[Soybean Paste / Fermented Soybeans]
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. It can ascend and descend, belonging to Yin within Yin.
[Materia Medica Indications] Primarily treats headache and alternating chills and fever caused by Cold Damage (Shanghan), pestilential qi and toxic pathogens, irritability and chest fullness/stuffiness, and painful coldness in both legs. (Mingyi Bielu) Malaria, bone-steaming consumption, dog bites, night sweats.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung meridian and the Stomach meridian. It is a substance for releasing the exterior and relieving irritability. (Has actions of resolving muscle layer tension, inducing sweating, directing Qi downward, and harmonizing the middle.)
[Preliminary Discussion] *Bowuzhi* states: Fermented soybeans induce sweating when combined with scallion; they induce vomiting when combined with salt; they treat wind when combined with wine; they treat dysentery when combined with Allium macrostemon (Xie); they stop bleeding when combined with garlic; when stir-fried until cooked, they stop sweating. This also aligns with the principle of Ephedrae Radix et Rhizoma (Mahuang Genjie). Shi Cai (He Mengyao) stated: Fermented soybeans enter the Lung meridian, which corresponds to the principle that "the Lung dislikes rebellious Qi, and bitter substances should be eaten urgently to drain it." In Cold Damage and pestilential qi, the Lung is affected first, leading to panting, difficulty breathing, irritability, and chest stuffiness, which is merely an excess of Lung Qi. Why not treat it?
[Contraindications] *Bencao Jingshu* states: When Cold Damage has transmitted into the Yin meridians, or in cases of direct invasion of the Three Yin meridians, it should not be used. If heat is knotted in the chest causing irritability and restlessness, this indicates...

(Meng Shen) Relieves tinnitus, unblocks urination and defecation, treats epidemic febrile diseases with mania, and abdominal pain due to Yin toxicity.
[Meridian Tropism] Enters the Lung, Liver, and Stomach meridians. It is a substance for dispersing pathogens. (Also has light/yang properties, reaching the exterior and interior, unblocking Yang, and treating blood conditions.)
[Preliminary Discussion] Li Shizhen said: Used raw, it is pungent and dispersing; used cooked, it is sweet and warm. Solid on the outside and hollow inside, it is a herb for the Lung. It is suitable for consumption in Lung diseases. The Lung governs Qi and corresponds externally to... various diseases.
[Contraindications] Zhang Zhongjing said: Eating scallions with honey can be fatal; eating them with dates causes illness. Li Shizhen said: Those who frequently consume Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Dihuang) and Bupleuri Radix (Changshan) should avoid eating scallions. *Bencao Jingshu* states:...
