. With fire cleared and Qi calm, Yang does not oppress Yin, and blood is peaceful. Hence called Yang Rong (Nourish Ying). Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang uses Yuan Zhi and Gui Xin to assist Heart Fire to transform blood; this formula uses Zhi Mu and Mai Dong to clear Stomach Fire to calm blood.
[Da Feng Dan]
Da Feng Zi Rou (Semens Crotonis Tiglii, 3 qian), Tu Liu Huang (Native Sulfur, 2 qian), Ku Fan (Alumen Ustum, 1 qian), Ming Xiong (Realgar, 2 qian).

"Treat wind by first treating blood; when blood moves, wind extinguishes." Whether wind-heat or wind-cold, wind is Yang. Heaven and Earth's Qi is often austere and killing; invading the Blood level causes pain, swelling, and stiffness. When blood moves, wind in the blood level moves with it. Thus, treat wind by treating blood. Si Wu Tang nourishes blood as the foundation for expelling pathogens, added with wind-dispelling herbs to drive pathogens out. Simple method, effective result. Treats wind in head, eyes, vertex, and spine.
[Fang Feng Xiong Gui Tang]

Removing blood stasis is the method of dissolving necrosis. Drying fluid is the method of drawing out pus. Invigorating blood is the method of generating flesh. The formula focuses on dissolving necrosis and removing stasis. To draw out pus, add Ku Fan and Gu Long; to generate flesh, add Zhen Zhu and Ren Shen. Understanding the intent allows flexible modification.

For traumatic injuries and internal/external blood stasis, use this formula to move it. It combines principles of Tong Qiao Huo Xue Tang, Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang, Xiao Chai Hu Tang, and Xiao Diao Jing Tang. Self-explanatory.

Lung Qi originates from the Stomach; Gan Cao and Ren Shen tonify Stomach to generate fluids and benefit Lung. Robust Lung Qi ascends, circulates externally and internally, descends without stagnation. Thus, Lung formulas often feature Ren Shen. However, Ren Shen tonifies fluids/Qi but does not resolve Qi stagnation. External wind-cold traps Qi internally; Zi Su, Qian Hu, Ge Gen, and Sheng Jiang disperse it. Internal phlegm-fluid causes Qi rebellion; Ban Xia, Ling, Jie, Zhi, and Chen Pi drain and descend it. This formula disperses wind-cold and drains phlegm-fluid. It is borrowed for hemoptysis, epistaxis, asthma, and trauma-related Qi-blood stagnation to relieve obstruction so blood flows freely.

Treats traumatic blood stasis with thirst, body pain, and constipation. Si Wu Tang nourishes and regulates blood; Po Xiao and Da Huang purge stasis and obstruction. The brilliance lies in Sheng Jiang, which diffuses Qi, making...
