Zishiying Wan (Purple Quartz Pill) [from *Benshi Fang*]: Treats women's diseases often characterized by fluctuating menstrual volume, early or late onset, and frequent pain. Physicians generally call this a menstrual disease without distinguishing whether Yin overcomes Yang or Yang overcomes Yin, hence few effective treatments. Generally, when Yin Qi overcomes Yang, the uterus becomes cold, and blood circulation is obstructed, as stated in the classics: "When heaven is cold and earth frozen, water congeals into ice," causing scant flow occurring after the expected date. If Yang Qi overcomes Yin, blood flows and spills excessively, as stated: "When heaven is hot and earth warm, menstrual water boils over," causing abundant flow occurring before the expected date. One should harmonize Yin and Yang, regulate Qi and Blood, prevent mutual overcoming, and aim for balance. This pill is suitable.

[Xin] For long-standing amenorrhea suddenly turning into severe metrorrhagia, then stopping again and becoming irregular with heavy flow: Fenglong (ST-40, needle 6 fen, stops bleeding.) Shimen (CV-5, needle 5 fen, stops menstruation.)
For women aged fifty whose menstruation stops and then resumes, varying in amount, mixed with clots or bright red blood, with abdominal distension resembling pregnancy: Tianshu (ST-25), Zhongwan (CV-12), Qihai (CV-6) (each needle 5 fen, immediate cure.)
[Jia] For women with metrorrhagia, suffering from blood obstruction and non-flow, rebellious Qi causing distension: Xuehai (SP-10) governs. For pain in the uterus of women, menstruation not stopping at its proper time: Tianshu (ST-25) governs. (*Qianjin Fang* describes it as abdominal distension, borborygmus, Qi rushing to the chest.) For lower abdominal distension and pain radiating to the yin, lumbar and spinal pain when menstruation arrives, uterine masses, cold in the zi men radiating to the patella and thigh: Shuidao (ST-28) governs. (*Qianjin Fang* describes radiating to patella and thigh as difficulty in urination and defecation.)
[Body Pain]
[Chanbao] Menstrual blood is the mechanism that circulates Qi and Blood, connects Yin and Yang to nourish the body. When Qi and Blood are abundant and Yin and Yang are harmonious, the physique is smooth. If external Wei-Qi nourishment is lacking, or internal Ying-Blood irrigation is deficient, resulting in insufficiency of Qi and Blood, body pain occurs before the onset of menstruation.
Yuetong San (Exceeding Pain Powder): Treats body pain due to Qi and Blood deficiency-cold.
Hugu (Pantheris Os, 5 zhu), Fuling (Poria Cocos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, each 3 zhu).

[Abdominal Pain]
[Liang] Abdominal pain during menstruation in women is caused by wind-cold invading the Bao Luo, Chong and Ren vessels, or damaging the Hand-Taiyang and Hand-Shaoyin meridians. Use Wen Jing Tang (Warming the Menses Decoction) or Guizhi Taoren Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Persicae Decoction). If worry and thought cause Qi stagnation and blood stasis, use Guizhi Taoren Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Persicae Decoction) or Dihuang Tongjing Wan (Rehmannia Unblocking Menstruation Pill). (Formula see Amenorrhea.) If blood knots into masses, use Wanbing Wan (Ten Thousand Diseases Pill).
[Xue] For the above syndromes, if wind-cold damages the Spleen, use Liu Junzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) plus Paojiang (Processed Ginger). (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Consumptive Weakness.) If worry damages Blood, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Renshen (Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodes). (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Consumptive Weakness.) If worry damages Qi, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) plus Chaihu (Bupleurum) and Zhizi (Gardenia). (Formula see Miscellaneous Diseases Forgetfulness.) If depression and anger damage Blood, combine Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) and Xiaoyao San (Free Wanderer Powder). Refer to previous discussions for other treatments.
[Dai] Abdominal pain during menstruation, or abdominal pain when menstruation does not occur, are both due to irregular Blood. To regulate Blood, first regulate Qi. Add 0.5 qian of Wuzhuyu (Evodia) and 1 qian of Xiangfu (Cyperus) to Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Heqi Yin (Harmonizing Qi Decoction) with 0.5 qian of Wuzhuyu (Evodia) is also usable. For severe pain, use Xianshusuo Tang (Corydalis Decoction). However, one must also consider pain caused by external pathogens or dietary injury, where pain is not due to Blood, requiring careful examination. Heqi Yin (Harmonizing Qi Decoction) can treat multiple causes; if due to cold leading to cessation, and cessation leading to pain, Da Wen Jing Tang (Great Warming the Menses Decoction) is suitable; for severe cold, remove Maimendong (Ophiopogon).
[Dan] Yi Qi Wan (Suppressing Qi Pill): Treats abdominal pain at the onset of menstruation.
Use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Xianshusuo (Corydalis), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Gancao (Licorice). For severe pain, use Doulin Jiu (Bean-Soaked Wine); for mild pain, cook Xiangfu (Cyperus) with child's urine, add Tiaohuang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and form pills. For pain before menstruation arrives, use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Taoren (Persicae Seed), Xiangfu (Cyperus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
[Hai] Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substances Decoction): Treats colicky pain in the umbilical and abdominal region before menstruation; pain at the onset of menstruation is due to sluggish Blood.

[Ben] For women with menstrual congestion, unbearable heart, abdomen, and umbilical pain, and for postpartum slow lochia expulsion, blood rushing to the heart causing confusion, unconsciousness, and near-death states, use Hupo San (Amber Powder).
Jing Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma), Peng'ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), Chishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Liu Jinu (Ayapani Herba), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Guangui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Zhen Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, each 1 liang). *Jisheng Fang* lacks Juhua (Chrysanthemum) and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), but includes Xianshusuo (Corydalis) and Wuyao (Linderae Radix).
Take the first five herbs, boil with one sheng of Wudou (Sojae Semen Preparatum), half a jin of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, sliced), and four sheng of Rice Vinegar until beans are soft, dry them, add the remaining five herbs, grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mix with warm wine, take on an empty stomach before meals. Another formula omits Juhua (Chrysanthemum) and Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), using Wuyao (Linderae Radix) and Xianshusuo (Corydalis), which is also good. It is my family's secret recipe. For ordinary Qi and Blood pain, one dose suffices; for postpartum blood rushing to the heart, two doses suffice for expulsion; regular use is especially good. I have saved many people urgently with this; it should be prepared in large quantities to help others.
