Wu Cheng's wife, while pregnant, was startled and subsequently suffered from palpitations (Ji, 悸). Physicians believed the pathology was internal with the spirit (Shen, 神) wandering outward, rendering it incurable. Shen Zongchang attributed it to injury of the Gallbladder (Dan, 胆) and prescribed Bao Dan Wan (Gallbladder-Protecting Pill), resulting in a cure.
Da Sheng San (Great Sage Powder): Treats palpitations and fright during pregnancy, frequent startling during sleep, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, and restlessness in sitting or lying.

Bao Dan Wan: Used for manic-depressive disorders (Dian, 癫) in miscellaneous diseases. [Note: Formula composition not listed in this excerpt.]
[Da Quan] A pregnant woman who does not speak is not necessarily ill. In rare cases where this occurs, medication is unnecessary. One need only administer Bao Sheng Wan (Life-Preserving Pill) or Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) in the month preceding delivery; speech will naturally return after childbirth. This is a natural physiological process, not a result of medicinal efficacy. Physicians fail to inform patients of this. They administer ordinary medicines near term, and when speech returns postpartum, they claim credit for their medical skill. How can this be considered their merit?
The Yellow Emperor asked: "Why do some women lose their voice in the ninth month of pregnancy?"
Qibo replied: "This is due to the obstruction of the collateral vessels of the uterus (Bao, 胞)."
The Emperor asked: "How so?"
Qibo answered: "The collateral vessels of the uterus connect to the Shaoyin Kidney meridian, which passes through the kidney and connects to the root of the tongue. Hence, speech is impaired."
The Emperor asked: "How should it be treated?"
Qibo replied: "No treatment is required. It will resolve spontaneously by the tenth month."
Case study of Hao Weng: Refer to the section on Fetal Observation (Hou Tai, 候胎) above.
(Attachment regarding Dry Mouth)
[Da Quan] Pregnancy complicated by vexation and stuffiness arises because, at four months gestation, the body receives the Qi of Shaoyin Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire of the Hand-Shaoyin) to nourish essence, and at six months, it receives the Qi of Shaoyang Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire of the Foot-Shaoyang) to nourish Qi. If the mother experiences fear and coldness of the heart and gallbladder, she often suffers from vexation, termed "Zi Fan" (Fetal Vexation).
*Chan Bao* states: "Fetal vexation occurs when Lung deficiency allows heat to invade the Heart, causing mental distress. Accumulated phlegm-fluids between the heart and chest, or rising to disturb the heart, also cause vexation. If caused by heat alone, there is merely fever. If caused by phlegm-fluids, symptoms include vomiting saliva and froth, aversion to food odors, and restless anxiety. Generally, pregnant women with accumulated phlegm-fluids experience clashing of cold and heat, leading to Qi stagnation. Symptoms range from vexation and vomiting of saliva to severe cases involving fetal unrest. All are classified as Zi Fan."
[Xue Ji] For the aforementioned conditions:
If due to internal heat, use Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
If due to Qi stagnation, use Zi Su Yin (Perilla Infusion).
If due to phlegm obstruction, use Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) modified with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus).
If due to Qi depression, use Fen Qi Yin (Qi-Separating Infusion) modified with Chuan Xiong.
If due to Spleen-Stomach deficiency, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) modified with Zi Su (Perillae Folium) and Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus).
Case: A pregnant woman suffered from vexatious heat, expectoration of phlegm, anorexia, nausea, and dizziness. This was caused by Spleen deficiency with wind-phlegm. She was treated with Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang (Pinellia, Atractylodes, and Gastrodia Decoction) to tonify Yuan Qi and dispel wind pathogenic factors, gradually recovering, though dizziness persisted. Subsequently, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) modified with Man Jing Zi (Vittate Fructus) was used to raise and tonify Yang Qi, resulting in a cure.
Zhu Ye Tang: Treats fetal vexation characterized by a frightened heart and timid gallbladder, with constant mental stuffiness.

Ingredients: Cong Bai (Scallion White; one handful), Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean; two he).
Preparation and Administration: Add two large zhan of water. Decoct until one and a half zhan remain. Strain. Take warm, divided into three doses.
Yi Mu Wan: Treats fetal unrest caused by medication during pregnancy, presenting with symptoms similar to empty vexation and inability to lie down, termed "Zi Fan" by Chao Shi. [Category: Obstetrics and Lactation].
Ingredients: Zhi Mu (2 liang, washed and dried).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Bind with jujube paste to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, delivered with Ginseng decoction.
Physicians who fail to recognize this condition treat it as empty vexation, inevitably damaging fetal Qi.
[Regarding Vexation and Dry Mouth]
The Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian opens into the mouth; the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian opens into the tongue. In pregnancy, if Zang-Fu Qi is deficient, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are disordered, and Yin and Yang are severed, heat invades the Heart and Spleen, depleting body fluids. This causes mental vexation and dry mouth.
[Xue Ji] For the aforementioned conditions:
If Stomach meridian excess fire, use Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction).
If Stomach meridian deficiency heat, use Ren Shen Huang Qi San (Ginseng and Astragalus Powder).
If Stomach meridian Qi deficiency, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.
If Lung meridian deficiency heat, use Zi Su Yin.
If Liver meridian fire stirring, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder).
If Spleen Qi depression, use Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction).
If Kidney meridian fire stirring, use Jia Wei Di Huang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill).
Case: A pregnant woman suffered from vexatious heat accompanied by throat pain. She was treated with Zhi Mu San modified with Shan Zhi to clear the Lung meridian, resulting in a cure. Later, she developed internal heat with coughing and urinary incontinence. She was treated with Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang modified with Mai Men Dong and Shan Zhi to tonify Lung Qi and nourish Kidney Water, resulting in recovery.
