To know the pulse of fetal movement in the Spleen is at the Guan position. The pulse is tight like a string; look carefully. The infant within the womb should move, yet it causes the pregnant mother to be unable to find peace.
To understand the condition of the pregnant woman, one must examine meticulously. The pulse may appear Hong (Surging), broad, and Xian (Wiry), sometimes present and sometimes absent. If the pulse on the Right hand is Xian (Wiry), it indicates a female fetus; if the pulse on the Left hand is Hong (Surging) and large, it indicates a male fetus.
Although the pulses in all three positions resemble "Fish Swimming" (a faint, intermittent pulse indicating severe deficiency), the fetus in the womb is not yet eager to be born. One must further determine the Yin and Yang attributes; know that at this time, both mother and child are unwell.
Why is the pulse irregular in an unmarried maiden? It is naturally caused by excessive thought and worry. Her body has become emaciated with a sallow complexion. The pulse is floating and surging, while the Chi (Cun) position is thin and slightly moving.
Qi stagnation causing stabbing pain originates from blood accumulation entangling. She cries out throughout the night without sleeping. The pulses at the Three Passes are tight without being surging or large; Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi have always been tonified but not disseminated.
If one understands that Liver and Spleen are inspected at the Guan position, Wei (Defensive) Qi attacks the head due to Wind. Women suffer from illness due to thought; women often accumulate Wind pathogen.
In women, Blood and Qi are not harmonious, and Yin within Yin is even more prevalent. Day by day, the Zang organs become deficient, and the person becomes emaciated. The pulse comes as Yang Fire cold, grinding unevenly.
During leukorrhea, the pulse appears tonified and slight; observe its deep and fine nature. It is said that the Sea of Blood is mostly deficient and cold, leading to delayed conception in the Dantian.
Men at the age of eight times eight (64 years) show reversed Yin pulses: Floating and large at Chi (Cun), sunken at Cun. Women at the age of seven times seven (49 years) have flourishing Yin palaces; this method of deduction does not change the gold standard.
The pulse of young people appearing rigid and strong, surging and large for years without death, is concerning. Only fear frequent standing due to weakness; surely the soul will enter the realm of ghosts.
Generally, for young people, the six positions should show surging, large, and rigid pulses, which is a favorable pulse indicating strength. Illness is easy to treat. Surging and large pulses in this context are contrary pulses, making illness difficult to treat.
When limbs are cold and the pulse is surging, death is imminent without doubt. Suddenly seeing the whole body hot as fire, if the pulse is sunken, strong, and cold, survival is rare. In Cold Damage (Shanghan), when limbs are cold, a sunken and fine pulse is favorable. For Yin diseases, a surging and large pulse indicates Yin-Yang opposition, presenting this symptom, which is difficult to treat. When the body feels like fire, with headache, dryness, and thirst, a surging and large pulse is favorable. For the elderly, a hidden and sunken pulse is favorable; for the young, showing Yin within Yang is difficult to treat. This is a contrary pulse.
